  • Tips to Keep Homes Warm Amid Frigid Weather in Georgia

From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Thursday, January 18th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Tips to Keep Homes Warm Amid Frigid Weather in Georgia

As frigid temperatures grip Georgia, residents are urged to take proactive steps to ensure their homes remain warm and energy-efficient. Electric- and natural gas-powered heating systems play a crucial role in these conditions, prompting Georgia utilities to implement policies preventing service disconnections when temperatures plummet below 32 degrees, even for customers with outstanding bills. Here are some key recommendations from Georgia Power, Atlanta Gas Light, and Georgia's electric membership cooperatives (EMCs):

Lower your home thermostat to 68 degrees or below during extreme cold spells. This eases the strain on heating systems, reducing the risk of malfunctions.

For those experiencing financial hardship, there's a 24-hour amnesty period for customers behind on bills during sub-freezing temperatures, it's essential not to solely rely on it.

Examine your insulation to prevent heat loss. Inspect weather stripping around doors and windows for any gaps. Homeowners with attics are advised to explore the addition of more insulation to enhance heat retention.

Maintain electric furnace systems by changing air filters monthly and pleated filters every three months to sustain efficiency. Gas customers are advised to keep meters visible and regularly inspect for any signs of damage.

STORY 1: Woman Dies In Lawrenceville House Fire

A tragic house fire in Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County claimed the life of a woman on Saturday. Firefighters responded to the blaze at 100 Mae Belle Way after receiving a 911 call reporting the fire and a woman in a wheelchair inside. Despite firefighters' efforts, they discovered the woman deceased on the main level of the home. The victim's stepson informed them that his stepmother was bedridden and unable to escape independently. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

STORY 2: Former Wesleyan Pitcher is Going Bananas for Baseball Career in Savannah

Former Wesleyan pitcher Andy Archer, hailing from Peachtree Corners, has signed with the Savannah Bananas for their barnstorming 2024 season, known for their unique Banana Ball games. Archer, a Georgia Tech and University of Hawaii alum, earned a master’s degree in finance before pursuing a baseball career. Despite a recent shoulder surgery, he impressed the Bananas' coaching staff with a quirky audition, securing the last spot on the roster. Banana Ball, distinctive for its entertaining rules, offers a fresh and enjoyable baseball experience for fans. Archer anticipates a unique homecoming when the Bananas play in Lawrenceville on March 22-24.

STORY 3: Martin Luther King Jr. Parade Reminds Gwinnettians To Carry On Civil Rights Leader's Work

The United Ebony Society of Gwinnett County organized the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in downtown Lawrenceville, commemorating King's legacy and emphasizing the unfinished work for civil rights. Participants included marching bands, scout troops, churches, advocacy groups, and political figures. President Zachary Pratt urged Gwinnettians to carry forward King's message of love and equality. The theme, "It Starts With Me," emphasized individual responsibility. Gwinnett County Public Schools Superintendent Calvin Watts, the grand marshal, highlighted the journey toward equity, unity, and justice. Gwinnett County Sheriff Keybo Taylor noted persistent inequities, while Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson stressed "Kingian nonviolence." STORY 4: Study says air pollution can make people lazy

A study by the University of Leicester has found that long-term exposure to current levels of air pollution in the UK can lead to an additional 22 minutes per day of sedentary behavior. Sedentary behavior includes time spent lying, reclining, sitting, or standing still. The research involved 644 people at risk of type 2 diabetes who wore accelerometers around their waists for seven consecutive days. The study suggests that high levels of exposure to nitrogen dioxide were associated with increased sedentary time, emphasizing the need to reduce air pollution for public health benefits.

STORY 5: King’s granddaughter calls for goodwill among Georgians in celebration of civil rights icon

During the annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday at the state Capitol, Yolanda Renee King, the civil rights icon's granddaughter, delivered a message of inspiration for Georgians. She emphasized Georgia's role in setting an example for the country in fighting for justice and equality. King encouraged residents to honor King's legacy through community service during the holiday weekend. The event also acknowledged the recent death of Christine King Farris, King's eldest sibling and a civil rights leader, who received tribute in Georgia's Capitol Rotunda. The ceremony included awards named after individuals who worked closely with King during the Civil Rights Era.

    2. Education Department error could lower U.S. students' financial aid amounts
    3. Metro Atlanta will get up to 400 new electric vehicle charging ports

    Break 1: MOG

STORY 1: Elton John auctioning art from Atlanta home via Christie’s

Elton John is set to auction part of his extensive art collection from his recently sold Atlanta home. The auction, beginning on February 21 at Christie's, is expected to generate at least $10 million. John, who recently retired from performing, sold his Buckhead condo last fall for $7,225,000. The items for auction include a custom Damien Hirst, an 18th-century costume by Sandy Powell, and silver leather boots with E and J embossed. The decision to sell is emotional for John, who, along with husband David Furnish, is culling the collection. The auctions will be held both live and online, showcasing different aspects of John's life and collection. A public exhibition in New York City will precede the auctions from February 9 to 21, featuring a pop-up gift shop with John's merchandise.

STORY 2: Education Department error could lower U.S. students' financial aid amounts

An error by the U.S. Education Department in calculating financial aid could result in lower subsidies for students. The mistake involves not updating a key part of its aid calculation index for inflation, which has risen approximately 20% since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. This affects the amount of a family's income that is "protected" in the adjusted gross income calculation, which determines a student's financial aid need. Unless this is corrected, families may appear to have more resources than they do, leading to less financial aid for students. The issue was first reported in late 2021 and the department is currently determining how to address it.

STORY 3: Metro Atlanta will get up to 400 new electric vehicle charging ports

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) has received a $6.1 million federal grant to install 300 to 400 electric vehicle (EV) charging ports across 20 counties in metro Atlanta, particularly in areas where such infrastructure is currently limited. The move comes as part of efforts to prepare for the upcoming EV revolution and ensure equitable access to charging facilities. Charging at these new stations will be free. The grant is part of a wider $622.6 million fund allocated by the U.S. Department of Transportation under the bipartisan infrastructure law for nationwide charger installations. The first chargers under this program are expected to be operational in 12 to 18 months.

STORY 4: New Gwinnett facility aims to help sex trafficking victims

Georgia officials recently celebrated the opening of Grace's Place, a new facility in Gwinnett County designed to support sex trafficking victims. The 24-bed facility will house both male and female victims aged between 13 and 17, helping them transition back into society. First Lady Marty Kemp and the Grace Commission, which she leads, were present at the opening ceremony. The facility is part of a series of initiatives spearheaded by Marty Kemp to combat sex trafficking. This includes laws adopted in 2021 giving victims the power to sue traffickers and requiring more education on how to prevent the crime. Anyone with information about human trafficking can call the state hotline at 1-866-ENDHTGA1.

STORY 5: Estate of now-infamous Murdaugh family goes up for action

The South Carolina estate of the notorious Murdaugh family, known as the Moselle Estate, is going up for auction with a minimum bid of $1.1 million. Alex Murdaugh, the former resident, was convicted of murdering his wife and son in 2021 and is currently appealing his sentence. The property has changed hands several times since the crime. Proceeds from the initial sale went toward legal fees, the surviving son, a local bank, and victims of a 2019 boat crash linked to the family. The estate, which features a mix of classic charm and modern amenities, includes a 5,300-square-foot home on 21 acres. The auction will take place on February 15.

STORY 6: This half-eaten sandwich is up for sale for $1.3M on Facebook

On Facebook Marketplace, a half-eaten sandwich is making waves with a staggering $1.3 million price tag. Listed as "new" by a cheeky seller from Leicester, England, the grilled sandwich, described as "very crispy," is up for sale because the vendor couldn't finish it. This quirky listing follows a trend of bizarre food items being sold on the platform, such as a man offering "the saddest lunch ever" – a baked potato drowning in baked beans, eaten off a glass microwave plate. The eccentricity of these listings has sparked amusement and commentary on social media.

STORY 7: Michigan coronation is most-watched title game in four years

The Michigan-Washington College Football Playoff National Championship game marked a four-year high in ratings and viewership. Averaging a 12.3 rating and 25.05 million viewers across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN Deportes, the game saw a 41% increase in ratings and a 45% increase in viewership compared to the previous year. Michigan's victory delivered the second-largest audience of the college football season and ranked fourth in viewership among all non-NFL sportscasts since 2018. The full College Football Playoff averaged 23.6 million viewers, up 15% from the previous year, and marked the highest average since the 2017-18 season. The entire 43-game bowl season averaged a 2.3 rating and 4.48 million viewers, showcasing a 5% increase in viewership over the previous year.

  • Sky High Concerns: Georgia Airports Battling Soaring Numbers of Intercepted Loaded Firearms

From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Monday, January 15th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Sky High Concerns: Georgia Airports Battling Soaring Numbers of Intercepted Loaded Firearms

In 2023, there has been a notable surge in the interception of firearms at Georgia's federally regulated airports, particularly at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) revealed that a staggering 93% of the firearms intercepted at airports nationwide were found to be loaded.

This increase in intercepted firearms correlates with a rise in the overall number of passengers. The TSA highlighted that in Georgia, the rate of firearms detection exceeded twice the national average. To provide a specific insight, one firearm was discovered for every 61,646 passengers screened in the state. This concerning trend underscores the need for heightened awareness and security measures at Georgia's airports.

STORY 1: Gwinnett's Gas South Arena Earns National Recognition

Gas South Arena, marking its 20th anniversary, received national recognition by ranking No. 23 among venues with a 10,001 to 15,000 capacity. In 2023, the arena had its highest-grossing year, with nearly 700,000 attendees at 117 public events. Highlights included hosting the SEC gymnastics championships, two sold-out Zach Bryan shows, the first e-gaming event "Blast Rainbow," and celebrating 20 years as the home of the Atlanta Gladiators. The arena is set to host the Atlanta Vibe professional volleyball team, continue with the Atlanta Gladiators, and feature events like Bulls, Bands and Barrels and the Jurassic World Live Tour in 2024.

STORY 2: Georgia teachers would get $2,500 raise under Gov. Brian Kemp's proposed FY2025 budget

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has proposed a 4% cost of living adjustment for state employees and a $2,500 salary increase for K-12 teachers and certified employees in the 2024-2025 school year. The governor aims to attract and retain employees in vital roles through this pay increase. Kemp's budget proposal also includes updating the pupil transportation funding formula, allocating nearly $205 million for this purpose. Additionally, he has earmarked $104 million to establish an annual school security grant program to address security needs in schools. The Professional Association of Georgia Educators praised the salary increase and transportation funding but expressed opposition to school voucher proposals.

STORY 3: Gwinnett Commissioners On the Road to Transit Referendum. Here's What We Know

Gwinnett County commissioners are taking steps toward a referendum on the county's transit system in November. A vote is planned for May to officially call for the referendum on the November ballot. If approved, the referendum would ask voters whether a 1% special sales tax should fund transit expansion, replacing property taxes with sales tax revenues. The new transit plan focuses on buses, microtransit, and bus rapid transit, excluding rail expansion. The plan includes an "Airport Ride" bus service to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The vote follows two previous rejections of transit expansion referendums in the last five years.

STORY 4: Gwinnett Chairwoman, Peachtree Corners Mayor taking on ARC leadership roles

Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson and Peachtree Corners Mayor Mike Mason have assumed key roles in the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC). Hendrickson will serve as the board's treasurer and chairwoman of the Budget and Audit Review Subcommittee. Mason has been appointed as a co-chairman of the Advisory Committee on Aging. The ARC board, representing 11 counties, focuses on regional issues and priorities. Under the leadership of Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, the ARC aims to address federal infrastructure efforts, enhance emergency preparedness funding, and tackle ambulance response time disparities in the metro area, with a focus on the south metro region.

STORY 5: Kemp endorses school vouchers push

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp urged lawmakers to pass a private school vouchers bill during his State of the State address. The bill aims to provide $6,000 scholarships for students in low-performing schools to attend private schools. The Senate passed a similar bill last year, but it faced opposition in the House. Critics argue that vouchers divert tax dollars from public schools, with concerns raised by Democrats and rural Republicans. Governor Kemp emphasized the need for an inclusive approach to education, acknowledging public, private, homeschooling, charter, and other alternatives. The push for private school vouchers aligns with Kemp's broader education and spending proposals.

A survey of 2,000 U.S. adults revealed that Americans have lost 26 hours with loved ones, missed eight social events, and canceled nine dates due to not feeling their best over the past year. The average American feels their best only about 15 days each month. The top three reasons for feeling unwell are lack of sleep (43%), stress (43%), and illness (22%). Employed respondents estimate missing four days of work and spending four full days in bed due to sickness in the past year. Concerns about missing experiences with loved ones outweigh worries about work for 46% of respondents.

STORY 1: Gwinnett commissioners will vote on 'intent' to call for transit referendum

Gwinnett County commissioners are taking steps towards a November referendum that could decide the fate of the county's transit system. The required meeting with city leaders was held last Tuesday, and a key vote is scheduled for this Tuesday to begin the formal process of calling for a referendum. The vote will determine whether to hold another vote in spring to officially call for the referendum in November. If approved, Gwinnett voters would decide whether to implement a 1% special sales tax for transit expansion. The proposed plan focuses on buses, microtransit, and bus rapid transit, excluding rail expansion. The new transit plan aims to address previous concerns and has garnered support from city officials.

STORY 2: Inflation causing 6 in 10 millennials to treat themselves at home more

Based on recent findings, it appears that a significant number of millennials are opting for special nights in with self-pampering rather than dining out. This trend seems to be driven by the rising cost of living and inflation, with 63% of millennials attributing their preference to these economic factors. Despite these challenges, they are willing to spend approximately $160 on a special meal at home for two, indulging in items like seafood, stuffed olives, and chocolates. The study also noted a growing interest in experiential eating at home, such as creating wood-fired pizzas and assembling charcuterie boards. Interestingly, the survey revealed that millennials are three times more likely to treat their partner to a special meal at home than themselves. As for cheese-related preferences, the study indicated several misconceptions among respondents, although the specifics were not detailed.

STORY 3: Great Chemistry: Mill Creek Grad Making Her Mark at Kennesaw State University

Ra’Nya Malone, a biochemistry major at Kennesaw State University, credits a high school English essay assignment, a love for science, and her aunt's influence for her academic journey. Her essay led her to interview her aunt's classmate, Dr. Carl Saint-Louis, KSU’s assistant professor of chemistry. Joining Saint-Louis' lab, Malone co-authored a published paper and participated in a National Science Foundation-sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates. She presented her research at KSU’s Symposium of Student Scholars and impressed scientists at conferences, securing two summer REU opportunities. Malone envisions a future in pharmaceuticals, driven by her passion for the positive impact of chemistry on the world.

STORY 4: Americans take this long to give up on their health resolutions

A survey of 2,000 Americans who work out at least once a week revealed that the average active American would abandon their health-related resolutions about seven weeks into the new year. Of those surveyed, 29% confessed they would last less than a month on their resolutions. The research found that definitions of "unhealthy" foods varied, with 1 in 6 mistakenly believing all high-calorie foods are unhealthy. Some respondents associate healthy eating with avoiding carbs (24%) or sacrificing taste (18%). The study, conducted by OnePoll for egglife, highlights the diverse perspectives on health and nutrition and the challenges individuals face in making lifestyle changes.

STORY 5: Will this be the year Georgia Republicans soften decade-long refusal of full Medicaid Expansion?

Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns has indicated openness to exploring a "private option" for Medicaid expansion, a shift from the state's decade-long rejection of full expansion under the Affordable Care Act. Burns mentioned the possibility of expanding access to health care through a private option for lower-income working families, emphasizing a fiscally responsible approach to lower premiums. Georgia is one of 10 states that have not fully expanded Medicaid, and discussions around a potential private option represent a significant departure from previous Republican positions. Any proposal would likely involve changes to the state's certificate-of-need program.

STORY 6: Advocates concerned about proposed change to Coastal Georgia marsh protections

Coastal Georgia regulators are considering changes to a rule designed to protect the state's marshes, a crucial buffer against storms and rising sea levels. The proposed change focuses on a 50-foot buffer measured from the "upland component" of a project with a Coastal Marshlands Protection Act (CMPA) permit. The amendment aims to exempt small projects from the upland component buffer requirement to address concerns about the burden on homeowners. Critics argue for a broader review, emphasizing the potential impact of bulkheads on the marsh and the need to reconsider development close to the marsh. Public comments on the proposal are accepted until January 19.

STORY 7: Northeast Georgia Health System receives national recognition for simulation center

The Northeast Georgia Health System's simulation center has received accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, recognizing its commitment to providing a safe environment for healthcare professionals to practice skills in a simulated clinical setting. The accreditation ensures improved patient outcomes, reduced costs, and positions NGHS as a trusted institution for healthcare education. The Becker's Hospital Review also named NGHS among 34 hospitals and health systems with outstanding simulation and education programs, acknowledging its partnerships with high schools, colleges, EMS, and law enforcement agencies to train various healthcare professionals and students.

STORY 1: Atlanta Falcons Fire Head Coach Arthur Smith

The Atlanta Falcons have fired head coach Arthur Smith following a 48-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints, concluding their 2023 season. Smith, who took over the position in 2021, led the team for three seasons, finishing with a 21-30 overall record. Falcons owner Arthur Blank expressed respect for Smith's contributions to team culture but stated that on-field results fell short of expectations. The search for a new head coach will commence immediately, led by Blank, CEO Rich McKay, and general manager Terry Fontenot, with no set timetable for the hiring decision.

STORY 2: What Is Cyclocross? This Gwinnett Teen Is Among The Nation's Best

Matthew Crabbe, a 14-year-old Buford High freshman, has clinched his third consecutive USA Cycling Cyclocross national title. The cyclocross season typically runs from September to December, and Crabbe's achievements in the sport involve navigating grass fields with elevation changes and various surfaces like mud and sand. Despite its technical nature, Crabbe appreciates the supportive and encouraging community in cyclocross racing. During the offseason, he engages in traditional road races. Crabbe, who broke his wrist in a spring criterium, finds cyclocross less dangerous than road races and values the combination of technical skills and physical strength required in the sport.

STORY 3: Legislation to be Filed to Create City of Mulberry in Eastern Gwinnett

Georgia House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration and state Sen. Clint Dixon released proposed legislation for the creation of a new city in Gwinnett County, to be named Mulberry. The cityhood bill, set for filing, aims to address local control over planning and zoning. The proposed city, Gwinnett's second-largest if approved, would be located near Little Mulberry Park, have around 41,000 residents, and offer services such as planning and zoning, stormwater management, and code enforcement. The feasibility study indicates Mulberry's financial viability without a city property tax, relying on various fees and projecting a surplus. The city would be governed by a five-member council.

STORY 4: Study debunks eating disorder myths

A new study challenges the myth that only "posh skinny white girls" develop eating disorders, emphasizing that everyone, irrespective of race, gender, or age, can be affected. Eating disorder experts stress the harmful impact of stereotypes and urge clinicians to treat all eating disorders seriously, even those not involving weight loss, such as purging. The guide "Eating Disorders: The Basics" aims to dispel myths, covering risk factors, types of disorders, latest treatments, and offering advice for families. The authors emphasize the need for recognition and support for various affected groups, including men, racial minorities, transgender individuals, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

STORY 5: Is it harder to commit to a fitness routine than a partner?

A survey of 2,000 Americans who work out at least once a week reveals that one in five find it harder to commit to a fitness routine than to a partner. Over the last decade, respondents tried about five different workout regimens and had four different serious partners. More than two-thirds (68%) are likely to stick with a workout routine simply because it's comfortable, mirroring the tendency to stay in the wrong relationship for the same reason (53%). The survey explores the concept of a "perfect match," with 66% defining it as something or someone helping them reach their goals, and 35% believing working out with a partner would help achieve fitness goals.

STORY 1: PCOM Georgia and Gwinnett County Public Schools work together to help STEM students

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) and PCOM Georgia collaborate on STEM opportunities for Gwinnett students. The partnership began in 2004 when GCPS purchased a facility near PCOM Georgia. The college sponsors the Gwinnett Science, Engineering + Innovation Fair, with faculty and staff serving on the advisory board. PCOM Georgia participates in events like Principal for a Day and the STAR Student luncheon, enhancing community engagement. The college offers career fairs and programs like Opportunities Academy, Summer STEM Saturdays, and Future Healthcare Scholars to introduce high school students to healthcare professions. The collaboration extends to faculty involvement, capstone projects, and admissions outreach.

STORY 2: Helping Hand: Gwinnett Woman Forms Nonprofit To Support Cancer Patients

Bobbie Menneg, a breast cancer survivor of 12 years, founded Beyond the Ribbon to provide support, encouragement, and hope to cancer patients. The Lawrenceville-based nonprofit offers assistance through various programs, including Jane's Closet (a food pantry), Pat's Pillows & Pouches (providing pillows, drain pouches, and seat belt cushions), and Chloe & Friends (supporting family pets). During Christmas, Beyond the Ribbon adopts families, fulfilling wish lists and distributing grocery store gift cards. Menneg organizes creative fundraising events, including golf tournaments, 5K races, car shows, and recent events like "Rainbows, Reindeers & Wishes" and "Bingo & Beyond." The nonprofit aims to bring joy to cancer families during challenging times.

STORY 3: Good problem for General Assembly: What to do with surplus?

The 2024 session of the Georgia General Assembly, starting with a $16 billion budget surplus, is expected to address various long-debated issues. The state's surplus and $11 billion undesignated funds will be a focal point of discussions, determining spending priorities. Governor Brian Kemp proposed accelerating the state income tax cut and additional spending, including one-time pay supplements for state employees and teachers. Legislative Republicans are likely to push for private school vouchers, while tort reform and legalized gambling, particularly sports betting, are also on the agenda. Transportation funding and potential Medicaid expansion discussions are expected during the session.

STORY 4: UGA retention, completion rates remain strong

The University of Georgia (UGA) achieved a nearly 95% first-year retention rate for first-time freshmen, showcasing the success of efforts to enhance the academic environment and support students. The university's six-year completion rate maintained a record high of 88%, and the four-year completion rate indicated that almost three-quarters of UGA students graduate within four years. UGA's retention and completion rates continue to surpass those of its peer institutions, reflecting a decade-long commitment to initiatives such as the Active Learning Initiative, faculty hiring programs, academic advisor expansion, tutoring, mentorship, and peer-learning programs. The university's focus on data-driven student success strategies contributes to its ongoing improvement.

STORY 5: Georgia lawmakers to again consider Okefenokee mining ban

Georgia lawmakers are preparing to address the contentious issue of a proposed mine near the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge as the legislative session begins. Twin Pines, an Alabama-based company, aims to mine minerals, including titanium dioxide, near the Okefenokee, raising concerns about potential environmental harm. House Bill 71, currently before the legislature, seeks to protect the Okefenokee by prohibiting new mining permits within the area. Although the bill did not progress last year, supporters are optimistic about its chances this time. Opponents are also exploring other avenues, including pressuring companies not to purchase products from a mine near the refuge.

STORY 6: New robotic device improves walking for Parkinson’s patients

Scientists from Harvard and Boston University have developed a wearable robotic device to help people with Parkinson's disease walk without "freezing" or stumbling. The device is a robotic garment worn around the hips and thighs, providing a gentle push to the hips as the legs swing, allowing wearers to achieve a longer stride and walk faster and further. In trials, the garment eliminated freezing episodes in participants with Parkinson's. The technology offers a potential solution to one of the major contributors to falls in people with Parkinson's, as existing treatments are not highly effective.

STORY 7: Psychedelic plant successfully treats war vets’ traumatic brain injuries: study

A study by researchers at Stanford University explored the potential of ibogaine, a naturally occurring compound found in the roots of the African shrub iboga, to alleviate symptoms of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in war veterans. Ibogaine, a psychedelic plant, was found to significantly improve functioning, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety in veterans with TBIs. The research team worked with 30 special-ops veterans with a history of TBIs, and the results indicated immediate and lasting improvements in various areas. However, the use of ibogaine is restricted in the United States due to its classification as a Schedule I-controlled substance.
