Our guest this morning is Dana Murray, a Marine Scientist and Environmental Manager for the City of Manhattan Beach.

Dana crafts environmental sustainability policies and programs for the city, including climate resiliency, coastal adaptation planning for sea level rise, reducing plastic pollution, smart water management, and climate change mitigation. Formerly Dana was the Senior Coastal Policy Manager at Heal the Bay where she worked on science and policy issues related to coastal habitats and marine wildlife in California. She developed Los Angeles' MPA Watch citizen science monitoring program, assessing how people use L.A.’s underwater parks. Completing hundreds of scientific dives underwater, she has been a research diver for Reef Check since 2003. Dana earned her master’s degree in Environmental Science and Management from UC Santa Barbara, specializing in Conservation Planning and Coastal Marine Resource Management, and her bachelor’s in Geography and Environmental Studies from UCLA.

This morning we’re doing to learn about the various environmental policies Dana is working on in Manhattan Beach.

Our guests this morning are Chef Michael Shafer, owner of The Depot; David Wolfram, President of Destination: Art; Laurie Latham Brandt, co-owner of the Red Car Brewery & Restaurant; and Rebecca Chere, Owner of Organically At Your Best Spa.

Chef Shafer opened The Depot in 1991. Deft and imaginative, Michael's menu draws from his whole experience. Serious foodies are delighted, the sophisticated palate sated, yet his playfulness prevails without pretension.

  

David Wolfram was born in Buffalo, NY and moved to California in 1975. He is a founding Board Member and Studio Artist at Destination: Art, an art Co-op in Old Torrance. He became President in April 2018.  He also teaches, does workshops and demos, and judges shows for Southern California Art groups. 

Rebecca Chere opened her spa, Organically At Your Best, six years ago in Redondo Beach, with the intent for clients to feel heard and not rushed through their services. She wanted them to feel like they were at home, part of the OAYB family, and that each service they booked was customized for their needs at any given moment.

So, this morning, we’re going to learn about Downtown Torrance Art Walk taking place on Saturday, June 30 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Our guests this morning are Nancy Wilcox, co-chair of the South Bay Coalition to End Homelessness and Shari Weaver, Director of the Coordinated Entry System for the South Bay.

Nancy has been a “full-time” volunteer for the past 23 years, most recently serving as co-chair of the South Bay Coalition to End Homelessness since 2013.  In this capacity, she helps oversee the day-to-day operational workings of the organization.  The Coalition’s mission is to provide education about what homelessness looks like in the South Bay, and advocacy to bring more services and housing to our under-resourced region.

Shari Weaver is the South Bay’s Director of the Coordinated Entry System overseeing all its populations - families, adult Individuals and youth.  Working for Harbor Interfaith Services for 17 years, she has a long and successful history of providing staff leadership and compliance on programs serving those experiencing homelessness. Due to her deep operational expertise, she currently sits on the CES Policy Working Group that crafts functional procedures for this major countywide initiative. Shari is also a board member of the L.A. Continuum of Care that advises HUD direct funding to Los Angeles.

This morning, we’ll be discussing the homeless crisis and learn what is being done to end homelessness in the South Bay.

Our guests this morning are Angela Wilson and Lisa Daggett-Cummings from the South Bay Children’s Health Center.

Angela Wilson joined SBCHC in June 2017 as the Director of Mental Health Programs.  She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 15 years of experience in community based mental health services, including developing and managing programs throughout Los Angeles County.  She is trained in several evidence based practices used at SBCHC, including Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Managing and Adapting Practices, 

Lisa Daggett-Cummings is the Director of Development and her career has been spent almost entirely in the nonprofit arena.  She has spent 30 years leading fundraising, marketing and fund development efforts for emerging nonprofit organizations in the areas of healthcare, education and social services, leveraging leadership and other key volunteers to achieve fundraising goals. Lisa is a Californian native, and married with three children. 

This morning, we’re going to learn about the programs and services available at The South Bay Children’s Health Center and the annual Champions for Children 5K Trail Run/Walk on Saturday, June 23 starting at 8:30 a.m. at Ernie Howlett Park in Rolling Hills Estates.

He is a longtime member of Rotary International and past Rotary Club president. He is very active in the MB Chamber, and is on the Economic Development Committee for the Redondo Chamber. He is a “UC Guy”, graduating Summa Cum Laude from UC San Diego in 1990, and from the UCLA School of Law 1994. He is an avid surfer, and competed in the sport up through his undergrad years – now he just has fun with it all over the South Bay and the world.

Our guests this morning are Stam Hill and Peter Neushul from the South Bay Coastliners.

A Barbershop Harmony Chorus based in Redondo Beach, this 50-member men’s chorus is a charitable organization renowned for its commitment to community service and philanthropy. Stam and Peter write the scripts for the annual show and the secret to their success isn’t talent - its Peter’s stash of scotch. A typical script meeting involves brainstorming while indulging in Peter’s wonderful libations. Neither thinks of themselves as great playwrights and no one in the chorus thinks they’re great actors. They’re just a group of men doing their best to entertain an audience. This year, they decided to try something different, so instead of having the show in a theater, they would recreate a real speakeasy for four performances of the Golden Globe nominated motion picture, Scarface; an action-packed, gangster musical at the Polyester Club on June 9 & 10 and June 16 & 17 with matinees at 2 p.m. and evening shows at 7 p.m. For additional information and ticket purchase, visit the website at www.coastliners.org.

Our guests this morning are George Renfro, Creative Director and Co-Founder and Tyler Leonard, Director of Guest Happiness from the El Segundo Art Walk.

George is a third generation South Bay local. He’s a designer that works in branding, digital and print and has donated, literally, thousands of hours of pro bono graphic design work for ESAW, including the logo, hats, tee shirts, posters, banners, postcards, and maps. Around town, he’s also designed the Smoky Hollow Studios logo and the logo for the newly refurbished Lucy Jane Building. He’s young, hip and kinda the face of a new El Segundo.

Tyler Leonard was born and raised in El Segundo, finished high school and went to San Diego State. He’s passionate about volleyball, golf, the Lakers, and traveling with no itinerary. After a 3 year stint at a consulting firm, Tyler decided to take a break from work and travel the world with his good buddy George - he considers it the best decision he’s ever made. 

This morning, we’re going to learn a bit more about this year’s El Segundo Art Walk, the first of which will take place on Thursday, Thursday, June 21 from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Downtown and Sleepy Hollow districts.
