Our guests this morning are Mary Courtney Burke and Donna Cunningham, co-chairs of the annual Richstone Family Center Pier to Pier Walkathon.

Mary Courtney Burke has been involved with Richstone since 1981 when her mom, Dorothy Courtney, became Richstone’s Executive Director, a post she held for 24 years. Mary’s early volunteer duties included creating the newsletter and lots and lots of folding and stuffing for Richstone mailings. She studied Latin American Studies at Stanford University and received her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

Donna Cunningham runs her own consultancy firm, providing business affairs, operational and organizational services to clients in the media and entertainment space. Previously, Donna served in a number of operational, business and legal affairs roles for global media companies based in Los Angeles and worked for 12 years at Sony Pictures Television.

The annual Richstone Family Center Pier to Pier Walkathon takes place on Saturday, April 28 at the Manhattan Beach Pier and this morning, we’re going to learn what attendees can expect at this very popular South Bay event.

Our guest this morning is Ken Hira, Executive Vice President for Kosmont Companies.

An expert in retail development and strategies for retail attraction, Ken has over 25 years of varied experience in virtually every aspect of real estate financing, downtown revitalization, acquisition, entitlement, development, asset management and disposition. His expertise is in identifying retail tenants and negotiating retail and mixed-use projects that can revitalize communities and assist in economic development/tax generation programs.

Ken is an active volunteer leader of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).  He serves as the ICSC Western Division P3 Retail Chair, advocating public-private partnerships, while previously serving as the ICSC Southern California State Director, Program Committee Chair and Alliance Co-Chair. He holds a Bachelor degree in Economics and Business from UCLA.

Ken is a Keynote Speaker at the Manhattan Beach Chamber Economic Forum taking place on Wednesday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Joslyn Community Center.

Our guests this morning are Barbara Voss, Economic Development Manager for the City of El Segundo,  Jay Hoeschler, Partner, Design Director of Avid Trails and Marsha Hansen, President/CEO of the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce.

Barbara Voss joined the City of El Segundo in August 2015 and serves as the City’s Economic Development Manager.  She is a community and economic development professional with extensive experience in managing business attraction, retention and expansion initiatives for state and local government, as well as experience in tax advisory and real estate development consulting.

Marsha Hansen was born and raised in Logansport, Indiana. She graduated from Purdue University with a BA in Public Relations. After working for Hyatt Hotels in the Midwest, she found herself in Southern California working in the hotel industry.

Jay Hoeschler is a founding partner of Avid Trails, a national planning and design firm specializing in hiking and biking trail systems for communities, parks and municipalities. Fitness and health are at the core of Avid Trails.

This morning, we’re going to learn about the recent Downtown El Segundo Beautification efforts, designed to improve the look and feel of Main Street. The initiatives are being led by the city’s downtown committee of which we have three members with us today.

Our guest this morning is Tonya McKenzie, owner and principal consultant of Sand & Shores PR Firm in Redondo Beach.

Tonya has spent over 15 years in sales, marketing, and Public Relations. Along with her work with speakers, authors, and small businesses, Tonya is a newly elected board member for the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce and an appointed member of the Redondo Beach GPAC, shaping the aesthetics of Redondo Beach for the next 30 plus years.

She has more than 20 years of public speaking experience at educational institutions, in local politics, corporate training & leadership, and community relations. Tonya started early in her career with campaign speeches to run and be elected to an Associated Student Directorship position at CSUN.

Tonya is the author of a memoir titled, Childhood Memories of Cartoons and Murder. This well-crafted book covers an unthinkable act of violence that Tonya witnessed as a small child and the incredible story of her resilience that guided her through various other episodes of violence and chaos throughout her young life. She covers topics that she passionately speaks about; non-combat PTSD, predatory behavior, generational dysfunction and domestic violence.

Tonya is also a featured speaker at Elevate Los Angeles, a one-day leadership accelerator for black women, taking place on Saturday, April 21 at The Beach House.

In addition to providing overall leadership and guiding the vision of Ignited, Eric leads the strategic planning and business development efforts. He is also the owner of El Camp, a co-working space, and Box Boulevard, a subscription box company.

Eric is currently Chairman to the Office of President of thinkLA, the trade association that promotes Los Angeles as the new world center for creative thinking and innovation in the fields of advertising, marketing and media.

Our guests this morning are Jim Mueller, producer of South Bay Stories Show and performer Wanda Maureen Miller

Originally from Albuquerque, Jim Mueller now resides in Redondo Beach. He is known around the South Bay as a writer, producer and actor of great variety. He produced the first South Bay Stories Show in Oct, 2015, produced and starred in the Hermosa Beach production of the Tony Award winning play The Gin Game in 2012, after writing, producing and acting in the short film Everybody Says Goodbye as well as the award-winning feature film, Dewitt & Maria. 

Wanda Maureen Miller, known as Mo, grew up on an Arkansas farm, got an education, moved to California, and taught college English. She has published four books—a historical romance, The French, and three college textbooks. Her memoir, Last Trip Home, will be published this May by She Writes Press.

The South Bay Stories Show will present two performances on Saturday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 at 1:30 p.m. at the Second Story Theater in Hermosa Beach and this morning, Jim and Wanda are going to explain what attendees can expect.
