  • Experts: Hornets unlikely Asian variety

JACKSON — Despite reports declaring an invasive species of dangerous hornets was eradicated from the United States, men in Jackson and Frankville recently claimed to have killed a few Asian giant hornets, more commonly referred to as Murder Hornets. Woodie Snowden of Jackson took a photo of the giant hornet he killed inside a shed earlier in April after returning his lawn mower. The insect looked similar to photographs of the Murder Hornets posted by National Geographic, Science News and other media outlets. However, Meredith Shrader of Auburn University’s Entomology Department said the local hornets seen were unlikely to be...

  • Farmers could get health care break

Legislation to create health-care coverage for farmers made its debut before state lawmakers in a public hearing last week. The plan would enable the Alabama Farmers Federation to offer its members a farm bureau health plan. Similar plans are already operating in 10 other states, including Tennessee. The ALFA and the bill’s sponsor, state Rep. David Faulkner (R-Mountain Brook), say the concept could reduce health-coverage costs by 30% to 60% for self-employed farm families who often fall into a coverage gap. “The Farmers Federation is not looking to change Alabama’s health-care market,” Faulkner said. “Hear me out. This is not...

  • The saddest songs

Wait for a rainy, cold, black-and-white movie kind of afternoon. Have a box of tissues handy, then grab a pint of Ben and Jerry’s. If you’ve got time, watch Casablanca. Now, go back in time and think about a breakup — the one that wounded you the most, and then ask yourself, “What song could I absolutely not listen to during that sad time of my life?” Now you have a serious candidate for my list of breakup songs. I’ve listed a number of my breakup songs below, almost exclusively from the ’60s and ’70s. There are many great ones...

  • Turning passion into a career

In high school, I knew I wanted to become a social studies teacher. I had dozens of amazing teachers but between how much fun Ms. Davis made history class and how much fun she had teaching us, I knew I wanted to do the same thing. For just over 13 years, I was a social studies teacher. As times, people and standards changed, so did my career path. I did my homework and learned that many former teachers transition into sales. I worked as a sales rep in heavy-duty parts. I met dozens of wonderful customers and picked up some...

  • Combatting litter

GROVE HILL — ALPALS, the Alabama People Against a Littered State, has been reimplemented in Clarke County after county officials described multiple illegal dumping sites as atrocious and disgusting. Clarke County District 3 Commissioner Barry Chancey recently invited ALPALS to speak before the commission, and the program hopes to run strong again after years of absence. Chancey said former Clarke County Commissioner Patricia Dubose, who was also his fifth-grade teacher, once implemented ALPALS in the county, but years of dormancy had begun to rear their ugly head. “I ride the roads and it has gotten bad with a lot of...

  • Jackson health hub in old S-L building

JACKSON — In early 2023, Smart Bank gave the City of Jackson the former Federal Savings & Loan building on North College Avenue. The Jackson Health Care Authority was looking for a place to put some of its clinics, combining occupational therapy, home health and its pain, wound and fusion clinics. All of those clinics will now be in one building, it was announced at a recent Jackson City Council meeting. The consolidation will eliminate five rents and multiple utility bills and, as a result, could pay for itself in less than a year. Jackson Mayor Paul South read a...
