Our guest this morning is Chef Michael Shafer. Owner of The Depot Restaurant in Downtown Torrance.

Growing up in Buffalo, New York, Michael early understood food as a creative medium and social binder. As a child, he'd cook for his family and as a teenager, for his friends. Though his resume begins in the pantry of a private club and he put himself through school working in restaurants, his first calling was to Art School at Buffalo State College.

Michael has raised millions of dollars for a wide variety of charities.  He personally hosts two events a year, one for Pediatric Therapy Network, and one for the Scott Newman Center.  Each event raises over $100,000 a year.  In addition, Michael donates time, money and his culinary skills to other community charities including; the Torrance Education Foundation, Palos Verdes Education Foundation, the Wellness Community, Little Company of Mary, For our Children, the Concern Foundation, and the Palos Verdes Art Center.  Michael has been a staple for the past 15 years at the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Food and Wine Festival and he donates over $5,000 worth of gift certificates or in kind donations to other nonprofit groups. 

This morning, we’re going to learn about the Triple B Romp & Stomp Chef Shafer hosts each year. It takes place on Sunday, June 4 from noon to 6 p.m. in The Depot parking lot.

Our guest this morning is Nigel Heath, CEO of Absolution Brewing Company located in Torrance.

Nigel started brewing (& tasting!) in 1978 in his UK homeland. After a physics major in college his career steered him into leadership in the high tech world, but he remained loyal to his science roots in “the study of how particles interact and combine with one another” – particularly barley, hops, yeast, and water! California became his home in 1994, and since then he has been motivated to promote the complexities and flavors of the Old & New World craft ales. He is now living that dream with Absolution Brewing Company. Today, he is excited to combine the great traditions of Ye Olde English Ales with the creative genius of his Californian Brewer and produce truly exceptional craft beers to satisfy the interests of the modern beer connoisseur.

So this morning it’s all about beer…. but they do a lot more than just brew at Absolution! They regularly have food trucks and Saturday morning yoga, and recently partnered with 21 Square on several menu items.

Our guests this morning are Bree and Jason Goldwater, Founders of BOX Human Landscapers.

In 1999, Bree and Jason created BOX® – a bikini waxing shop based in Las Vegas, NV. They had $6,000 to their name, and rented a 498 square-foot space for .60 a foot. The neighbors included a transgender bar, an escort service, and an Asian-themed bar that sold $65 domestic beers.

Despite being small, and way off the beaten path, the audacity of a bikini waxing shop in Sin City named BOX® started a very big conversation. InStyle Magazine wrote about it. The Travel Channel featured it. Local and online publications praised it, and by 2002, they moved to a slightly better location with a significant local following of soccer moms, suburban housewives, and single girls. In fact, people were traveling from all over the country just to get waxed by BOX®.

BOX® human landscapers® became an equal opportunity waxing shop. Jason even trademarked the phrase Sac & Crack® many years ago as a joke. It now accounts for more than 30% (and steadily growing) of the revenues from their Las Vegas and Manhattan Beach locations.

Bree and Jason are currently formulating ointments for acne and blemishes, sun burns, wet suit and board short chaffing, and then some.

I think it’s safe to say, our listeners are going to learn everything they need to know about personal grooming for their various people parts.

Our guest this morning is Amani Roberts, Chief Musical Curator at The Amani Experience.

Amani Roberts, aka DJ AmRo, is a Washington DC born and bred DJ who has been a resident of California since 2007. A student of music since learning the saxophone at a very young age, and a DJ since 2008, Amani’s musical knowledge spans numerous decades and crosses multiple genres.

He graduated from the internationally renowned Scratch Academy DJ School. This intense year-long program - which is the equivalent of a DJ College - has elevated DJ AmRo’s already impressive skill set.

DJ AmRo has worked in the hospitality industry for over 20 years and has provided music or MC services at events all over the world. The ability to listen to and collaborate with each client continues to set The Amani Experience apart from other DJ services.

DJ AmRo currently has residencies on various nights throughout Los Angeles. He also teaches up and coming DJ’s and creates remixes and original music for a variety of artists. Little Big Town, Jodeci, Kevin Garrett, Julia Michaels, Changing Faces and Larry Graham are just a few of the artists DJ AmRo has successfully remixed.

This morning, we’re going to learn a bit about what it takes to be a successful DJ and the services The Amani Experience provides.

Beach Cities Symphony - Music Director, Barry Brisk

Barry Brisk first conducted in public at the age of fourteen, when he performed selections from South Pacific at his graduation from Webster Junior High School in West Los Angeles.

As a student he also conducted the orchestras at University High School, Mount St. Mary's College, and the University of Music (formerly Academy of Music) in Vienna, Austria where he studied with the prominent conductor/teacher Hans Swarowsky.

Professionally, Brisk has conducted many orchestras in Southern California, as well as in Mexico and Austria.

 

Maestro Brisk has been Music Director of the Beach Cities Symphony since 1994 and is particularly proud of having expanded the orchestra's repertoire. 

He has conducted works by more than eighty composers, more than a dozen of whom are living.

Our guest this morning is Mike Garcia, Founder of Enviroscape LA.

Mike Garcia offers complete and sustainable native garden landscaping design, installation, and maintenance for residential and commercial property in and around the South Bay.  He began his career in the horticultural field more than 30 years ago.  After earning his college degree in Ornamental Horticulture, he earned his Landscape Contractor license and his Tree Service Contractors license. Under his leadership, Enviroscape has won numerous landscape and water feature awards at the local, state national and international levels.

Mike holds a certification in Pond building at the national level through the NAPP and is only one of 8 Internationally Certified Pond Builders in the world.

Enviroscape’s most notable work can be at the Science Museum in downtown Los Angeles. The Enviroscape crew recently finished a 50-foot waterfall at the world famous Greystone Mansion, which is owned by the city of Beverly Hills.  Last year, his company earned 4 first place finishes at the prestigious CLCA landscape competition, held in Los Angeles.  On occasion, Mike flies to Sacramento to assist the Contractors State License Board to revise and update the written tests.  Enviroscape specializes in drought tolerant gardens and drip irrigation.

This morning, we’re going to learn about drought tolerant landscaping, how to save money on water bills and other environmentally friendly gardening tips.
