From FRANCE- The student led protests in France expanded with yellow vests, unions, and the black bloc. Chaos reigned as many fought with the increasingly violent police. Some defaced revered cultural sites. Then looting began and people who had nothing to do with the demonstrations broke into stores and grabbed whatever was available. The government arrested thousands and put curfews in place. France became more politically divided and the far right took it as a victory, calling for law and order. Some accused the far left party called Unbowed of being behind the violence. We will hear press reviews from France and then international sources. There were more riots in Portugal over the economy, in Italy things turned violent and looting spread especially in Milan. Protesters fought with police and military in Albania. The new UK PM announced a controversial new drilling license in the North Sea despite the worsening climate situation.

From JAPAN- For the first time China surpassed Japan in global automobile sales, mostly due to innovative electrical models. Thailand is seeing a shift in taxis turning to electric models. Marco Rubio was in India and said the Quad members, that is India, Australia, Japan, and the US will have a meeting next month in the Philippines. 8 US states are suing ChatGPT developer Open AI because of the risk it has for suicide and self-harm among youth. The UN World Food Program has had to cut food assistance in Gaza due to funding shortages. Last weekend Ukraine launched a major drone attack on St Petersburg and Leningrad, creating fires at oil facilities, residential buildings, and a data center. A group of European diplomats were attacked by settlers in the illegally occupied West Bank , following the nearly fatal attack on a 64 year old Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine.

From CUBA- In Brazil there are protests against Meta accusing the social media giant of electoral interference ahead of this coming weekends presidential election. Trump declared his complete support for Netanyahu in the Israeli PM election in a week. ALJ found Israeli spyware in its journalists phones and computers. The Pentagon will delay until after the US midterm elections releasing its investigation into the attack on an Iranian school that murdered 120 children the first day of the war on Iran.

From FRANCE- There are large scale protests going on in many countries. There has been a lot of focus on the French student protests which are continuing- maybe because it reminds us of the French protests in 1968 when civil unrest emerged around the planet. We will begin with some massive protests in India, where the Modi government removed millions of people from the voting rolls, allegedly targeting Muslims. The police and military detained and injured thousands of civilians, including many politicians, and blocked social media. Thousands took to the streets in Portugal to rally against soaring rents and house prices, with dozens injured by a violent police crackdown as I put this show together on Thursday. In Colombia thousands of riot police and military attacked crowds protesting a new anti-terror bill and the new right-wing President Espriella. In Brazil students are protesting against Flavio Bolsonaro who received the most votes in the first round of presidential elections last week. France 24 correspondent Jan Onoszko reports from Rio- including protester comments and speculation on why many youth are choosing to follow the right-wing politician

From JAPAN- NHK spent quite a bit of time talking about and with South African born Navi Pillay who won the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law. Pillay defended Nelson Mandela, was the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, a judge at the ICC and the ICJ. Germany has authorized a social media ban for children under the age of 13. Houthi rebels in Yemen has been engaging in missile strikes with Saudi Arabia.

From CUBA- Israeli PM Netanyahu wants investigations into the Israeli creators of and participants in the award winning documentary film NAZA. The Pentagon killed another 4 people on a speedboat in the Caribbean allegedly carrying drugs. Der Spiegel published testimonies from 10 Israeli soldiers describing how troops murdered Palestinians and recorded them as being terrorists.

From JAPAN- A robot arm will begin surveying the 880 tons of nuclear fuel debris in the reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power plant which melted down in 2011- they are hoping to begin cleaning the waste in 2037. The Trump administration is looking to expand nuclear power in the US, including restarting the plant at 3-mile island, site of the worst nuclear accident in US history. Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez has called for a snap election on November 29th as a response to unrest over skyrocketing housing prices. There will be a runoff vote in Brazil on October 25th between Lula da Silva and Flavio Bolsonaro.

From FRANCE- More on the Brazilian election where Lula and others are complaining about US interference in the electoral process. Then a series of press reviews on the massive student protests in France this week. An estimated 266,000 high school students marched in the streets and were met with increasing clashes with police. The main objective was to update dilapidated school buildings especially in poorer areas, more staff, and to limit class sizes to 36. By Thursday parents and union members had joined the demonstrations to protect the students- In Spain and Belgium students have also begun protests. An editorial on where the students rage comes from. The question of whether Netanyahu and the Israeli state were told of the Hamas plans to attack 10 days in advance and did nothing to prepare for the horrible massacre on October 7th.

From CUBA- The US Coast Guard intercepted an oil tanker in the Caribbean trying to bring fuel to Cuba. The lack of fuel continues to plague all aspects of life in Cuba, including its ability to broadcast their news. The Mexican ruling Morena party stated it will maintain support for the Cuban people in the face of the energy blockade imposed by the US- Mexican President Sheinbaum spoke out at the UN General Assembly expressing solidarity with Cuba. President Sheinbaum also warned about the presence of right-wing groups within the US administration which intend to change the government of Mexico. Police in the UK arrested 6 people in the area of a Royal Air Force Base that had been used by the US military to bomb Iran, implying that they were terrorists, then let them out on bail.

From GERMANY- As the US/Canada trade war escalates, a trade ban on numerous products from Canada has come into effect. Trump says that Canada will come and apologize and remove their retaliatory tariffs. An interview with Lawrence Herman, an international trade lawyer from Canada. He says Canada will not come back and say they are sorry. Canada sends about 70% of its exports to the US but many of the materials and components in those products are from US sources- thus an economic slowdown in the states. Canada has been cementing new trade relations with the European Union. Lawrence says Canada will not become a member of the EU as was recently speculated. He says trade with the US will not end, but there will be many difficulties until Trump leaves office.

From JAPAN- Tokyo experienced a record breaking 31 consecutive days of rain. Japan continues to run nuclear power plants but has no place to permanently store the waste. Trump says that South Korea is investing in 8 new nuclear power plants in the US as well as an LPG pipeline in Alaska- South Korea denies agreeing to the pipeline. At the UN General Assembly North Korea insisted on its right to remain a nuclear armed state. UN Secretary General Guterres is concerned over the lack of progress in nuclear disarmament. Also at the UN the Nepalese PM blamed the devastating floods on global warming which his country is not responsible for.

From CUBA- Last weekend at the UN, the Cuban FM denounced multi-dimension hostilities from the US. On Tuesday the US issued new regulations and sanctions to further strangle the nation and people of Cuba. China reaffirmed its strong support for Cuba. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband addressed critics of the Labour policy on the plight of Palestinians and announced sanctions on Israeli settlements- Ed however failed to support those charged with terrorism for carrying signs expressing support for Palestine Action.

From JAPAN- Japan has continued to receive record amounts of rainfall. Trump made an address at the UN General Assembly which many nations found opposed to the spirit of the UN- last year he called climate change a scam. UN investigators say that there are reasonable grounds to believe the US committed war crimes in Iran. The Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also delivered a speech at the UN in response to Trump’s speech the day before. France, Germany, and other European countries are increasing young recruits into their military systems.

From GERMANY- There are upheavals in German elections, with another far-right victory in the eastern part of the country and a far-left victory in Berlin. On the last day of elections in Moscow Ukraine hit the city with the largest ever drone attack, including setting fire to the largest oil refinery- this year Ukraine has successfully attacked a Russian oil refinery every third day on average. Israeli PM Netanyahu has gone after the award winning Israeli directors of a documentary called Naza about systematic killings in Gaza- Netanyahu says he will revoke their citizenship. The OSCE, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which monitors elections around the world, has not been invited to the US midterm elections this November.

From FRANCE- At his UN speech, Trump claimed that Cuba will fall, prompting the Cuban delegation to walk out. The Cuban Foreign Minister responded.

From CUBA- The power outages in Cuba as a result of US sanctions kept RHC down most of the past week. Israeli drone attacks in Gaza continued this week, killing more civilians. Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile and champion of womens rights, has withdrawn her candidacy to become the next secretary-general of the UN. The ICE deportation of Haitians has continued with a fourth flight.

From GERMANY- The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, proposed a new associate partnership between Canada and the European Union. There would be cooperation on tech, defense, and energy. Roland Paris, a professor of International Affairs at the University of Ottawa, explains what the change in status would do for both Canada and the EU. Canada has many resources the EU needs, especially since the US under Trump has has added huge tariffs and a general attitude of coercion to its relationship with Europe. Canadian PM Carney appears open to a new alliance with Europe.

From FRANCE- Press reviews from the US, Canada, and Europe on the proposed new partnership between Canada and Europe. On 9/11 many papers gave opinions as to the success of the the US war on terror after the Twin Towers attack. Then a press review of the US proposed $2.8 billion arms sale to Israel.

From JAPAN- Iceland may quit whaling next year, leaving only Japan and Norway defying the global moratorium by the International Whaling Commission enacted in 1986. A brief update on the human toll in the floods in Nepal from 3 weeks ago. The Chinese Defense Minister urged countries to exercise vigilance against militarism, seemingly aimed at Japan over comments on the conflicts between Taiwan and China. Iran has restated that it will not negotiate with the US until its conditions are met- meanwhile Houthis have effectively blocked Saudi oil exports. China urged Iran and the US to hold talks leading to a diplomatic resolution on the memorandum of understanding. After meeting with Marco Rubio, the recently elected president of Peru, Keiko Fujimori, says her country will participate with US led forces targeting drug crime.

From CUBA- The Pentagon released another video of an alleged drug boat being blown up by US forces in the Caribbean. An Israeli human rights group, B’tselem, accuses Israel of systematically dismantling the conditions that allow Palestinians in the occupied West Bank to function as a community. Israeli forces have continued severe attacks on Lebanon, despite a US brokered ceasefire earlier this year. The head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization was blocked from attending the annual gathering of the UN Nuclear Agency in Vienna- a BRICS declaration urged restraint in the war on Iran.

From GERMANY- Britain announced a ban on goods produced by settlers in the occupied West Bank. The Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband delivered the changes while pointing out that he is proudly of Jewish descent and supports the Israeli right to exist- while accusing terrorist settlers of ethnic cleansing. DW correspondents Tania Kramer and Birgit Maass discuss the ramifications of the sanctions imposed and note that 11 other countries, including France and Canada, have joined in the action. Israel announced counter measures. Jewish organizations in the UK said Miliband is appeasing the left wing and islamists. During the controversy Israel announced plans for another 1000 settler homes in West Bank settlements.

From FRANCE- Press reviews on the revelations that Netanyahu was informed in advance of the October 7th massacre by Hamas. The far right wing German political party, called the AfD or Alternative for Germany, won a significant election in an eastern state- demonstrations took place across Germany in opposition. Marco Rubio is visiting the South American countries which recently elected right-wing leaders- in Peru there were large demonstrations in opposition to his presence.

From CUBA- Trump posted a map of the western hemisphere as well as Greenland and Iceland with the label the United States of America- Iceland summoned the US ambassador and Mexican president Sheinbaum stated that Mexico is a free, independent and sovereign nation. Israel is accused of destroying every condition for survival in Gaza, including water treatment and 90% of all the buildings. Israel has continued deadly strikes in Lebanon and says their troops will remain there until Hezbollah no longer exists.

From JAPAN- Japan has experienced a week of torrential rain including the most rainfall every recorded in one hour. An update on the death toll in Nepal following climate induced flash flooding 2 weeks ago. Russia and North Korea have completed the first road bridge between the countries. The UN Secretary General called on world leaders to work for peace at an annual Peace Bell ceremony.

From GERMANY- Last Friday the Trump administration announced plans to take about 20% of Venezuelan oil reserves or 65 billion barrels. John Feeley is a former US Ambassador to Panama and currently Executive Director of Media Integrity Of The Americas. He said that the takeover was a big announcement that is basically an exaggeration to please the MAGA supporters and distract from the tension about fuel prices. Alejandro Betancourt is an oil oligarch and looks to be the private business partner to conduct the deal. Feeley says that the Venezuelan people will be the losers in whatever comes to pass from these announcements.

From FRANCE- Press reviews have returned to France 24 and here is one about Alejandro Betancourt the notoriously corrupt oil baron swinging the oil deal for the US in Venezuela. Then a report on the signing of a separate oil deal between Chevron and other US firms with the Venezuelan government installed after the US kidnapped President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. Then an opinion piece from the Nepali Himalayan Times lambasting Western hypocrisy around the climate crisis which created the devastating floods in Nepal.

From JAPAN- An update on the situation in Nepal. Ukrainian President Zelensky has warned the world that Russian airspace will be effectively closing because of increasing drone attacks. Japanese Defense forces are showing off their new aerial combat drones. Leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization held a summit and issued a declaration supporting Iranian sovereignty and territorial integrity. Iranian officials accuse the US military of attacking dozens of people at a wedding, killing 4 and injuring 67.

From CUBA- Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio denounced the the US government is funding press articles to justify a military aggression against Cuba. A second deportation flight was sent to Haiti. Cuba criticized the continued Israeli attacks on Lebanon, where more than 4300 have been killed since March. Israeli air attacks continue killing civilians including children in Gaza.

From FRANCE- A devastating mudslide and floods moved through the Nepal and Tibet regions destroying many villages and killing hundreds- many countries have sent aid and rescue teams. Leela Jacinto talks about the geology of the region and the melting glaciers that triggered the events- glaciers are melting at record levels around the planet, largely a result of climate warming. Parts of Central America are experiencing extreme drought, exacerbated by the changing weather patterns brought on by an unusual El Nino. Noga Tarnopolsky talks about how the upcoming Israeli elections are influencing extremist settler attacks in the occupied West Bank- also Israeli Minister of National Security Ben-Gvir called for the wanton killing of 30-40 Palestinians each night in Gaza to raise the level of terror and keep Netanyahu in power.

From JAPAN- The Japanese government says it supports International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane after the US announced sanctions against her- a group of Parliamentarians condemned the move by Donald Trump. The UN and the IIRC are urging countries to regulate lethal autonomous AI weapon systems. Parts of Japan have been experiencing extreme heat. China and other countries expressed displeasure after the US said it would ratchet up its sanctions on anyone doing business with Iran.

From CUBA- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez condemned the new one year extension of the US blockade on the island- more than 7000 cargo containers with international aid remain stranded in Caribbean ports in fear of the US sanctions. The Pentagon announced that it has renewed its strikes on boats in the eastern Pacific and Caribbean allegedly transporting drugs to the US- at least 223 people have been killed in the bombings- the US DEA says the killings have had no effect on supplies of cocaine in the US. The UN, Canada, and Australia said it was shameful that Israel will not investigate the killing of a convoy from the World Food Kitchen in Gaza- 186 aid workers were killed last year in Gaza. While the US is actively deporting permitted Haitians to the island, scores of civilians are being killed by gangs.

From JAPAN- The South Korean military drill with the US was shortened at the request of Trump. Campaigns for the Brazilian presidential elections kicked off last Sunday, with the vote coming in October. The UK Sunday Times quoted the Ukraine military saying British made drones are used for attacking oil refineries deep inside Russia. Israeli strikes on Gaza on Wednesday killed 10 Palestinians. The Trump administration is escalating its attack on the International Criminal Court, imposing sanctions on the President Tomoko Akane and others in the Courts leadership.

From FRANCE- More in-depth reporting on the US attack on the International Criminal Court- there is a broader attack on the organization stemming from fear that the Americans might be charged with war crimes. Volodmyr Zelensky is being challenged in a call for a new presidential election, the first since 2019, by Mykhailo Federov recently fired Defense Minister.

From CUBA- Trump claimed the strait of Hormuz as US territory- Iran insists it will keep the waterway closed until the US acts within the Memorandum of understanding and releases Iranian assets. Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene claims that the Trump administration is discussing using tactical nuclear weapons in the war on Iran- NBC reported a similar story from a Pentagon official. Netanyahu called Britain an Islamic republic because of its media coverage of the war in Palestine and new policies banning products from illegal Israeli settlements.

From GERMANY- The rate of environmental damage from current global warming in Europe is alarming- it is at a stage formerly predicting to not be reached until 2050.
