  • How Anca Booked Her First Client From Instagram With Less Than 500 Followers - #071

Are you marketing on Instagram but hearing crickets?

    We've all been there.

Without a real strategy and clarity, Instagram can feel like it takes all of your time and doesn't give you anything back. It can feel like you're shouting into a crowd of other shouters, desperately hoping you'll be heard above the noise. Or it can feel like the only people paying attention to your posts are in your niche, NOT your ideal clients.

    Sound about right?

Instagram is a topic I cover in my course, Simple Sales School. I've gained 10,000 followers in one month, had multiple reels get 500k - 1.5 million views, and used Instagram to attract my ideal clients and customers.

And I don't just talk the talk, I walk the walk. I started a new Instagram profile in a totally different niche 5 months ago and grew it to 563 followers with only 15 posts and very minimal effort. (I'm a big believer that you DON'T need a lot of followers to start making an income, and you DON'T need to post daily or spend all your time on Instagram to grow an engaged following.)

In this week's new podcast episode, Anca, a web developer and student inside Simple Sales School, is sharing how she booked her first client from Instagram with less than 500 followers.

    In this episode, you'll learn...
    • ONE change Anca made to her Instagram profile that led to her booking a new client
    • How she 3x'd the views her reels get
    • Why the key to success is INSIDE us
    • Why you should stop making assumptions about how much people would pay you
    • How to stop self-sabotaging and turn more free consultations into paying clients
CHAPTERS 00:00 Anca's journey from performing arts to web developer 05:42 Google Scholarships: how they work 07:50 being a lifelong learner 09:09 getting addicted to Instagram & comparing your posts to others in your niche 11:43 becoming a beginner again 12:52 how Anca booked a client from Instagram when IG marketing had never worked for her before 14:28 The evolution of Instagram 16:18 Mindset: the key to our success is inside us 17:24 How to talk (with ease) about payment on sales calls 19:30 Don't make assumptions about what your target clients can afford 24:31 Anca's hesitations before joining Simple Sales School 28:28 When should you launch a course? • How to Avoid Slow Stages & Recession-Proof Your Business | #070

How can you avoid slow stages in business?

And how can you recession-proof your business?

    Is it even possible?!

    The honest answer is.... no.

That's wasn't what you were expecting, right?

Here's the truth: all parts of life ebb and flow, up and down, and business is no exception to that. You can't avoid the lows. What makes you a successful business owner isn't that you avoid the lows, it's how you deal with them when they happen and how you prepare for them.

Tough times don't last forever, and that means good times don't last forever either. The sooner we accept that fact of life, the less stressed we are, because we can then drop the unrealistic expectation that growth is linear and that our businesses must always be on an upward path to success, or else we are "failing."

    In this episode, you'll learn...

    • 4 ways to prepare for slow seasons and recessions so they don't hurt your business or financial stability
    • Why you need to build a brand, not just a business
    • How your purpose, values, services and pricing can create a community that is loyal to your business even during hard times
    • Why living "below your means" is the key to inner peace during slow seasons (and the key to much more.)
TIMESTAMPS 4:25 Your business needs a purpose that people can believe in 7:52 create a no-brainer service, package or product that people would love and buy even during challenging times and recessions 11:13 You can't just increase your prices because you think you're "worth it" or there's inflation 13:44 If you live below your means, you won't get badly hurt by slow seasons or recessions 18:59 Episode summary

  • #065 - Creating Your Own Definition Of Success & The Dangerous Side of Ambition & Goal Setting

What is success? Does it have to mean the same thing to all of us? And how can we break away from society's definition of success and forge our own - especially when our definition of success may be daringly different to other people?

These are questions I want us to tackle in this episode.

    I discuss...

    • Why it's dangerous to measure success through external circumstances & achievements

    • Why I don't think we should define success by how happy we feel either.

    • A balanced approach to goal-setting and ambition. (Because having big goals is NOT a damaging thing. But your perspective may be.)

  • #064 - Multi-Passionate? Here's How to Pick a Niche You Won't Get Bored Of, with Anna McVey-Tyson
Niching down. It's one of the ultimate debates in the world of online business. Should you pick a niche? Or is that too restrictive?

What about if you're multi-passionate? You don't want to get bored of your niche. You don't want to feel trapped in one box forever when there are soooo many things you love to do.

So is there a way for multi-passionate business owners to niche down without feeling trapped?

Yes! In this episode, you'll learn:

    • How to pick a niche when you're multi-passionate & why it doesn't mean you have to stick with it forever
    • Why you should build a brand, not just a business (and why temporarily niching down is a smart way to build it)
    • Why Anna was told she wouldn't live past the age of 27 & how that changed her perspective on niching

  • #063 - From Newbie Freelancer to 6-Figure Design Studio, with Amy Kuo

    If you…

    1. Are currently at a 9-5 job that drains you and you want to start your own online business
    2. You're in your first few years as a freelancer but you're struggling to book clients, or
    3. You book enough freelance clients and you're ready to scale to six figures (without burnout)

… Then this episode is perfect for you, because today's guest has navigated all of those situations!

In this interview, my student Amy Kuo walks us through her journey from being employed by Disney and then as a project manager, to quitting her job and becoming a struggling freelancer, to then turning that freelance business into a six figure design studio.

    Amy and I discuss:

    • Feeling tired and burnt out at a 9-5 job
    • Her journey from being employed to being her own boss (and the challenges that transition presented.)
    • How she went from newbie freelancer to six figure design studio the slow and steady way. This is a story of how it pays off to keep going even business isn't taking off very fast.
    • Why overnight success is a myth.
    • Why streamlining your client process is one of the most underrated yet important things you can do for your business.
    • How Amy found ONE client that makes up about 50% of her income.

    Does this sound like you?
    • Your projects finish but your clients keep bombarding you with questions (and they're usually all asking the same things!)
    • Your clients are regularly late providing files, feedback and payment.
    • You tried using a project management tool with your clients and they totally rejected the idea. They'd prefer to just email.

The easiest and fastest way to solve these issues? Create a welcome page.

In this episode, you'll learn how to use a welcome page to:

    • Establish your boundaries with clients
    • Set expectations upfront, before the project begins
