The Steel City Insider: With Jim Wexell & Jeremy Hritz

Aaron Rodgers is giving Steelers fans plenty to watch heading into Thursday’s preseason opener — and the beat writers who have been on the ground at training camp are seeing some developments that could shape the roster.

Jim Wexell and Roy Countryman break down what they’ve personally seen around Steelers camp, including Rodgers’ impact on the offense, Roman Wilson’s emergence, Pat Freiermuth’s outstanding camp, Mason Rudolph’s continued consistency, and what Will Howard and Drew Allar? still need to prove when the preseason games begin.

The quarterback situation is particularly intriguing. Rodgers appears to be operating at another level in camp, while Rudolph has impressed with his consistency. Will Howard and the rest of the young quarterbacks now have an opportunity to show whether their practice performances translate against live competition.

And there’s much more.

The beat writers also dive into Dylan Cook’s emergence at right tackle, the offensive-line competition, Gabriel Rubio as a potential preseason breakout candidate, Patrick Queen and Peyton Wilson’s development, the questions surrounding the safety room, Carson Bruner’s potential special-teams impact, and the players who could surprise Steelers Nation.

Then there’s the biggest question heading into Thursday:

What will Will Howard and the young quarterbacks look like when the pads are popping and the competition is real?

That’s where camp evaluation meets actual football.

This is the kind of Steelers coverage you get when the people talking about the team are actually following the team from the ground — watching practices, listening to player interviews, talking through roster battles, and comparing what they’re seeing with what the public is hearing.

With the first preseason game coming Thursday, these are the developments Steelers fans need to be watching NOW.

Who are you watching most closely in Thursday’s preseason opener — Will Howard, the other quarterbacks, Roman Wilson, Gabriel Rubio, or one of the other camp standouts?
