  • 24. Build a Brand Worth Following w/ Andrew Coates

In this episode I sit down with fitness expert Andrew Coates to speak about fostering non-transactional relationships, building a brand worth following, how to turn client conversations into useful content and the importance of supporting others without expectation.

Andrew is a writer, speaker, trainer, online coach and the host of the "Lift Free and Diet Hard" Podcast. His writing's have been featured in Men's Health Magazine, Testosterone Nation (T-Nation), The PTDC, Muscle and Fitness, Generation Iron and Bar Bend.

Andrew is the cofounder and MC of The Evolve Canadian Strength Symposium, an Edmonton Fitness Conference featuring industry leading speakers including cofounder Dean Somerset, Lee Boyce, and more. If there is a major conference in the fitness industry, there's a great chance Andrew will be speaking at it!

When I started The Solberg Performance Podcast, Andrew was one of the first people to reach out and congratulate me. I think that says a lot about Andrew as a person. Because as massive as he is in the fitness industry, he still makes time to reach out to newbies like me and encourage us to keep putting in the work. Andrew is an incredibly genuine human being, and it was an honor to pick his brain.

In this episode I sit down with the maestro of speed development Zach Campbell of Total Athlete Performance to talk about his journey as a performance specialist, NFL combine prep, outside the box training methods, making strong athletes fast and having hard conversations.

I have love for all my podcast guests. But, this one was extra special for me because of how I felt immediately after the call; understood and full of gratitude. Zach truly "gets it."

Yes, Zach is a master of his craft. He maximizes the gifts of his athletes and gets them performing at the highest level. But he also loves what he does and cares deeply about his people. That's what makes him great.

  • 22. Faith, Family and Football w/ Vince Biegel

In this episode I sit down with Vince Biegel, outside linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens to talk about training for the NFL Combine, the Senior Bowl, NIL deals in college football, faith, family and overcoming adversity.

Vince comes from a football family. His grandfather Ken Biegel played for UW-Eau Claire. His father Rocky and uncle T.D Biegel played at BYU. His younger brother Hayden Biegel played alongside him at UW-Madison. Football quite literally runs through his veins, annd it's evident when you watch him play.

Most people know Vince the football player. But what I enjoyed about this episode the most (and I hope you do too)... was talking to Vince the father, husband, brother, son and friend. Vince has had a heck of a journey filled with ups and downs. But through it all, he has stayed grounded and focused through faith and love for his family.

The day after we filmed this episode, Vince had his first full bodyweight field day after tearing his achilles. I, like so many others am incredibly excited to watch this guy flying around making plays again in the 2023 season.

  • 17. Disconnect to Reconnect

Over the past few years, I've become a big believer in speaking things into existence.

At the end of this episode I say, "I'm going to a seminar where Bret Contreras is speaking tomorrow. I'm going to ask him to come on the podcast."

The next day, I attended his seminar. He answered a lot of stereotypical training questions. But, he didn't answer them in a stereotypical strength coach way. He told a lot of stories. I'm a natural storyteller, so I loved it. I loved hearing about his life and perspective.

What resonated with me the most, was when he spoke about how burn out he was early in his coaching career. And that it wasn't until he stop coaching clients 10-12 hours a day that he actually started to realize his true potential. Writing an ebook, starting a blog, speaking at seminars, starting an online training business, etc are all things he wouldn't have done if he continued spending a bulk of his time training in-person clients. That really resonated with me. Because, I had a similar experience.

Bret is an incredibly smart, talented, likable guy. You don't get to where he is in life without being those things. But, what I respect the most about him... is his life story and how he went after his dreams even when some of the people closest to him doubted him.

When he published his first ebook, his dad told him... and I quote, "no one is going to buy your fucking ebook." Boy, was he wrong.

I stuck around after the seminar and waited until everyone was done taking selfies with him to approach him.

I was scared, but I approached him anyways. I told him he was one of the first coaches I ever heard speak at a Perform Better Conference in Chicago. I told him that his story really resonated with me. And then... I asked him if he'd come on the podcast. He said, "absolutely, just send me an email."

I was so excited. I turned and took a picture with him. My buddy messed up the picture.

    I didn't care.

I can't wait to hang and pick Bret's brain.

    Stayed tuned!

Much love to all my listeners!
