March 31, 1873. The SS Atlantic is making its 19th trip across the Atlantic Ocean, carrying nearly 1,000 passengers from Liverpool, England to New York City. But there was a problem. It was running out of fuel. Its captain decided on a change of course. And that decision would lead to one of the worst disasters in maritime history.
