STORY 1: Thirty-seven Cars Were Broken Into at Gwinnett Schools Tuesday. Here's What We Know.

Gwinnett County Public Schools Police are investigating a series of car break-ins at Archer High School, Trip Elementary School, and Brookwood Elementary School. A total of 37 cars were unlawfully entered or broken into within an hour and a half. The incidents involved theft of personal items, including electronics, driver's licenses, credit cards, and purses. The police are reviewing security camera footage and collaborating with local and state law enforcement agencies to determine any patterns. Although the thieves encountered various levels of vehicle security, the police emphasize the importance of securing valuables, locking car doors, and reporting suspicious activity. The investigation is ongoing. Chief Tony Lockard urges reporting at 770-513-6715 or via the GCPS Tips app.

STORY 2: Gwinnett Commissioners Urge Legislators To Reconsider Mulberry Cityhood Proposal

Gwinnett County commissioners unanimously approved a resolution urging state legislators to carefully consider the implications of creating the proposed city of Mulberry in the northeastern part of the county. State Rep. Chuck Efstration introduced legislation for a referendum on Mulberry's incorporation, responding to concerns about a 700-unit apartment development. County officials emphasize the current service delivery model's efficiency and comprehensive nature. The commissioners argue that Mulberry's structure, relying on Gwinnett for services like police and fire protection, may negatively impact the proposed city, the existing 16 cities, and Gwinnett as a whole. A fact sheet outlining concerns has been sent to Gwinnett legislators.

STORY 3: Premature birth can affect children’s development in later life: study

A new 13-year study, following over a million births, reveals that children born moderately (32-33 weeks) or late preterm (34-36 weeks) face higher long-term risks of neurodevelopmental difficulties. These difficulties include conditions like epilepsy, autism, ADHD, and cerebral palsy. The study emphasizes that children born in these windows constitute 80% of all preterm births, and the risks should not be underestimated. The research, published in The BMJ, examined 1,281,690 children born in Sweden between 1998 and 2012, concluding that compared to full-term births, those born moderately or late preterm showed higher risks for various neurodevelopmental impairments.

STORY 4: Kanekoa Texeira Tabbed as New Gwinnett Stripers Manager

The Atlanta Braves have announced their minor league coaching staffs for the 2024 season. Kanekoa Texeira, a former G-Braves pitcher, will manage the Gwinnett Stripers, joined by pitching coaches Kevin McAvoy and Mike McCarthy, hitting coach Dan DeMent, and coach Wigberto Nevarez. Texeira, the eighth Gwinnett manager, has prior coaching experience and managed High-A Rome and Double-A Mississippi. McAvoy, returning to Gwinnett, served as the Stripers’ interim pitching coach in 2022. McCarthy joins from the Oakland Athletics as the bullpen coach. DeMent, with 15 years in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, becomes the hitting coach, and Nevarez continues as coach for Gwinnett. The staff also includes strength and conditioning coach Tyler Enns and athletic trainers Greg Harrel and Joel Wiggins. Gwinnett Stripers’ Opening Night is on April 2 against Louisville.

STORY 5: Georgia Begins Work on Sanford Stadium Hedges

The University of Georgia's football team is revitalizing the iconic hedges around Sanford Stadium, known as "Between the Hedges," a tradition since the stadium's dedication in 1929. The current hedges, installed during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, are reaching the end of their typical lifespan. The university has been growing replacement hedges, and the Athletic Association will start proactive revitalization work in February. This project involves full soil replacement, irrigation, drainage work, and replanting with the same lineage of hedges that have been part of the Georgia sidelines for 95 years. The revitalization is set to be completed by the 2024 G-Day Game.

STORY 6: Atlanta Falcons Announce Raheem Morris as Head Coach

The Atlanta Falcons have appointed Raheem Morris as their new head coach. Morris, who spent the last three seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, takes over as the 19th head coach in Falcons history. In addition, Terry Fontenot will continue as the general manager, reporting directly to team owner Arthur M. Blank on football matters. Rich McKay remains the CEO of AMB Sports and Entertainment but will no longer be involved in day-to-day football operations. Morris brings 26 years of NFL experience and recently helped the Rams secure a Super Bowl title. His tenure officially begins as the head coach for the 2024 season.

STORY 7: Kenneth Eugene Smith executed by nitrogen gas in Alabama for 1988 murder-for-hire scheme

Kenneth Eugene Smith was executed in Alabama for the 1988 murder-for-hire of Elizabeth Sennett, marking the first-ever use of nitrogen gas for execution. The process began at 7:56 p.m., and Smith was pronounced dead at 8:25 p.m. He made a final statement through a mask, expressing love and peace. Smith's execution was initially halted in November 2022 due to a failed lethal injection attempt. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected appeals arguing that the nitrogen gas method violated the Eighth Amendment. Smith's role in the murder-for-hire was linked to the death of Elizabeth Sennett in 1988.

The research identifies the MERVL endogenous retrovirus as playing a crucial role in the transition to pluripotency during early embryo development. The MERVL-gag protein from this virus was found to modulate the action of the URI gene, providing a new understanding of the symbiotic co-evolution of endogenous retroviruses with host cells.

Tung "Tim" Le, a prominent figure in Gwinnett County's Vietnamese community, has officially announced his candidacy for the county's Board of Commissioners, targeting the District 1 seat currently held by Commissioner Kirkland Carden. Le, if elected, would be the first Vietnamese-American to serve on the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners. His campaign priorities include public safety, property tax reduction, support for small businesses, and strengthening the relationship between law enforcement and minority communities. Le, with a background in mechanical engineering and real estate, has been actively involved in various community organizations and boards. He emphasizes his diverse background as an asset for serving all Gwinnett residents.

STORY 2: Mary Kay Murphy Names Her Preferred Successor On Gwinnett School Board

Retiring Gwinnett County school board member Mary Kay Murphy has endorsed Yanin Cortes as the best choice to succeed her in the District 3 school board seat. Cortes, a former Shiloh High School teacher and co-founder of Mojitos Cuban American Bistro, stands out for her background as an educator, businesswoman, mother, and community leader. Murphy highlighted Cortes' commitment to fair compensation for teachers, positive work environments, and student-centered policies to improve reading scores and graduation rates. Cortes' experience as an immigrant also brings a valuable perspective to understanding challenges faced by students new to the U.S. in a county with over a quarter of residents born outside the U.S.

STORY 3: One of world’s deadliest spiders’ venom could help save heart attack victims

Australian scientists have identified a molecule in the venom of funnel-web spiders that could serve as a life-saving treatment for heart attacks. The drug candidate, called Hi1a, was found to prevent heart cells from dying due to a lack of oxygen in preclinical tests. Additionally, it may extend the lives of donor hearts used for organ transplants. The venom molecule, tested on beating human heart cells, blocks acid-sensing ion channels, preventing the death signal that typically occurs in heart cells during an attack. Researchers hope to conduct human clinical trials for stroke and heart disease in the next two to three years.

New research suggests that harboring the common stomach bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) may raise the risk of Alzheimer's disease by 11% in people aged 50 and older. The study analyzed data from over four million people in the UK between 1988 and 2019. H. pylori infection, which can cause indigestion, gastritis, ulcers, and stomach cancer, was linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer's. While the causes of Alzheimer's are complex, this study contributes to growing evidence about the potential role of infections in the disease's development. Researchers hope these findings will inform prevention strategies for Alzheimer's.

The research suggests that the immune system adapts to new variants, with memory T cells formed during Omicron infection responding to later strains of the virus. This heightened response is observed even against later Omicron variants. The findings offer insights into the evolving nature of the immune response and may influence vaccine development strategies by inducing memory T cell defenses against emerging variants.

STORY 5: Fulton 19 update: Prosecutor melodrama, squabble over documents, Eastman courthouse sighting

In the ongoing Fulton County criminal conspiracy case against Donald Trump and 18 others, a recent twist involves allegations of an improper romantic relationship between Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, a special prosecutor Nathan Wade, and a divorce court filing showing flights for them. The court filing by Wade's estranged wife claims she was not informed about Wade's hiring by Willis for the election interference investigation. Willis had filed a protective order against Jocelyn Wade, leading to an emergency motion. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee has scheduled a Feb. 15 hearing to discuss the allegations of prosecutorial misconduct.

A survey of 5,000 Americans, commissioned by Herbalife, reveals that Californians experience the best sleep quality, despite scoring only six and a half for quality out of 10. The top five states for sleep quality also include South Carolina, New York, Maryland, and New Jersey. However, 55% of respondents can't remember their last "perfect night" of sleep, and 78% can't recall the last "perfect week." Only 48% claim to know how to get a good night's sleep, with common activities before bedtime including watching TV (66%) and scrolling through phones (38% on social media). Seventy-eight percent of respondents aim to improve their sleep in 2024.

STORY 7: Sports Betting, Education Expected To Be Top Issues In The Legislature

Georgia state Reps. Dewey McClain and Soo Hong have highlighted sports betting as a key issue during the 2024 legislative session. Both legislators discussed various issues, including Gov. Brian Kemp's legislative priorities, medicaid expansion, affordable housing, tort reform, education, and taxes. Hong, a floor leader for Gov. Kemp, mentioned that school choice, sports betting, and medicaid expansion are expected to be significant topics in the upcoming session.

  • Stamp Shock: Navigating the Sixth Price Hike Since 2019

From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Monday, January 22nd, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Stamp Shock: Navigating the Sixth Price Hike Since 2019

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced yet another increase in the price of first-class "forever" stamps, marking the sixth rise since 2019. Starting from Sunday, the cost of these stamps will surge from 66 to 68 cents. This follows two increases in 2023, when the price of forever stamps rose from 60 to 63 cents in January, and then again to 66 cents in July.

Additionally, the prices for domestic postcard stamps will increase from 51 to 53 cents and international postcards will go from $1.50 to $1.55.

The USPS justified this increase by pointing to rising operating expenses due to inflation and the impacts of a previously flawed pricing model. They emphasized that changes to mail service costs are necessary to provide the Postal Service with much-needed revenue.

Despite these increases, the USPS maintains that its prices remain among the most affordable globally.

When adjusted for inflation, the price of postage in January 2019, which was 50 cents, equates to about 61 cents in spring 2023, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' CPI inflation calculator.

STORY 1: Duluth Man Heading To Federal Prison For Trying To Have Girlfriend Murdered

James Wan, a Duluth man, has been sentenced to over seven years in federal prison for attempting to hire a hitman on the dark web to murder his girlfriend in 2022. Wan pleaded guilty in October and was sentenced this week. The FBI intervened, protecting the girlfriend and arresting Wan when they discovered his arrangement. Wan used a dark web marketplace, paying $8,000 in Bitcoin for the hit. Despite attempting to conceal his intentions electronically, Wan's plot was foiled, and he admitted to the crime when questioned by the FBI. The sentencing underscores law enforcement's commitment to thwarting violent acts.

STORY 2: Woman claims doctors misdiagnosed brain tumor as perimenopause

Pippa Griffiths, 45, initially attributed migraines, brain fog, fatigue, and stress to perimenopause but later discovered a brain tumor was causing the symptoms. After waking up with facial numbness, an MRI scan revealed a meningioma. Pippa underwent surgery to remove the tumor, and though aware it may grow back, she opted against further treatment due to potential side effects. Pippa, now participating in a charity event for Brain Tumour Research, emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about brain tumors and hopes for kinder treatments and, ultimately, a cure.

STORY 3: Steve Knudsen, Karen Watkins Picked To Lead Gwinnett School Board

Steve Knudsen has been appointed as the Gwinnett County Board of Education's chairman for 2024, following his two-year tenure as vice chairman. The appointment was made through a 4-1 vote, with Tarece Johnson-Morgan opposing. Johnson-Morgan nominated Adrienne Simmons for the position, but the nomination lacked a second. Additionally, Karen Watkins was chosen as vice chairwoman in a 3-2 vote, with Morgan and Simmons voting against. The chairman and vice chairwoman play pivotal roles in leading school board meetings and assuming responsibilities in the absence of the other.

Bitzel's Chocolate in Suwanee, Gwinnett County, celebrated its grand opening by offering visitors a unique "Journey of Chocolate." Owner Ray Bitzel aims to provide an immersive experience, showcasing the entire chocolate-making process, from cacao harvesting and fermentation to sorting, molding, and packaging. The main attraction, "The Glass Chocolate Factory," guides guests through an artificial cacao forest, offering educational insights. The 7,000-square-foot facility also features a retail store offering a variety of chocolate products, including treats made from milk chocolate, dark chocolate, caramel chocolate, and the unique ruby chocolate. The space includes a "Chocolate Theater" for events and classes.

STORY 5: A New Way To Watch The Gwinnett Stripers

The Gwinnett Stripers announced the opening of the Coca-Cola Front Porch area for the 2024 season, marking the first significant renovation at Coolray Field in 15 years. This open-air deck, spanning 1,500 square feet, will be located behind home plate, accommodating up to 150 people. Larimer Design Architecture, known for projects at Truist Park and Petco Park, designed the Coca-Cola Front Porch. The renovation includes the development of a new Concourse Suite down the first base line, offering a more intimate experience. The area will feature eight four-top tables and 72 individual seats, providing fans with up-close views of the game. Food service will be available within the Front Porch area, creating a space for fans to eat and stay during the entire game. The opening game at Coolray Field is scheduled for April 2.

STORY 6: Opponents of sales tax on period products ready to push Georgia lawmakers to end levy

A group of advocates and Democrats in Georgia are urging the state to end the 4% sales tax on period products. The Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board, which works with member states to smooth out complexities in sales tax systems, adopted the term "menstrual discharge collection devices" to provide a uniform definition for tampons and other period products. Advocates argue that ending the discriminatory tax would not significantly impact state revenues and point to Georgia being one of the few states still taxing such products. Two bills from last year aim to eliminate the tax, but progress has been slow.

STORY 7: Gwinnett Teachers Will Get Their State-Funded Retention Supplements Later This Month

Gwinnett County Public Schools in Georgia will distribute $20.3 million to teachers and school support staff as part of a statewide effort to retain educators. The funds come from the state and will be provided as a $1,000 supplement to each of the district's 196,000 educators. The school board also decided to extend the supplements to other employees not covered by the state's guidance, including benefits-eligible district employees, part-time and full-time rehired retirees, and new hires. The additional cost for this extension is estimated at $5 million, and the supplements will be distributed with the employees' January 31 monthly paycheck.

STORY 8: Major airline fires back at analyst over bankruptcy claims

The airline industry, known for its challenges, faces uncertainties with potential bankruptcies. Warren Buffett's past skepticism resonates, as airlines like JetBlue and Spirit grapple with financial woes. Analysts, including TD Cowen's Helene Becker, express concerns about Spirit Airlines' survival, pointing to its debt and financial constraints. While Spirit denies pursuing Chapter 11, analysts suggest bankruptcy restructuring as a viable option. The airline's future hinges on debtholder cooperation, given its financial vulnerabilities. Fitch Ratings urges a clear liquidity plan. Despite potential disruptions, bankruptcy doesn't guarantee passenger abandonment. Spirit's decision to resist a merger with JetBlue adds complexity to its fate, impacting consumers and the airline industry. Spirit asserts ongoing efforts to fortify its balance sheet and operations.

"Corteo" explores the world of fun and comedy in the context of a clown imagining his own funeral, blending the ridiculous with the tragic. In a first for Cirque du Soleil, the stage will be centrally located in the arena, allowing each half of the audience to face the other, offering a unique perspective for both the show and performers.

STORY 7: Georgia Has the 8th Newest Homes in the U.S.

The U.S. real estate market poses challenges for buyers due to rising home prices, high mortgage rates, and a shortage of new housing supply. A study estimates a deficit of 2.3 to 6.5 million housing units in the U.S. Construction slowdown during the Great Recession contributes to the shortage. Buyers often compete for older homes, with the median age increasing by over 10 years in the last two decades. Older homes are more affordable but require higher maintenance costs. Geographic variations exist, with Sun Belt states having newer homes, while Northeast and Midwest states have older housing stocks. In Georgia, the median home age is 30 years, built primarily in 1992.
