  • #643: MM-Olive Oil for Alzheimers?

Did you know that olive oil may help prevent Alzheimer's disease? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. It's true, extra virgin olive oil has been shown to prevent Alzheimer's disease in an animal study that was published in the Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology. In the study, the research team genetically modified the rodents to have Alzheimer's and then divided them into two groups. The rodents that were fed olive oil had healthier synapses between neurons. Those rodents also had less toxic debris between the brain cells. This is not surprising since the Mediterranean Diet, which includes olive oil has long been praised for its healing effects. • #634: The Real Price of Diabetes

Do you know the real cost of diabetes? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Did you know that over 8% of our population suffers from diabetes? It not only costs our country a small fortune in health expenses, it can cost the individual about 6 years off of their life. The price of diabetes is just too high! We should all be working together to avoid getting the disease in the first place. You can start by exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight, but remember, the scale doesn't tell the whole story. You don't have to be obese to suffer from diabetes, so watch what you eat and avoid sugary snacks and packaged and processed foods. Choose fresh fruits and vegetables and be sure to get plenty of lean protein. Avoid pointless snacking and eat at structured times. Together we can save ourselves and our families from the devastation of diabetes, but we have to put in the effort. • #630: Sleep, Not One Size Fits All

Do you know how much sleep you need? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Over the years, Americans have become sleep deprived. Back in the 1970s the average adult slept for 8.5 hours, but today we're lucky to get 7 hours of sleep. The average adult needs 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep per night. So if you're only sleeping 6 hours a night – that means you're missing at least 45 hours of sleep per month and YES it does add up! Unfortunately, our kids are suffering too. Parents need to be sure their infants are sleeping about 16 hours and their teens at least 9 hours. Sleep plays a very important role in development as well as continued good health. Can't sleep? Well, start with a long walk, followed by a warm bath, and topped off with a cool dark room and a comfortable bed. If you try all these things and still no luck – it's time for a physical exam to make sure there isn't an underlying medical condition. There's so much to know about living healthy... and that's why you can find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. • #629: Tips To Increase Your Brain Power and Size

Did you know you can grow your brain? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. It's true, you can grow your brain and the easiest way to do it is through exercise. That jog around the block or those laps in the pool are not just good for the extremities, they help your brain too. When we exercise, acetycholine is activated and our levels of neutrophins increase – causing brain cells to be made. A research study out of the University of Victoria found that people who take up walking three times a week see an increase in brain size in as little as three months. This is also great news for those suffering from or at risk for dementia because a separate study found that 30 minutes of exercise, five times a week can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's by 35%. So get up and get moving – your brain will thank you.For more unique and useful health information on more than 100 different topics, visit STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM where you can also find my book, Aged to Perfection, How to Thrive to 100, Happy Healthy & Wise. • #633: Common Health Mistakes In Your 20s, 30s, and More

What mistakes are you making now that will affect your health later? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Our lives change and so do our bodies. You see, as we age our possible health pitfalls change. In our teenage years, we may not get the extra sleep our body needs to support a growing changing body. Then when we leave for college, things like drugs and alcohol may sneak in, sometimes becoming a lasting bad habit. Around age 30 and 40 we start to become so wrapped up in our careers that we work too many hours and forget to take time to rest. Unfortunately, once we finally decide to slow down a bit around 50 we may have already become dependent on stimulants like excessive caffeine. The best way to avoid these "pitfalls by decade" is to understand them and make a conscious effort not to fall in. THAT MUSIC MEANS IT'S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE'RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

Fasting boosts stem cells and new research out of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) shows that Age-related declines in stem cell function can be reversed by a 24-hour fast. The study was done on mice of all ages, but found that regardless of age, a 24 hour fast had a dramatic health benefit. They found evidence that fasting helps the intestinal cells repair themselves, something that is usually harder to do as we age. This may lead to new medications that mimic the fasting process for those who are unable to fast, such as diabetics.
