On this episode of Periop Talk, we discuss the evolution and use of the Surgical Checklist with Past President of AORN Mary Jo Steiert who was on the ground floor during its creation and, with AORN, was tasked with introducing it to the U.S.

In mid-2008, the World Health Organization (WHO) convened its second international gathering of healthcare providers who were challenged with coming up with something tangible that would improve safety for surgical patients. Mary Jo and AORN’s current CEO Linda Groah, were invited to take part at that historic gathering in Geneva, Switzerland. 

The result was the Surgical Checklist that had been modeled internationally and was now ready for the U.S. The process, while simple, has made a big difference in preventing errors and improving patient safety. Ten years later, it’s used in nearly every surgical suite. Why then do we continue to see a steady rate of wrong-site surgeries?
