From JAPAN- Torrential rains have continued in South and Southeast Asia, destroying land and 1400 people. Major Japanese companies have filed lawsuits over Trumps new tariffs. The Chinese and French Presidents met in China saying that they should support each others core interests. Ukraine attacked 2 Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea, causing a large fire and much pollution off the Turkish coast. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute released a report on the 100 largest arms producers, whose revenues increased to a new record of $679 billion in 2024- half of those sales to US weapon manufacturers.

From FRANCE- A series of Press Reviews, starting with an article in the Guardian about Denmark instituting a night watch to insure that Trump does not seize Greenland. Israeli papers respond to Netanyahu requesting a pardon. Trump calling Somalis garbage and ramping up deportations. Several press reviews and editorials on Putin visiting Modi in India- a quick look at the history of defense relations between to two countries.

From GERMANY- An interview with Christopher Sabatini, Latin American Senior Fellow at Chatham House in London. about whether the US will carry out a ground intervention in Venezuela.

From CUBA- Colombian President Petro has firmly rejected Trumps order to close Venezuelan airspace. Venezuelan President Maduro spoke about the psychological warfare and aggression the US is leveling at his people. Trump pardoned the former Honduran President Hernandez who was found guilty of being a cocaine kingpin, and has been trying to influence the current election there which has not been decided by airtime today.

From GERMANY- First a review of the COP 30 climate talks in Brazil. An interview with Luisa Neubauer a prominent German activist from Fridays for Future. She describes the various approaches to the climate crisis expressed at the conference, and the undermining of reductions in fossil fuels by corporate lobbyists- Germany promised $1 billion was promised for rainforest protection while annually giving $60 billion in fossil fuel subsidies. She talks about the importance of continuing the system of climate summits even though they are broken. Then a report on increasing settler violence in the occupied West Bank, where activists are being targeted. An interview with Aviv Tatarsky an Israeli researcher with the NGO Ir Amim. He discusses the increased attacks in the occupied West Bank despite the so-called ceasefire, and argues that the activities are defined by the term ethnic cleansing. He also discusses annexation, whether by decree or actions.

From JAPAN- An update on the conflict enabled by the new Japanese PM, who remarked on the response a Chinese attack on Taiwan would create in Japan. Chinese President Xi spoke by phone with Trump on the Taiwan issue. Record breaking rains in Vietnam are still causing flooding, and further rains in Thailand just broke 300 year records, leaving many parts under water.

From CUBA- The Venezuelan government says Mario Rubio is lying about President Maduro being part of a terrorist organization. The G20 Summit in S Africa saw leaders adopt a joint declaration addressing the climate crisis without US input- next years summit will be in the US.

From FRANCE- Talk of a secret peace plan for Ukraine negotiated by the US and Russia angered many European leaders. The day before French President Macron and Zelensky announced an agreement for Ukraine to buy 100 French top end fighter jets. A review of British papers commenting on what is being called the most sweeping asylum policy overhaul of modern times, making it much tougher on refugees in the UK.

From GERMANY- UN climate talks at COP30 in Brazil have drawn thousands of activists from around the world. Their demand is for real action, not just words on climate justice and change. A report by Tim Schauenberg on the scope of the protests and whether they are having an effect on the direction of the conference.

From JAPAN- The new PM of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, created serious tension with China by suggesting that a Chinese attack on Taiwan would threaten Japan. China had agreed to import Japanese seafood recently but stopped after the PMs remarks on Taiwan. Toyota will invest nearly a $ billion in 5 factories making hybrid and electric cars in the US. The Israeli military killed 13 people at a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon. Israel carried out aerial attacks across Gaza on Wednesday killing 25.

From CUBA- Venezuelan President Maduro criticized the President of Trinidad and Tobago for allowing the installation of US military on their territory 15 km from Venezuela. The UN Security Council approved a US plan for a so-called stabilization force in Gaza, directed by a Board of Peace chaired by Trump- Russia denounced the plan which has no Palestinian input.

From GERMANY- Donald Trump has threatened to sue the BBC for $1 billion because of an edit they made to his speech on January 6, 2020- the day that hundreds of his supporters forced their way into the US Capitol and vandalized it. The edit was in the show Panorama that aied in October 2024 just before the election. The BBC Director General and the News CEO resigned after criticism. An interview with David Kaye a professor of law at University of California, Irvine.

From JAPAN- The head of the International Criminal Court (the ICC) has called for global cooperation to help it maintain its independence and impartiality. A second typhoon came ashore in the Philippines and Asia this week. More than 150 countries are officially attending the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 30) in Brazil. The Trump administration chose not to attend and has withdrawn from the Paris Agreement- an unofficial coalition of US state and municipal governments and private companies are attending as “America Is All In.”

The UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) has warned that the occupied West Bank is facing its largest displacement crisis in 50 years.

From FRANCE- Beginning with a Press Review on how left-leaning European leaders are inspired by the way Mamdani developed his campaign in NYC. Following government plans for more austerity programs and cuts in the pension program, wealth taxes were proposed on the assets of French citizens owning over 100 million Euros- not an income tax but a tax on possessions. 86% of the French population supported the idea, the Parliament came up with a lite version, and then failed to pass any wealth tax at all. This week was the start of the 30th annual UN Climate Change Conference, or COP 30 being held in Brazil. At a preview meeting Brazilian President Lula da Silva expressed his goals in the meeting.

From GERMANY- The hurricane disaster in Jamaica, stimulated by global warming, is an example of the importance of limiting greenhouse gas emissions. In the last 2 weeks many nations announced new climate goals. UN Secretary-General Guterres pointed out that the Paris Agreement goal is already a failure but should make countries get more serious not surrender. Then an analysis of the goals of COP 30 and the effect Trump not sending a delegation and calling climate change a hoax will have on the conference.

From JAPAN- More than 5 feet of rain fell in parts of Vietnam in 24 hours, the most ever recorded in the country. In December Australia is going to start the ban on social media for those under 16. Following another Ukrainian bombing of a Russian oil port, Russia heavily bombed eastern Ukraine.

From CUBA- Last weekend the US military bombed another boat in the Caribbean alleged to be carrying drugs to the US , bringing the death toll to at least 64- the UN has demanded the US stop these attacks. According to Ox-Fam the 10 richest Americans have increased their wealth by $700 billion since the January. Israel continues bombing in Gaza and has only allowed 24% of aid trucks agreed to to enter Gaza. Then a report on the proposals for rebuilding the Gaza Strip.

From JAPAN- Trump held a summit with the President of South Korea, Lee Jae Myung- South Korea agreed to make a huge cash investment in the US and Trump gave him the okay to build a nuclear submarine in Philadelphia and acquire nuclear fuel. Japanese and US defense secretaries met and agreed to jiontly produce missiles. A report from Oak Ridge Tennessee where the first atomic bombs were produced.

From FRANCE- Trump announced that he will restart testing nuclear weapons following Putin announcing two new nuclear weapons. A press review on the win in legislative elections in Argentina by Javier Milei, the austerity president. Press reviews on the devastating hurricane Melissa that hit Jamaica and Cuba was fueled by climate change, and a surge in new coal, gas, and fossil fuel mega-projects.

From CUBA- UN Secretary-General Guterres says the world has failed to limit global heating to 1.5 degrees celsius, the goal set by the Paris climate agreement. US officials are closely examining the murder of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh by Israeli forces in 2022. Venezuela says it has captured a group of mercenaries tied to the CIA.

He talks about the history of Gunboat Diplomacy in Venezuela in 1910, and new alliances with governments shifting to Populist anti-institutional leadership. Daniel calls it a contest of affinity, the more Trump style you are, like Argentina and El Salvador, the more privileged your treatment. From CUBA- The Colombian President Petro denies the Trump accusation that he involved in drug trafficking and says the Colombian military will not assist the US in overthrowing Maduro in Venezuela. He also accuses Trump of violating a free trade agreement between the nations, harming attempts to diversify agriculture in Colombia. Israel is continuing its raids in Gaza despite agreeing to a ceasefire, and in the West Bank Israeli settlers made 71 attacks on Palestinians in the past week, beating them and driving them off their property.

From GERMANY- Israel released hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for hostages and many of them were tortured while in Israeli prisons without being charged with crimes. An interview with Helena Sola Martin of the World Organization Against Torture. She discusses the Israeli policy of detention without charging and banning the International Red Cross from monitoring the 18,000 Palestinians they detained. The prisoners reported beatings, lack of food and medicine, humiliation and cruelty.

From JAPAN- 97% of new vehicle sales in Norway are electric, with the goal of 100% to be reached soon. In the US tax credits for those purchasing EVs have been stopped, leaving GM and other manufacturers cutting back on production.

From GERMANY- A large percentage of international news this week was focused on the ceasefire in Gaza. I thought this piece from Germany covered most of the discussion points. Distribution of food and supplies is restricted to less than half of what was expected. Gazans are returning to almost complete ruins, with water and electrical sources destroyed. Estimated costs to rebuild are $70 billion and will take a decade. An interview with Andrew Gilmour former UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights. He says the scale of the destruction to Gaza is the worst anyone has seen- it was bombed more severely than the combination of Berlin, London, Hamburg, and several other cities combined during WWII. He thinks Israel will impede removing 60 million tons of rubble and may destroy any new construction as they have done in the West Bank. He doubts that there will be any accountability for the war crimes that have taken place in Palestine.

From FRANCE- The US military assassinated alleged drug smugglers in the Caribbean for the fifth time this week while Trump said he was authorizing the CIA and considering airstrikes in Venezuela. A discussion on whether these are first steps in regime change.

From CUBA- The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Maria Machado was quite controversial, since she supports US intervention in her country. Hamas has rejected any role for Tony Blair in governing Gaza, based on his history on Iraq and Afghanistan.

From FRANCE- Tuesday was October 7th and there were commemorations in the Israeli press as well as the international papers. In France the President, currently Macron, appoints the Prime Minister- a month ago Sebastian Lecornu was given the position, after 2 others had failed in the last 12 months, and now he has resigned- this had led to calls for Macron to call snap elections or resign- this is a political crisis talked about in the second press review. Then following Trumps apparently successful first phase of a peace deal in Palestine, the press speculated on whether he would see his dream of a Nobel Peace prize come to pass. In Venezuela there have been large protests against the US military assassinations of boats allegedly transporting drugs in the Caribbean- and President Maduro claimed to have prevented a false flag operation on the US Embassy in Caracas. An interview with Phil Gunson of the International Crisis Group on the conflict between the US and Venezuela.

From GERMANY- On Friday all the boats in the Global Sumud Flotilla had been captured by Israeli troops in international waters and the crews taken to prisons in Israel. Many countries represented in the 450 crew members have objected to the Israeli action, and massive protests took place around the world. An interview with journalist and Cambridge lecturer Alina Trabattoni about the protests in Italy, calling for government action to declare Palestinian statehood and charges of genocide against Israel.

From CUBA- The UK has announced plans to crackdown even further on protests- another 500 were arrested on terrorism charges on Saturday for carrying signs saying they support Palestine Action.

From FRANCE- Recently I found myself saying that only the US has free speech and then wondering what that actually meant. So here is a conversation about the history of free speech in France, including the story of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. In 2015 there were deadly attacks on the staff for publishing caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed. And people in many countries defended the magazine by saying Je Suis Charlie. The US has given Hamas an ultimatum 21 point peace plan that must be accepted in 3 or 4 days. An interview with Fathi Nimer in Ramallah,, a Policy Fellow at the al-Shabaka think tank. He discusses how the proposed peace plan is being viewed in Palestine and what might happen if an agreement is reached or rejected.

From GERMANY- As of today, Thursday, Israeli military forces had intercepted dozens of boats that are part of a relief flotilla headed to Gaza. Around 500 people were aboard 40 vessels, and those on the captured boats were taken ashore. Italy had sent a naval warship to protect the passengers but backed off before the Israeli soldiers removed the crews with automatic weapons. Italy had mass demonstrations supporting the flotilla for a week before the seizure, and that night tens of thousands flooded the streets in protest across the country. An interview with journalist and Cambridge lecturer Alina Trabattoni .

From CUBA- Trump is negotiating a $20 billion bailout for Argentina. Widespread sanctions were reinstated against Iran at the UN security Council. The Israeli military continues to assault the Gaza Strip while 453 Palestinians have starved to death.
