The Self-Aware Millennial

"5 years ago, I publicly departed from the WWII museum as a member of the Victory Belles.

If you knew me at the time- then you knew how much work I did to make sure the Black lives of New Orleans and the African American diaspora were acknowledged and protected. With that sparked a movement that gave other stakeholders a voice to address their many concerns with the state of the museum at the time- and the rest is history.

Since then, I’ve made it my life’s work to put the same effort I was giving to that institution and, essentially, align myself with local institutions that DO acknowledge and defend black lives privately AND publicly in our absence.

This is a touchy topic for me. So touchy that I still do not fully have the right words to describe how I'm processing that chapter 5 years later. I do my best to be eloquent, but there's some thoughts that I'm still finding the vocabulary for- so I ask you to do your best to receive the info in this reflection with love and empathy. She's doing her best.

The WE WILL DREAM festival delegation joins the 2025 International Black Theatre Summit (IBTS) in Accra, Ghana, deepening connections between Black artists and creatives from across the diaspora. In this episode, the WWDF delegation joins the podcast to discuss their upcoming voyage to Africa. They confess their fears, lay out their intentions, and leave room for discovery of revelations that could only be actualized amongst their ancestral atmosphere. Sometimes, personal goals get lost because we say yes to other people's goals without assessing whether or not they align with ours. Though there is something valuable to take from every experience, we have to constantly evaluate whether or not what we are currently doing is nourishing us or depleting us.

J.Mix is joined by her talented friends, Pat Smith & Lefty Lucy, to talk shop about how they are prioritizing gigs and artistic experiences that nourish their purpose and goals. J.Mix is a multi-hyphenate performing artist born & raised in New Orleans, LA. She is a Loyola University Music School graduate with over fifty theatrical credits since 2006. For the vast majority of her career, she's sung the tunes of other composers and songwriters in theatrical and classical spaces. Over the last three years, she has begun releasing original music and has found fulfillment & freedom in sharing herself in this way.

On Friday, October 25th, her new(ish) single, "Circles 2.0” will be released on streaming services. It's "new(ish)" because this song is a re-imagining of the previous single “Circles” released with the Songwriter Collab in 2022. In her opinion, this latest iteration feels more like an accurate representation of who she is as an artist and of the sound/musical ideas she hopes to evolve into as her solo artist career grows.
