STORY 6: Ossoff-sponsored bill supporting military spouses becomes law

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff's bipartisan Military Spouse Career Support Act of 2023 has become law. The bill aims to aid military spouses' careers by extending reimbursement for licensure and business costs to spouses of servicemembers transitioning to the reserve component. Current policies only provide reimbursements for relocations between active-duty assignments, not when moving between active and reserve assignments. The legislation intends to alleviate the financial burden military families, especially spouses, face during relocations. Ossoff's previous bipartisan effort, the Military Spouse Licensing Relief Act, was enacted last year to enhance job flexibility for military spouses by ensuring recognition of professional licenses across states.

  • NFL Showdown: The Final Week Frenzy - Playoff Scenarios and the Race for NFC South Title

From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Saturday, January 6th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

NFL Week 18 TV Schedule & Playoff Picture

The final week of the NFL regular season kickoffs today, with key games set to determine playoff standings. Today, the Pittsburgh Steelers play the top-seeded AFC team, the Baltimore Ravens at 4:30. The Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts kick off at 8:15 as well.

Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons face off against the New Orleans Saints at 1pm in New Orleans. The Falcons' playoff hopes are straightforward but hinge on two critical outcomes: a victory against the Saints and a win by the Panthers over the Buccaneers. Currently, the Falcons, at 7-9, rank third in the NFC South. If both games go their way, all teams would end up with an 8-9 record, but Atlanta would hold the tiebreaker due to their superior record against the other two teams.

The regular season concludes with Sunday Night Football between the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. The victor wins the AFC East title.

STORY 1: Two Teens — One Still At Large — Charged In June Shooting Death At Gwinnett County Park

Two teenagers, Anwar Brenard Singleton and Prince James, have been charged with murder in the shooting death of 19-year-old Brian Arnold-Causey in June. Arnold-Causey was shot at Lenora Park and later dropped off at a Gwinnett County fire station, where he succumbed to his injuries. Anwar Brenard Singleton, 18, has been charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during certain felonies. He was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail on October 28, 2023. Prince James, 19, also faces the same charges, and his whereabouts are currently unknown. Police are seeking information on James' location.

STORY 2: Lanier Grad Derrick Brown Nears NFL DT Tackles Record

Derrick Brown, a former Lanier star and defensive lineman for the Carolina Panthers, is on the verge of setting an NFL record for tackles in a season by a defensive tackle. Brown, who tied a Panthers record with 67 tackles last season, is two tackles away from surpassing the record of 96 stops set by the Miami Dolphins' Christian Wilkins in 2022. Despite the Panthers' challenging season with a 2-14 record, Brown has been a standout player, being the NFC's first alternate at defensive tackle for the Pro Bowl. Brown, 25, is in his fourth NFL season out of Auburn.

STORY 3: Gwinnett Chef Plans 'Major Pivot' to Feed the Hungry

Chef Hank Reid, through his mobile food distribution organization Lettum Eat, has provided over 150,000 nourishing meals to the food-insufficient in Gwinnett County. In 2024, Reid plans to pivot by purchasing three modular classroom trailers from the Gwinnett County School District. These trailers, called Modular Production Kitchens (MPKs), will be strategically placed in food desert areas in partnership with churches to streamline the meal outreach process. Reid is seeking funding to complete the prototype MPK, and the entire three-trailer project is expected to cost at least $200,000 each. Lettum Eat has been serving the community since 2019, providing fresh meals through food truck feeding tours and distributing prepackaged frozen meals.

STORY 4: Gwinnett will Spend $2.5 Billion to Operate County Government

Gwinnett County commissioners voted 4-1 to approve the $2.5 billion 2024 budget, which includes the $1.97 billion operating budget and the $561 million capital budget. The budget introduces 104 new positions across various departments, expands microtransit into Suwanee, Sugar Hill, and Buford, offers a 4% pay-for-performance raise for county employees, and addresses affordable housing needs. The county allocates $25.3 million for elections, adds two affordable housing coordinator positions, and utilizes $18 million in federal funding to incentivize affordable housing development. Other additions include a new med unit in Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services, expansion of the Gwinnett Trails program, and improvements in mental health care.

STORY 5: State Rep. Greg Kennard will not seek re-election after redistricting put him in the same district as Sam Park

Two Georgia House Democrats, Rep. Gregg Kennard and Rep. Doug Stoner, will not seek reelection in 2024 after being drawn into districts with fellow Democrats during the recent redistricting special session. The new House map approved by Republican majorities paired Kennard with House Minority Whip Sam Park in Gwinnett County, and Stoner with Rep. Teri Anulewicz in Cobb County. Kennard cited his unwillingness to force voters to choose between him and Park as a reason for stepping down. The redistricting special session aimed to address a ruling declaring the 2021 legislative and congressional maps violated the Voting Rights Act.

The extension agents work with the Georgia Department of Agriculture to collect agricultural economic damage data and assist farmers in navigating relief programs after disaster events. The program also addresses farm and rural stress initiatives.

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) Georgia collaborate to provide STEM opportunities for Gwinnett students. STORY 1: Grayson Man Accused of Defrauding Liberty Mutual of more than $9.2 million

Jose Martinez of Grayson, Georgia, has been arrested on charges of insurance fraud for allegedly defrauding Liberty Mutual Insurance Company of over $9 million. Martinez submitted a self-audit form in 2016, containing false information about his company's profits and employee pay. The fraudulent activity aimed to conceal his company's true worker's compensation liabilities, resulting in significantly reduced insurance premiums. Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King emphasized that Martinez's actions defrauded Liberty Mutual of more than $9,250,000 in premiums that should have been paid for coverage liabilities. Martinez was taken into custody on December 5.

STORY 2: Pair charged with trafficking 17-year-old, 15-year-old victims

Denorris Hutchinson and Natasha Bridges have been indicted on charges of trafficking persons for sexual servitude in Fulton County, Georgia. The case originated from "Operation Not Forgotten," where a 17-year-old victim was recovered from a hotel in Fulton County. Both defendants are accused of trafficking the underage female. Subsequent investigations led to the identification of a second underage victim, a 15-year-old female, allegedly trafficked by Hutchinson. The Attorney General's Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit presented evidence to a Fulton County Grand Jury, resulting in the indictment of Hutchinson and Bridges. The charges include trafficking of persons for sexual servitude.

STORY 4: UGA study: High school counselors lack training in addictive behaviors

A study by the University of Georgia reveals that most high school counselors lack formalized training in addressing addictive behaviors such as vaping and internet gaming. Despite being aware of the issues, counselors reported insufficient training, with only 24.4% feeling moderately competent addressing gaming-related issues and 37.1% for vaping-related issues. The study emphasizes the need for comprehensive training programs for school counselors, infused into the curriculum or presented as a mandatory standalone course, to equip them in recognizing and responding to addictive behaviors in students. The prevalence of vaping and gaming addiction underscores the importance of implementing preventative and early intervention measures in schools.

      STORY 1:

Medicare Advantage plans continue to draw in elderly enrollees by offering appealing incentives such as grocery cards and even golf lessons. Supporters of these incentives argue that they foster healthier lifestyles, whereas critics express concerns that they may serve as a facade for less-than-stellar coverage. These incentives have become a significant factor in the promotion of these plans. Despite the conclusion of the open enrollment period, beneficiaries have another opportunity from January 1st to March 31st to switch their plans. This discussion delves into the intricate web of insurance options available to seniors, cautioning them to stay focused on the essential aspects of their plans amidst the allure of these perks. It also tackles the issue of measuring the effectiveness of these incentives in enhancing health outcomes, a task which presents its own set of challenges. In 2023, more than half (51%) of eligible Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans, according to Kaiser Family Foundation. Furthermore, nearly a quarter of these plans offer financial assistance for food and produce, as reported by Axios.

      STORY 2:

The air travel industry is facing a new challenge that's affecting even those who've paid for convenience. Travelers who've subscribed to Clear, an annual $189 private program designed to expedite airport security checks via biometric identity verification, are finding themselves in line behind members of the less expensive TSA Precheck program, which costs $78 for five years. A surge in enrollment for both programs, combined with the introduction of more time-consuming 3-D luggage scanning machines and overall staffing shortages at airports, has resulted in longer wait times. Unfortunately, this means that Clear, despite its advanced technology, can sometimes be slower than TSA Precheck. Travelers are now left navigating a complex choice about which security line to choose, making their airport experience less streamlined than they'd hoped. This latest challenge highlights the ongoing issues in the aviation industry as it grapples with adapting to new technologies, increasing passenger numbers, and managing operational logistics.

      STORY 3:

In Georgia, even if a red light is taking too long to turn green, drivers must not run it. Disobeying this rule is considered a misdemeanor and can result in a fine. A maximum $70 fine applies if caught on camera, but fines can increase to $158 if pulled over without previous points on the license. Repeated violations can lead to a $1,000 fine and three points added to the license. If a traffic light is malfunctioning, it should be treated as a flashing red or yellow light, and drivers should proceed safely. A completely broken traffic light should be treated as a four-way stop. Drivers are advised to report malfunctioning lights to the city or the police department's non-emergency line.

      STORY 4: Senior Facilities

A significant change is looming over Georgia's assisted living and personal care homes. State officials are contemplating a rollback of staffing requirements, a move which has sparked apprehension among advocates for the elderly who worry about potential safety compromises.

This comes after Rep. Sharon Cooper addressed neglect and abuse issues in 2020, leading to an increase in staffing levels. Yet, the Georgia Senior Living Association is now advocating for a relaxation of these requirements. The proposed changes include a reduction in staff numbers in memory care units, a move that critics argue could negatively affect the quality of care provided.

The public comment period on this critical issue remains open until today, with a virtual meeting held on December 11th to further discuss the matter. It's a pivotal time for the senior care sector in Georgia, as these decisions could significantly impact the lives of those residing in these facilities.

      STORY 5: Streaming price increases

Major alterations are on the horizon for Amazon Prime Video, starting January 29th. Brace yourself for the introduction of commercials during your beloved TV shows and films as Amazon Prime Video follows in the footsteps of other streaming platforms by offering different subscription levels. Prime members will have the option to select an ad-free tier priced at $2.99 per month in the U.S., ensuring a seamless streaming experience. This move comes as Disney recently increased their ad-free Disney+ subscription rate to $13.99/month, while Netflix's ad-free plan stands at $15.49/month. However, Amazon reassures us that there will be no amendments to the Prime membership cost in the upcoming year.

      • Metro Atlanta posts strong job growth in November

From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Monday, January 1st, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Metro Atlanta posts strong job growth in November

In a notable development, the jobless rate in metro Atlanta dipped to 4.2% in November, compared to 4.3% the previous month. The data, provided by the State Department of Labor, indicates a solid job market, especially in the retail and hospitality sectors, reflecting a boost in shopping, dining, and entertainment activities.

This year, Atlanta's economic resilience has been conspicuous, attracting talent from across the state and contributing to the majority of new jobs in Georgia. The growth in the job market exceeded expectations, contradicting earlier predictions of an economic downturn. However, certain companies, including FAB Precision Sheetmetal and Truist Bank, have announced layoffs and branch closures, underscoring challenges within specific sectors.

Despite these variations, Atlanta's job base grew by 2.47% over the past year, outpacing both the state and national growth rates. With an unemployment rate of 4.2%, the city continues to demonstrate its economic vitality. Stay tuned for further updates on metro Atlanta's dynamic job market.

From the Henssler Financial Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast.

Today is Sunday, December 31st, and Happy heavenly Birthday to singer Donna Summer.

        ***12.31.23 - BIRTHDAY - DONNA SUMMER***

I’m Keith Ippolito and here are your top stories presented by Kia Mall of Georgia.

        1. Explore Gwinnett Celebrates Top Hospitality Leaders at Annual Awards Reception
        2. Significant Representation Changes in Gwinnett Following Judicial Approval of New Congressional and Legislative Maps
        3. Judge Upholds Redistricting Maps: McBath to Contest for Her Previous Seat in the 6th Congressional District
        4. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe!

          Break 1: MOG

STORY 1: Explore Gwinnett Recognizes Hospitality Partners at Annual Hospitality Awards Reception

Explore Gwinnett recently hosted its annual hospitality awards event, recognizing distinguished leaders in the hospitality industry. Attended by over 150 industry professionals, the event also served as a donation drive, collecting over 4,500 items for the Michael Steven Powell Legacy Fund. The award recipients included Shannon Butler, Wendi Lucas, David Sukala, Kevin Priger, and Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation, honored in various categories. The hospitality community's strong community stewardship was highlighted, contributing to Explore Gwinnett's annual charity drive. The collected items will benefit the Michael Steven Powell Legacy Fund, supporting local charities in Gwinnett County.

STORY 2: Gwinnett will see major representation shakeups after judge upholds new congressional, legislative maps

A federal judge upheld the redrawn district maps for Gwinnett County, splitting it between four congressional districts and adding an extra seat to the county's state House delegation. The new maps were created during a special session after the previous ones were found to violate the Voting Rights Act. The changes include the dismantling of coalition districts, affecting Gwinnett's representation. Notably, state Reps. Sam Park and Gregg Kennard are now in the same district, and the District 105 seat, represented by Democrat Farooq Mughal, becomes more Republican-friendly. Critics, including Democrats, argue that the new maps preserve Republican majority, but the judge deemed them legal.

STORY 3: McBath will run for her old 6th Congressional District seat after judge upholds redistricting maps

U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath will no longer represent part of Gwinnett County after a federal judge upheld the recent redrawn congressional and state legislative maps. McBath, who moved to the Gwinnett-centric 7th congressional district after the 6th district was redrawn in 2021 to favor Republicans, announced she will run for her old 6th district seat in 2024. The judge ruled that the redrawn maps met the standards set and ordered by him, addressing concerns about the dilution of Black voters' strength. Gwinnett County is now split between four congressional districts, impacting the representation and political landscape in the region.

Break 2: PEGGY SLAPPY – TOM WAGES – DTL

STORY 4: Dacula High School grad serving aboard USNS Mercy hospital ship

Ensign Terry Draper from Dacula is serving on the hospital ship USNS Mercy for Pacific Partnership 2024, a multinational humanitarian and disaster relief mission in the Indo-Pacific. Draper, a Navy veteran of 14 years, serves as the security officer responsible for antiterrorism and force protection. The mission focuses on disaster response preparedness and capacity-building while enhancing partnerships with participating nations. The USNS Mercy will visit the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, Palau, and the Federated States of Micronesia, conducting civic-action projects, medical symposiums, and disaster response training activities.

STORY 5: Osprey crashes could endanger funding for new tilt-rotor Army aircraft Bell is developing

Fort Worth-based Bell Textron, contracted to develop the Army's next long-range assault aircraft, faces potential challenges due to recent fatal crashes of its V-22 Osprey. The V-280 Valor, Bell's tilt-rotor design, was chosen by the Army to replace the UH-60 Black Hawk. Concerns about safety and the award process have been raised, especially after a Nov. 29 Osprey crash. Despite opposition, Bell's contract stands, and the company continues progress, including new facilities. Congressional concerns and the Osprey's safety history may impact the Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft program, but experts suggest the investigation's results will guide decisions.

          Break 3:  ESOG – INGLES 5 – JACKSON EMC

STORY 6: Health Alert: Cardio or Weights First? Doctor Explains

Combining cardio and resistance training in one session is beneficial for overall health, reducing cardiovascular and metabolic risks. Research indicates that the order of aerobic and resistance exercises doesn't significantly impact fitness improvements. While consistency is crucial, personal preferences can guide the order of exercises. Concurrent training, involving both forms of exercise, yields generalized benefits in aerobic capacity and muscular strength. This approach is particularly advantageous for individuals with chronic disease risk factors. With 38.4 million Americans having diabetes and nearly 70% being overweight or obese, blending exercises contributes to improved health outcomes.

STORY 7: Health Alert: ADHD Meds in Childhood Do Not Increase Future Drug Use Risk. Doctor Explains

Children treated with prescription stimulants for ADHD do not face a higher risk of substance use disorder (SUD) later in life, according to a study involving rigorous diagnosis and long-term assessment until an average age of 25. This finding dispels concerns about ADHD medication's long-term effects. Recognizing nontraditional ADHD symptoms, such as sleep issues and irritability, is crucial. The study, involving 579 children, analyzed the relationship between stimulant medication and later substance use, finding no evidence of a connection. This research provides reassurance to parents and patients, fostering better-informed discussions about managing ADHD in children.

We’ll have final thoughts after this.
