  • Storms wreak havoc

CLARKE COUNTY — Heavy rain over the weekend left many dirt roads in Clarke County extremely messy and forced some to close, but county Emergency Management Agency Director Roy Waite said all were passable as of Tuesday morning. “We have over 600 miles of dirt roads in Clarke County,” Waite said. “It’s one thing when flash floods hit, but slow rains really make things muddy and messy.” Waite said almost all of Clarke County received 4-5 inches of rain and in some cases more. The most significant flooding problems were near Fulton, Waite said. “Two years ago, there was major...

  • Local journalist wins prestigious award for maternity desert story

THOMASVILLE — Thomasville native and FOX-10 journalist Shelby Myers won an ABBY Award for investigative reporting concerning her work detailing the maternity crisis in south Alabama. The Alabama Broadcasters Association’s ABBY Awards recognize excellence in television and radio. More than 300 radio and television broadcasters represented stations statewide as colleagues and competitors collected statues. After labor and delivery services at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital closed on Aug. 16, 2024, Myers did a series titled “Undeliverable: A Maternal Healthcare Crisis” detailing how the closure created a “maternity desert” in Clarke County and forced expectant mothers to travel 100 miles or more...

  • Apparent murders-suicide rocks Whatley

WHATLEY—The deaths of a Whatley mother and son and the man who shot them Sunday morning appear to be two murders and a suicide, according to Clarke County Sheriff Dewayne Smith. Ashley Danielle Howell, 39, her 8-year-old son, and Edward Bernard Raine, 43, were found dead when officers with the Clarke County Sheriff ’s Department conducted a welfare check at Howell’s Whatley residence. Raine appeared to have died due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, apparently by a handgun, Smith said. Howell’s 11-year-old daughter was also found shot but survived and was transported to a trauma center in...

  • Taking care of business

Governments are in the business of making and spending money just like everybody else. That’s where tariffs come in. Nations control who can buy and sell within their borders by charging tariffs or taxes. In fact the USA has charged tariffs from the beginning of our nation to the extent that we didn’t even have a national income tax until 1913 when the Sixteenth Amendment was ratified. Before that, money to fund the government came primarily from tariffs on foreign nations. Last week President Trump defended his use of “reciprocal tariffs” by showing a list of more than 180 nations...
