Kim Ruggles’ professional career began with the American Diabetes Association, where she planned walks, cycling events, various galas and an annual golf tournament. She then moved onto the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce as the Program and Event Manager where she planned networking mixers, award shows, the mayoral State of the City Address, product launches and seminars.  

Amy Erret is the owner of E3 Vehicles located in Redondo Beach and she’s busy preaching the gospel of neighborhood electric vehicles to the people of the Beach Cities. Once entrenched in the world of medical sales before leaving to raise her family, Amy was feeling the itch to dive back into business.

Steve Farguson is the VP of Sales at Absolution Brewing. Born and bred in the South Bay, Steve is in his element sharing his experience and knowledge of Absolution’s extensive and ever evolving range of products with craft beer enthusiasts. 

Dane Farguson, Steve's son, grew up on Coronado Island in San Diego, surrounded by the great beer culture of that city. He recently graduated from Loyola Marymount University and has been part of the Absolution team since moving to Los Angeles in January 2015.

This morning, we’re going to discuss the growth of the craft beer industry in the South Bay and what guests can expect at this year’s Bite at the Beach.

Our guest this morning is Mike Russell, owner of Pedone’s Pizzeria in Riviera Village

Mike is a life-long resident of the South Bay and serial entrepreneur. He originally met his great friend, Lou Pedone, while playing basketball.

With absolutely no restaurant experience, Mike partnered with Lou to open the fourth Pedone’s location in Riviera Village. Mike eventually bought out Lou and that super successful eatery has been open for 20 years now.

To honor the Pedone family, Mike has stepped up to sponsor the now defunct Fourth of July Torrance Beach Fireworks show that had been privately funded for years by the Briles family.

Palos Verdes residents, Rick and Carri Bender, set up a fundraising page last year, www.palosverdesfireworks.com, to continue the very popular holiday fireworks show. Unfortunately, they didn’t raise enough money to do the show this year. When Mike heard about it, he contacted Rick and offered to provide the funds.

So, on July 4, 2018, there will be a fireworks show, and this morning, we’ll get all the details and learn what folks can expect next year.?

Our guests this morning are Mark Lipps and Tamsin Green from the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Mark Lipps, the President and CEO of the Manhattan Beach Chamber, is a 20+ year resident of Manhattan Beach. He is a parent, dog and tortoise owner, homeowner and husband of Tammy Lipps, Chef/Owner of The Ripe Choice, a local catering business. Mark worked for 30 years in the TV industry and was an executive with Fox Broadcasting for 18 years. In addition to his professional life, Mark has been very involved in the community as a graduate of Leadership Manhattan, Community Police Academy and MBCERT; he is a member of MB Rotary and MB Chamber of Commerce; was appointed to a city commission (PPIC); was a Neighborhood Watch Block Captain and has been active in many local volunteer activities. He has also written a popular local newsletter for the last fifteen years called HAPPY FRIDAY, NEIGHBORS.

Tamsin Green is the former head of PR for Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising Los Angeles, and has also worked for advertising agencies Chiat Day and Ogilvy & Mather.  With an interest in non-profits, she has worked in the community with Big Sisters of Los Angeles, Guide Dogs for the Blind, and also headed up PR for the John Wayne Cancer Institute, working with doctors and children cancer survivors. A resident and fan of the South Bay community for 25 years, she is now the Director of Marketing for the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce.

This morning, we’re going to meet the new Chamber staff member and discuss the direction the Chamber will take going forward.

Our guest this morning is composer and musical architect, Peter T. Myers.

With five decades of experience in the music and entertainment industries, Peter joyfully crafts detailed compositions, illuminating lively stories through counterpoint, textured harmonies and striking rhythms.

He has worked extensively with many gifted artists, groups and professionals, including Sarah Vaughn, Sammy Davis, Jr., Marvin Gaye, Bill Conti, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Doc Severinsen, Olivia Newton-John, The London Symphony Orchestra and Placido Domingo.

His career took off in the late 1960s and led to a string of successes working with renowned artists, directors and musicians on groundbreaking projects.

He had an extensive partnership with Oscar®-winning composer Bill Conti, who hired him to provide orchestrations for a dozen films, among them An Unmarried Woman, Rocky III, The Wiz, For Your Eyes Only and Private Benjamin.

For 30 years, he composed for Aaron Spelling, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Lorimar and Viacom. He provided weekly scores for wildly popular television shows including Dynasty, Falcon’s Crest and Jake and the Fatman.

The Peter Myers Orchestra will be playing at the historic Lighthouse Café in Hermosa Beach this Sunday, July 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and this morning we get to pick the brain of this legendary musician and listen to some of what attendees can expect this weekend.

Our guests this morning are Bree and Jason Goldwater, Founders of BOX Human Landscapers.

In 1999, Bree and Jason created BOX® – a bikini waxing shop based in Las Vegas, NV. They had $6,000 to their name, and rented a 498 square-foot space for .60 a foot. The neighbors included a transgender bar, an escort service, and an Asian-themed bar that sold $65 domestic beers.

Despite being small, and way off the beaten path, the audacity of a bikini waxing shop in Sin City named BOX® started a very big conversation. InStyle Magazine wrote about it. The Travel Channel featured it. Local and online publications praised it, and by 2002, they moved to a slightly better location with a significant local following of soccer moms, suburban housewives, and single girls. In fact, people were traveling from all over the country just to get waxed by BOX®.

BOX® human landscapers® became an equal opportunity waxing shop. Jason even trademarked the phrase Sac & Crack® many years ago as a joke. It now accounts for more than 30% (and steadily growing) of the revenues from their Las Vegas and Manhattan Beach locations.

Bree and Jason are currently formulating ointments for acne and blemishes, sun burns, wet suit and board short chaffing, and then some.

I think it’s safe to say, our listeners are going to learn everything they need to know about personal grooming for their various people parts.

Our guest this morning is Jon Mesko of the Mesko Restaurant Group.

With a lifetime of restaurant experience and a myriad of successful businesses, Jon Mesko has brought the vision of Rock & Brews to life in the greater Los Angeles Area. Jon received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, and Operations from Davenport University in 1999. In 2007, he opened a clothing store in Manhattan Beach where he met restauranteur and hotelier Michael Zislis. After years of working across the street from each other, in August of 2012, they decided to partner, and Jon opened his first restaurant, Rock & Brews, in Redondo Beach. With the success of that first restaurant, Jon launched the Mesko Restaurant Group and opened his second Rock & Brews three years later in Buena Park. Since then Jon has opened two more restaurants, each more successful than the last.

Anyone that has ever been to Rock & Brews understands why the franchise is so popular. It’s the kind of family-friendly, beer garden that is so common in Germany, but with a very American rock & roll heart. So, this morning, we’re going to learn a bit more about our local Rock & Brews and the role it plays in the community.

Our guest this morning is local, professional photographer, JP Cordero.

JP is an image and content creator via DSLR camera photography and various, never limited, image recording devices. Grown and salted in the South Bay, JP commenced upon young adulthood from Mira Costa High School class of 2000, attended El Camino College, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in geography from CSU Long Beach. He is proud father to his three year old son Hudson Oliver, and humbled husband of Mrs. Penelope Cordero.

Just like his Mother, Jean Cordero, owner of Entertaining Friends Catering, JP decided to turn his passion into something that would support his family and give him a chance to capture the smiles and creations of the people in his hometown, across the United States and around the world.

Aside from all the fun of work, JP and his family love to travel, as often as possible, but find just as much leisure and enjoyment from staycations and local exploration. Daily strand cruises are a must.

Anyone that lives in the South Bay is familiar with JP’s images even though you may not know it. He is anywhere and everywhere, documenting the scene that is the South Bay.

Our guest this morning is Sam Knapp, Partner in the Downtowner.

Sam runs the Southern California Downtowner locations along with his two business partners, Jake Allsop and Anthony Killough. He was born in Portland, Oregon where Jake, Anthony and he became close friends at the age of 14. Sam graduated from the University of Oregon in 2007 with a BS in Accounting and became a licensed CPA in 2010.

He moved to Southern California in 2010 and began working at an accounting and consulting firm.  Prior to the Downtowner, he was a Transaction Advisory Services Manager where he focused on financial due diligence for Merger & Acquisition projects.

It was in 2013, that Jake, Tony and Sam were visiting friends in Delray Beach, FL and they saw the Downtowner in action just after it was launched there. Delray was the first location and they now operate in Aspen, Tampa and Newport Beach and Manhattan Beach. After taking that first ride, they knew they had to bring it to Southern California……and here they are!

The Downtowner was an immediate success and has quickly changed the way we get around Manhattan Beach these days!

We have a couple of returning guests this morning - Jed Mottley and Jack Maher from local favorite South Bay band, Feed the Kitty.

Feed The Kitty may just be the hardest working original/cover band in Southern California, if not the world. Performing over 300 shows a year, these guys can do it all: bars, clubs, restaurants, weddings, live karaoke, corporate events and private parties. With Feed the Kitty, anything goes.

Having an arsenal of thousands of songs, versatility is the name of the game for this band as they can provide a wide variety of quality live music to fit almost any occasion.

Originally from Tucson AZ, band members Jed Mottley (Bass) and Jon Shumway (Drums) moved to Los Angeles and hooked up with Jack Maher (Guitar/Vocals) in 2004.

A couple of years ago, the band completed a short documentary, Feed the Kitty: The Movie.  A film crew followed them around for one week as they played 9 gigs in 6 days, fresh off their first ever European tour.

They recently recorded a new CD, Westbound & Down at Dave Grohl's Studio 606 on the legendary Neve 8028 analogue soundboard featured in the documentary Sound City.

This morning, we’re going to talk about some of their recent gigs, the new album, and what it was like recording at Studio 606. We’ll also listen to a few of the songs off the new CD Westbound & Down.

Our guest this morning is Redondo Beach Community Services Director, John La Rock.

 

John has enjoyed over thirty years in public service across the United States. With a background in art history and cultural arts management, John has held managerial and administrative positions with cultural and event organizations in New York, Houston, Boston, and Maryland. Work has taken him to all fifty states in the continental U.S. and in 2007 he settled in Redondo Beach. John is committed to creating and building upon collaborations between City staff and the highly engaged business, residential, tourism and educational community sectors in Redondo Beach and the greater South Bay. In his role as Community Services Director, John supervises the Recreation, Passports, Transit, Housing, Cultural and Senior and Family Services programs. He also supports the health and wellness programs of

the Blue Zones Project and hopes everyone takes the time to slow down and enjoy the gift that is Redondo Beach.

This morning, John is going to fill us in on the upcoming Fourth of July Fireworks.
