STORY 1: Red Cross In Need Of Blood Donations

During December, the American Red Cross encourages blood and platelet donations to meet the demand during the busy holiday season. Donor availability is impacted, making it crucial to collect enough blood and platelets for hospital needs. Donors giving blood, platelets, or AB Elite plasma until Jan. 5 will receive an exclusive Red Cross long-sleeved T-shirt, and those donating from Jan. 1 to Jan. 31 will be entered for a chance to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LVII in Las Vegas. Scheduling appointments can be done through the Red Cross Blood Donor App or at www.RedCrossBlood.org.

STORY 2: Gwinnett School Board Member Mary Kay Murphy Makes It Official: She Will Not Seek Re-election

Mary Kay Murphy, a member of the Gwinnett County Board of Education for nearly three decades, has announced her retirement, confirming she won't seek re-election in 2024. Murphy, in her seventh term, believes the school system needs new voices and views. She has been a strong advocate for safe schools, fiscal responsibility, parental engagement, and quality educators. The decision opens up her District 3 seat, with several candidates already vying for the position in the upcoming nonpartisan elections. Murphy has yet to decide whether she will endorse any of the candidates.

STORY 3: PDI Lawrenceville and Georgia State Patrol collect Toys for Tots

Plumbing Distributors Inc. (PDI), a family-owned business, donated hundreds of toys to the Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots initiative. PDI, established in 1973, has actively participated in this charitable effort for the last seven years, involving employees, customers, friends, and family members across its 19 branches and 14 showrooms. Toys for Tots, a program founded by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in 1947, aims to collect and distribute holiday gifts to less fortunate children. PDI's philanthropic efforts were recently recognized with the 2023 Giving Back Award as part of the Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, Piping Spirit of Independence Awards.

STORY 4: REVIEW: 'The Color Purple' a tale of feminine strength, perseverance and solidarity

Blitz Bazawule's new movie adaptation of "The Color Purple," based on Alice Walker's novel, delivers a powerful and energetic portrayal of female strength, solidarity, and perseverance. The film, set on the Georgia coast in the early 20th century, follows Celie's journey from abuse to finding inspiration and empowerment through her relationships with two strong women, Sofia and Shug Avery. With modern sensibilities and Broadway-style song-and-dance numbers, the film captures the emotional essence of the story. The cast, led by Danielle Brooks, Fantasia Barrino, and Taraji P. Henson, delivers breathtaking performances, making this rendition of "The Color Purple" a compelling and emotional experience.

STORY 5: Ossoff's efforts help Georgia farmers sell more pecans

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff has successfully influenced U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to start collecting assessments on imported pecans, a move aimed at supporting Georgia farmers and boosting sales of American pecans. The collected assessments fund the American Pecan Promotion Board, which works to level the playing field for domestic pecan producers. Ossoff had urged CBP to initiate the collection, and now, with the senator's request, CBP has started this process. The assessments will strengthen the Pecan Research and Promotion Program, benefiting the pecan industry in Georgia and across the nation.

STORY 6: State Sen. Clint Dixon Target Of 'Swatting' Hoaxes At His Buford Home

State Sen. Clint Dixon and his family experienced two consecutive "swatting" incidents, where 911 hoaxes prompted police and SWAT teams to respond to their home on Christmas and the following day. Swatting involves false emergency calls claiming serious threats, leading to a significant police response. The incidents occurred after Dixon had faced lewd and threatening calls earlier in the year related to his actions in calling for an investigation of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Dixon is now considering legislation to address swatting and impose harsher penalties for such dangerous and disruptive acts.

STORY 7: LAKO: Building wealth and security: Strategies for self-employed retirement success

The rise in self-employed and gig-economy workers has prompted a surge in entrepreneurship, contributing to economic recovery. Self-employed individuals should consider establishing a retirement plan early for financial security and tax benefits. Factors influencing the choice of plans include cash flow, short- and long-term tax benefits, and the number of employees. For those in the gig economy, starting with a Traditional or Roth IRA is suitable, with a contribution limit of $7,000 in 2024. The SEP IRA and Solo 401(k) are popular options for higher contributions, offering flexibility and tax advantages. Regular contributions and plan adjustments with business growth are advisable.

We’ll have final thoughts after this.

U.S. Representative Lucy McBath has nominated 22 high school students from Gwinnett and north Fulton counties for appointments to U.S. service academies. These nominations span across four prestigious institutions: the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.; the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md.; the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colo.; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point.

STORY 1: 2023's 118th Congress Records Historic Low in Productivity

The 118th Congress, during the year 2023, has been marked as one of the least productive in modern history, passing a mere 22 pieces of legislation. The House and Senate saw a total of 724 and 352 bills voted on respectively, but only a fraction of them were successfully enacted, with a success rate of 0.001%. The year was riddled with political turbulence, including a delayed election for the House Speaker, disagreements over a debt ceiling bill, and the eventual ousting of Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The limited number of enacted bills primarily revolved around topics such as veterans’ affairs, healthcare, defense, education, and public health. Despite the legislative gridlock, there appears to be a potential Senate discussion looming about additional support for Ukraine before the annual recess.

STORY 2: 'Stranger Things' Ends Eight-Year Hiatus

Fans of 'Stranger Things,' the suspense is finally coming to an end! After an eight-year hiatus, the beloved series is returning to metro Atlanta for its much-anticipated fifth and final season. Unforeseen delays due to strikes had previously postponed production, but with the young star-studded cast now navigating their college years, creators are expected to ingeniously bridge this age gap in the upcoming season. Season 5 will introduce fresh faces, including Linda Hamilton, while the Duffer brothers pledge to unravel even more enigmatic mysteries surrounding the Upside Down. Filming is slated to kick off on January 8th, 2024, paving the way for a potential premiere in 2025.

STORY 3: Century-Old Artificial Christmas Tree Fetches Over $4,000 at British Auction

As you adorn your home with a Christmas tree this season, consider this unique antique. Thought to be one of the earliest mass-produced artificial trees, a 103-year-old Christmas tree was recently sold at an auction in Britain. Standing merely 2.5 feet tall, this tree has been described by Hansons Auctioneers as the 'world's humblest Christmas tree,' and fetched a remarkable $4,296.13. Originating from 1920, this timeless artifact - featuring 25 branches, 12 berries, and six mini candle holders - is believed to have been initially bought from Woolworth's in London.

Catch the display at Grove Park Inn until January 2nd.

          STORY 5: COLLEGE BOWL GAMES

              Break 1: PEGGY SLAPPY

STORY 1: Composting Efforts to Combat Holiday Induced Environmental Issues

Now that the Christmas gifts have been opened and Christmas dinner has been consumed, local initiatives and composting efforts are aiming to address environmental issues during the holidays. Americans contribute to a 25% increase in waste, totaling 25 million tons during the holidays. Gift-giving, driven by sales, leads to unnecessary purchases, creating more waste. Unwanted gifts add to the problem, with 53% of Americans receiving them. Wrapping paper alone generates 40 million tons of waste annually. Online shopping contributes to excessive packaging, totaling 85 million tons of paper products each year. Food waste is another challenge, with 305 million pounds wasted annually from the holidays.

STORY 2: Holiday Air Travel Guide: What Can You Pack

Navigating through airport security during the holiday season can be daunting. Here's a quick rundown of what you can bring on your flight. Solid food items are generally allowed in both carry-on and checked bags. But TSA officers may need to inspect these at security checkpoints. Liquids and gels follow different rules. Wine and beer in unopened retail packaging are allowed. Declare them at check-in if in checked baggage and consider extra protection like freezer bags and bubble wrap. Golf clubs and bags can be checked in. For fishing equipment, check airline size limitations for carry-ons. Secure sharp tackle in checked bags. Bicycles have varying guidelines and fees, so consult your airline. Smaller instruments like guitars can be carried on, while larger ones must be checked in. All carry-on instruments may undergo security screening. Transporting weapons is allowed following TSA guidelines. Unloaded firearms in a locked hard-sided container can be checked in. For more information, contact the TSA.

STORY 3: Peak and Off-Peak Driving Hours for Christmas and New Year's in Georgia

The holiday season is upon us, and AAA predicts a record-breaking travel period in Georgia. An estimated 3.6 million Georgians are set to journey at least 50 miles between Dec. 23 and Jan. 1, 2024, a 2.8% rise from last year. The vast majority, about 3.3 million, will drive, while others will take to the skies. According to AAA's VP of Travel, Debbie Haas, this could be Georgia's busiest year-end holiday travel season on record. To avoid the rush, aim for travel before 10 a.m. from Dec. 26 to 30. Peak congestion times to avoid range from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. from Dec. 26 to 30. If you're driving on I-20 westbound from Augusta to Atlanta, be prepared - traffic could be 23% heavier than usual.

In an unexpected turn of events, a Virginia woman's $3.99 thrift store purchase turned into a $107,100 windfall. Jessica Vincent bought a colorful vase from a Goodwill store, not knowing it was part of the rare Pennelatte series by Italian architect Carlo Scarpa from the 1940s. The vase was auctioned at the Wright Auction House in Chicago to an anonymous private European collector. Vincent plans to use her unexpected earnings to install an HVAC system in her recently acquired farmhouse. This story serves as a vivid reminder that hidden treasures can indeed be found in the most unexpected places.

              STORY 5: EVENTS THIS WEEK

Atlanta Ballet's unique rendition of "The Nutcracker" returns to the Cobb Energy Centre, delighting audiences with an innovative blend of traditional stagecraft and modern technology. This reimagined classic is set to enchant viewers at 2pm today. In other entertainment news, Grammy Award-winning rapper Lil Baby is set to celebrate his birthday in style with his third annual birthday bash at State Farm Arena on December 27th. Fans can secure their spots to this star-studded event via Ticketmaster.com. Finally, Cirque du Soleil brings its latest spectacle, ECHO, to the Big Top at Atlantic Station. • Stay Safe and Festive: How to Prevent Christmas Tree Fires this Holiday Season

From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Monday, December 25th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Stay Safe and Festive: How to Prevent Christmas Tree Fires this Holiday Season

As we gather around our Christmas trees on Christmas Day, it's important to remember real Christmas trees can pose a serious fire hazard. Unlike artificial ones, dry real trees are highly flammable and can go up in flames in seconds.

The National Fire Protection Association has found that U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 160 home fires caused by Christmas trees each year from 2016 to 2020, leading to injuries and millions in property damage.

While a well-watered tree is resistant to flames, a dehydrated one ignites easily and can be consumed by fire in mere seconds.

So, remember to water your trees daily, keep them at least three feet away from heat sources, and make sure they don't block exits. And let's not forget - half of all home decoration fires in December are caused by candles. So, whether you're lighting up your tree or the rest of your home, exercise caution with decorations and lights. Stay safe, stay festive, and have a wonderful Christmas!

A small airplane crashed at Lake Lanier Islands Resort, resulting in the death of 60-year-old Howard Lee Joe from Dunwoody. The single-engine aircraft, identified as a Beechcraft Bonanza, crashed in a parking lot near Pine Cone Drive. The incident occurred just 15 minutes after taking off from DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. Fortunately, no injuries were reported on the ground. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash to determine its cause.

STORY 2: 52.2% Of Georgia Residents Feel Very Stressed About Inflation, 7th Highest in the U.S.Recent U.S. Consumer Price Index data indicates a slowdown in inflation, with an overall 3.2% increase in prices year-over-year for October 2023. Notably, energy and used vehicle prices have declined since last October. However, while the rate of increase approaches historical norms and the Federal Reserve's target of 2%, prices are still rising. Consumers continue to feel the impact of prolonged inflation, with the purchasing power of $1 today equivalent to $0.85 in January 2021. Financial stress persists, as 47.9% of Americans report being very stressed about recent price increases, and 57.5% express concerns about future inflation in the next six months. Southern states, particularly Mississippi and Louisiana, exhibit higher stress levels compared to northern states. The data also reveals Georgia-specific figures, where 52.2% of adults are very stressed about recent price increases, and 62.3% are very concerned about future price increases.

STORY 3: Supporters raising money to help Gwinnett family who lost home in fire

Dana Summerville and her twin sister, Denitra, are facing a challenging situation after their Lawrenceville home was destroyed in a fire less than two weeks before Christmas. Dana has two sons with disabilities, and the family needs community support to rebuild their lives. The fire occurred on December 15, resulting in a total loss of their home. Despite the devastating setback, no one was injured. Lavonda Myers, the aunt, has initiated a GoFundMe campaign with a $50,000 goal to assist the family in purchasing life necessities such as food, clothing, and school items. As of now, the campaign has raised $6,721 from 85 donations.

STORY 1: Gwinnett Schools Trail State In College Readiness, Closing Achievement Gaps

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) in Georgia outperformed the state in various areas of the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) but lags behind in closing achievement gaps and preparing high school students for college. In Content Mastery, Progress, and Readiness, GCPS scored higher than the state average, particularly excelling in algebra and elementary school readiness. However, the district struggled in Closing Gaps, with significant disparities across student groups. In the Readiness category, GCPS surpassed the state in some aspects but fell short in Career, Technical, or Agricultural Education (CTAE) pathway completion and overall college and career readiness. The graduation rate for GCPS is slightly lower than the state average. Notably, due to a change from the U.S. Department of Education, there are no overall CCRPI scores for schools, districts, or the state. The detailed data can be explored on the state's CCRPI data portal at ccrpi.gadoe.org.

STORY 2: Shocking discovery that electric jolts to the brain may help us learn

A new study reveals that electrical shocks to the brain can potentially halve the time needed to learn complex tasks. Doctors learning to use robotic surgery tools in virtual reality (VR) performed better when receiving brain shocks compared to those who didn't. The research from Johns Hopkins University suggests that stimulating certain brain areas could help healthcare professionals transition skills learned in VR to real operating rooms. The study involved participants performing surgical tasks and receiving electrical stimulation to the cerebellum. The findings indicate improved dexterity and performance in those receiving steady brain stimulation, offering insights into potential applications in medical training and beyond.

STORY 3: Artificial intelligence discovers antibiotic to take out superbug

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have employed artificial intelligence (AI) to identify a class of compounds capable of killing the antibiotic-resistant superbug MRSA. The AI model was used to search for compounds targeting the drug-resistant bacterium responsible for thousands of deaths globally each year. The researchers trained a deep learning model using an expanded dataset and adapted an algorithm to decipher how the model made its predictions. The AI screening identified compounds from five different classes as potential MRSA treatments. The study aims to discover new classes of antibiotics against seven types of deadly bacteria over seven years.

STORY 4: How having the rare inability to burp impacts quality of life

A study by Texas Tech University has revealed that individuals suffering from retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction (R-CPD), a rare condition that makes it impossible to burp, often feel too embarrassed to seek help, leading to a decrease in their quality of life. R-CPD is caused by a muscle in the throat failing to relax, preventing the outward passage of gas. The study found that sufferers experience abdominal bloating, socially awkward gurgling noises, excessive flatulence, and difficulty vomiting. Despite these symptoms, only half of the participants discussed them with their primary care clinician, and 90% felt they did not receive adequate help.

STORY 5: REVIEW: Mike White's touch helps make 'Migration' worthwhile journey

In the animated film "Migration," written by Mike White, the transformative power of travel is explored through a family of ducks taking their annual migration. The patriarch, Mack, voiced by Kumail Nanjiani, is initially anxious and overprotective but decides to venture south with his family. The film, swift and appealing, features well-executed flying scenes and familiar character design. White infuses cultural commentary into the story, highlighting lessons learned through travel and adventure, especially about relationships. The main antagonist, a tattooed chef, represents a predator, adding an ethical dimension. "Migration" is a family-friendly holiday movie with cultural insights, making it a worthwhile journey.

STORY 6: Childhood parental loss can lead to relationship anxiety in later life

A recent study suggests that women who lose a parent during childhood are more likely to experience "separation anxiety" and display an "anxious attachment" in relationships. The research, published in Stress and Health, involved 60 women who lost one or both parents early in life and 60 women with living parents. Those who experienced parental loss reported higher levels of anxious attachment and separation anxiety from a partner, especially in the first five years of a romantic relationship, gradually declining after a decade. The study highlights the potential long-term impact of early parental loss on adult attachment styles.

STORY 7: Judge reviewing Georgia political maps pledges to render decision on lawfulness ‘very quickly’

A federal judge, Steve Jones, is reviewing Georgia's new congressional and legislative maps after he previously ruled that the 2021 attempt did not comply with the Voting Rights Act. The judge is focusing on protecting the rights of Black voters. While the new congressional map includes a new majority Black district, it rearranges another majority-minority district, prompting debates about gerrymandering and the Voting Rights Act. The debate over the state House and Senate maps revolves around geography, and the judge is expected to render a decision on their lawfulness soon, with time constraints for local elections approaching.

From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Thursday, December 21st, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Homebuilder Buys 59-Acres of Sugarloaf Crossing Master Plan Property

In a recent development, an Atlanta-area homebuilder has acquired a significant portion of a nearly 200-acre undeveloped property known as the Sugarloaf Crossing Master Plan. The parcel, which amounts to 58.9 acres, was sold by Walton Global, a land asset management and real estate investment firm. The details about the homebuilder and the transaction amount remain undisclosed.

The purchased land is located at the intersection of Winder Highway and State Route 316, east of Lawrenceville. This marks the first sale of land from the master plan, which is envisioned to be a mixed-use community including office and retail spaces among other uses.

Anthony Sparrow, Walton Global's Executive Vice President of Real Estate, expressed excitement about initiating development at Sugarloaf Crossing. He highlighted the buyer's reputation for high-quality residential developments and the thriving market in Gwinnett County.

As of now, the housing plan for the property is described as "a variety of housing options." Walton Global is actively seeking developers for the remaining 125 acres of the property. The company cites Gwinnett's job market and population growth, along with the site's strategic location off Highway 316, as attractive factors for potential buyers.

STORY 1: Gwinnett Place CID Reports Nearly $16 Billion Economic Impact

The Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District (CID) in Georgia has reported a substantial economic impact of $15.9 billion, showcasing its role as a significant economic driver in the region. Despite the Gwinnett Place CID occupying less than 1% of Gwinnett County's total land area and the local mall being mostly vacant, the economic impact increased by $2.5 billion in the last three years and $6.4 billion since 2017. The CID contributes 28,688 jobs, accounting for 7% of all jobs in Gwinnett County, with retail, accommodation and food services, and professional services sectors being key contributors. The area is set for major redevelopment, aiming for a "Global Villages"-style transformation.

STORY 2: NBC News names Gwinnett County one of seven key 'Decider' counties in 2024 presidential election

NBC News has identified Gwinnett County, Georgia, as one of seven "Decider" counties that will play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. As part of its "The Deciders" hyperlocal reporting effort, NBC will invest in covering demographic bellwether counties that played crucial roles in the 2020 and 2022 election cycles. With Gwinnett crossing the 1 million residents mark in 2023, it has become a politically significant county, having shifted from a Republican stronghold to being won by Democrats in recent elections. NBC News will deploy nearly three dozen journalists, including correspondent Blayne Alexander, to cover Gwinnett County's political dynamics leading up to the 2024 election.

STORY 3: Atlanta man charged with trafficking of disabled adult

Felipe Smith, 24, from Atlanta, has been indicted in Clayton County on charges related to trafficking an adult female with a developmental disability. The defendant allegedly transported and provided the victim for commercial sex acts at various hotels in metro Atlanta, benefiting financially from the sales. The case has a connection to Smith's association with the criminal street gang PDE. Investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Human Exploitation and Trafficking Unit, the Attorney General’s Human Trafficking and Gang Prosecution Units, the case represents an effort to combat human trafficking and gang activity in Georgia. Smith faces multiple charges, including trafficking and violations of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act.

STORY 4: C-sections could prevent women from conceiving again: study

A new study reveals that women who have had a previous C-section are 10% less likely to conceive again. The research also found a reciprocal link, with women who took over a year to conceive being 21% more likely to deliver via C-section. Additionally, those facing conception difficulties were more prone to develop serious health problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus. While earlier studies linked reduced fertility after C-section to the surgical procedure, this study suggests that common underlying risk factors may contribute to both reduced fertility and C-section. Maternal stress is proposed as a plausible explanation connecting challenges in conceiving and an elevated risk of labor difficulties, leading to a higher likelihood of C-section.

STORY 5: UGA researcher explores ancient wheat genomes to improve bread wheat diversity

A two-year project, the Wheat Diversity Project, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, aims to sequence the genomes of 12 landrace varieties representing the global diversity of bread wheat. Led by the International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium, the initiative includes plant genomics expert Robin Buell from the University of Georgia. Landraces, traditional wheat varieties adapted to local conditions, carry genetic diversity with key traits for crop improvement. The project will update the reference genome for bread wheat research and develop a haplotype graph for genomics and breeding research. The information will be publicly accessible for wheat breeding advancements.
