The gospel of Luke is the only to discuss Elizabeth’s pregnancy. This pregnancy is paralleled to the ongoing of Sarah and Hagar’s pregnancies. 

We talk about these connections. We offer Elizabeth’s response to Mary’s pregnancy as how the kingdom of God can and should operate. Patriarchy makes sisterhood like Elizabeth and Mary’s rare, but these two women redeem what Sarah lost.

A father and a son go up a hill (i.e. mount). The son carries the implements for his execution. They are calling it a sacrifice. Sound familiar? It should. It’s both Abraham and Isaac, and God and Jesus.

Just because God says go doesn’t mean it’s an easy mission. There is a midrash that suggests because of what Abram did, he gets thrown in a furnace. There’s real implications for going against culture and cultural norms.
