A U.S. judge has handed down a 10-year prison sentence to Canadian rapper Tory Lanez on Tuesday for shooting and injuring hip-hop sensation Megan Thee Stallion. The verdict was delivered by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford to 31-year-old Lanez, hailing from Brampton, Ontario. Lanez had been found guilty in December of three serious felonies:
- Assault with a semi-automatic firearm.
- Possessing a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle.
- Discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
This sentence marks the conclusion of a gripping trial that ignited a cultural storm within the hip-hop community. It brought forth critical issues, including the hesitance of Black victims to engage with law enforcement, gender dynamics in hip-hop, the toxicity of online spaces, safeguarding Black women, and the impact of misogynoir, a specific form of misogyny experienced by Black women.Judge Herriford expressed the difficulty in reconciling the image of Lanez as a kind, charitable individual and a good father, as portrayed by many during the sentencing hearing, with the same person who fired the weapon at Megan. The judge stated, "Sometimes good people make poor choices. Actions bear consequences, and there are no victors in this case."
