Last night Brian & I (The Survival Preppers) were on The Angry Preppers YOuTube channel talking about a societal breakdown. Today, I want to dig a little deeper into why I think society or society as we know it is doomed.

Loss of family values, the upward transfer of wealth, and increasingly strong-armed governments all play a role in where we are headed in the not-so-distant future. In this show, I go over how our society is falling apart here in the U.S. and how the elites and corporations are trying to take control of our future.

So I know most people here are already Preppers, and possibly everyone is, but I think in the coming month’s everyone in one aspect or another is going to become a prepper. We’re already seeing record inflation, shortages, and supply chain issues, and it all looks like it will get worse soon.

As Americans, we’ve embraced the made in China Walmart mentality. We’ve embraced the Amazon Buy It Now button. And can even get our groceries delivered right to the front door. 

Remember the days when only a handful of movies came out each year, or you had to be sitting in front of your TV when your favorite show came on or you missed it? These days there are 100 streaming services that we can watch something new literally every night for a small monthly fee. 

If you remember having to balance a checkbook, having to write a check to pay a bill, or remembering when it was necessary to carry cash in your wallet, not a choice, you understand how easy life is these days. 

My point is that everything is convenient, everything is digital, and everything is made far away from where we live. This means that even the most minor interruptions greatly impact our lives. These days, those small things are stacking up, creating what seems to be the perfect storm.  

All Good Things Come to an End

While life is much different than it was during The Great Depression, we may see ourselves returning to how they lived back then. And while some of us are ready for this, most people wouldn’t even know where to begin without Amazon and Walmart. 

In the video below, I talk about some things we can do to fight inflation and prepare for food shortages in the coming months. although life is different these days, we can learn quite a few lessons from the great depression.

While there seems to be no end to the different prepping supplies and survival gear we can buy, not everything is truly necessary. As a matter of fact, some of the supplies we purchase may never get used, and there will be supplies we wished we had.

The reality is, we’re probably going to discover we’re not as prepared as we thought when SHTF (Shit Hits the Fan). That’s why it’s never a bad thing to have a Bug Out Bag (BOB) full of your SHTF survival gear ready. But what are the essential items you need for SHTF situations? As preppers we think about what life would be like under Martial Law all the time, but what is the likelihood of it being enacted, and to what scale. It’s also important to note that Martial Law doesn’t need to be enacted for them to do whatever they want.

In the show we discussed what the different form of Martial Law might look like, how it’s been implemented in the past, and how laws already on the books make it possible for them to sidestep Martial Law.

Through the years, presidents and politicians have added laws to the books that enable them to do what they need in the name of safety and security. Anti-hoarding laws and eminent domain mean they can come to take whatever they want, from whomever they want. The big question is will they?

The Blabbercast

To the average person, prepping is no more than a collection of wack jobs preparing for the end of the world. This perception is because of the MSM pushing the narrative and highlighting extreme cases and people’s hesitation to take a serious look at anything that might affect their daily lives.

Another reason people are apprehensive about preparing for disasters or unforeseen events is that people are reactionary and have very short memories. The recent pandemic has proven how true this is.

You remember the great toilet paper shortage of 2020 right? People failed to prepare beforehand and rushed out and emptied the store shelves of anything they could wipe their butts with. A few months later, the panic has subsided, and people are back to their everyday daily lives.

We saw the same thing happen during Y2K. People rushed out to buy generators only to sell them a couple of months later. There is no need to prepare for situations that may or may not happen to the average person.

We get labeled crazy for talking about an economic collapse and having some food storage, but it’s perfectly acceptable to say climate change will kill us all in 20 years and to wear a mask while you’re alone in your car.

The Preparedness Lifestyle

From the outside looking in, prepping is about nuclear bombs and large-scale disasters. But anyone doing this for a while knows that is only one piece to a giant puzzle. Disaster preparedness is about preparing for anything life may throw at us, regardless of the scale.

The big disasters get the headlines, but personal doomsdays happen all the time.

No matter how far to go with preparedness, it needs to be a lifestyle and not a fad or stage you go through. I’m sure you’ve heard it a million times, but prepping is no different than having insurance. If you let that insurance lapse, you are taking a considerable risk.

Living the preparedness lifestyle has more benefits than most people realize. If something happens tomorrow, we’ll be ready for it, and if nothing happens during our lifetime, that doesn’t mean prepping was a waste of time.

Prepping Life Skills

Prepping Mindset

You start to think about every situation through a prepping lens. The way we think about problems is different than before we knew about operational security and situational awareness.

Everything from the conversations we have with people to what we do daily is different because of preparedness. An example I used in the video was how I used to walk through a grocery store parking lot without a care in the world. Now I constantly scan my surroundings.

Looking for alternative routes while driving, having realistic expectations about people in a crisis, and handling our finances and health are all examples of how preparedness changes your outlook.   

Personal Doomsdays

It’s not always about large-scale disaster scenarios.

In today’s show, we have a great guest on with us to talk about building a preparedness network and having the right mindset going into any disaster or SHTF situation. Butch runs the Hope For Survival website, has written a couple of books, and is a presenter at Heritage Life Skills.

Butch is the author of the preparedness book Hope for Survival – How Food, Water, Shelter, and Security Could Save Your Life and runs the preparer website Hope for Survival where he publishes a weekly newsletter, articles, and started a weekly virtual zoom rally to allow HFS preparers the opportunity to continue preparing with other like-minded individuals.  

Through Covid-19 during 2020 HFS has built preparedness groups virtually helping community groups better prepare for the day-to-day disasters and life changes. 

Butch is a decorated U.S. Air Force Veteran of 20 years and public speaker on Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Recovery.  With over 39 years of experience in all facets of global security, vulnerability assessments, and emergency planning, Butch continues his efforts to focus on the spiritual and psychological foundation of the family and individual preparedness. 

Preparedness Groups & Networks

While not everyone can join or create a prepping group, it’s nearly impossible to be the “Lone Wolf” and expect to survive in longer-term situations. Throughout history, people have created communities and joined together because no one can be 100% self-reliant.

We need to surround ourselves with people who can benefit our preparedness plans and not decrease our survivability. This doesn’t mean we need to form a defined “prepper groups”, but as Butch mentioned in the show, there are other options available.

The Preparedness Mindset

In the show, Butch talked about why having the right mindset is so important in preparedness. Not just in a disaster situation, but for every stage of preparedness. Having the right mindset in the beginning stages of preparedness is just as important as they are in the latter stages.

Having the proper mindset also helps you stay vigilant and focus on the important tasks that will have the most benefit down the road. While we’d all love to have a year’s worth of food storage, but we need to start with weeks and months before we get to years.

Remember the good old days of prepping when we thought about hypothetical disaster situations and didn’t have the same sense of urgency we have these days?  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying NO sense of urgency, I’m saying we thought about these manmade disasters as something we probably had a little time to prepare for.

These days it seems that anything can and will happen, and that something big is just around the corner. It seems as though we are standing at the edge of a cliff, and behind us is a herd of social justice warrior, politicians, and the mainstream media personalities running full speed towards us. 

I have always been the type of person that prepares for the worst and hopes for the best, but these days hoping for the best seems like a myopic fantasy. Will it be some sort of full fledged SHTF scenario? Will it be something slow burning that affects us for an extended period of time? Who knows, but it sure feels like change is coming, and it’s coming sooner than most people think.

I make sure and reassess my preparedness plans periodically, but this time it seems to hold more importance than it ever has before. Could I just be paranoid and being a “Doomsdayer”? I suppose so.  But I’d rather be a Doomsdayer than have my head buried in the sand with my fingers crossed, hoping everything will be fine.

When you have a leak in the roof, you fix it before is ruins the whole house. Our country has a huge hole in its roof, and instead of fixing it, everyone just grabs an umbrella and waits for the rain to stop. That’s all fine and good until it starts to rain again.

My point is, we can only control what we can control. We need to do everything in our power to do what we can, and then let the cards fall where they may. Reassessing your preparedness priorities won’t give you every answer, but it will give you a better idea about where to focus your time and energy.

Personal Doomsdays, Natural & Man Made Disasters

We know that having a well-rounded preparedness plan means prepping for anything life might throw our way. When it comes to surviving personal doomsdays and natural disasters, there isn’t much we can do but learn and prepare. There is nothing we can do to stop many of these acts of God from happening, but we can (and should) help ourselves to survive them.

Manmade disasters on the other hand are self-inflicted wounds that can be avoided, but all too often are not. No one pays attention until it’s too late. On an individual level there is not much we can do, but as a society we are responsible for letting these things happen.

As a society we have allowed politicians to become corrupt, we’ve allowed big business to infiltrate the government, and we’ve allowed the MSM to dictate how we think and feel. Because life has been so good for so long, we have taken for granted the life and liberty we hold so dear.

Bug Out Bag Myths

I recently came across an article from SeasonedCitizenPrepper that brings up some good points about what you should have in your bug out bag, and some lies that get regurgitated in the preparedness community.

The truth is, there isn’t a “one size fits all” when it comes to bug out bags, get home bags, or everyday carry kits. Each person is different, lives in a different environment, has a different skill set, and therefor will need different prepping supplies in their packs.

In this show Brain and I go over some of the points we agree with, and some we don’t. While everyone has their opinions, the decision is ultimately up to you when deciding what gear needs to be in your bug out bag.  

In the video below we talk about some of the exaggerated claims made by some of these prepping websites, and what some of the most likely realities of using your bug out bag would be. Here are a few things we covered in the video and the podcast.

* Your bug out bag will most likely be riding in your back seat, not on your back.

* If you can’t use it, you don’t need it.

* Hygiene and sanitation are underrated.

* Why an expensive bag is actually a bad idea.

Why Preppers Get Labeled as Crazy

In the second half of the show we talked about how preppers get labeled as fear mongers, nut jobs and hoarders. It also seems like the average persons interest in preparedness rolls in and out like the tide. The recent pandemic raised the eyebrows of a lot of people, but that interest seems to be waning.

Brain recently wrote an article over at Mind4Survival asking the question “Are Preppers Crazy”. We also talked about an article I wrote in the past about why preppers aren’t the crazy ones. I think preppers are playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers. As preppers we tend to look 3 or 4 moves ahead, while everyone else is rolling with the tide.

In the video below we went over how fear plays into prepping, and how it can be a good and a bad thing. Sometimes fear can motivate us, and sometimes it can paralyze us. It’s also important to understand how people just getting interested in preparedness can be turned away based on how we approach the subject of prepping.

There is a lot of debate in the preparedness community about how people will react in any sort of SHTF scenario or crisis. This week we talked about how decisions you make will be made because of the people around you, and how people can either make a bad situation even worse, or a little better.

You have no doubt heard the scenario where a woman and her children come to the door asking for food, while her husband is hiding around the corner waiting in ambush. While this situation is certainly possible, we need to take into consideration other situations that aren’t so obvious.

People as a whole are pretty predictable, and these disaster scenarios are also fairly predictable. Things get a little more complicated when you start to look at these events and how people will react on a smaller scale, or an individual level.

How People Will Become the X Factor in a Crisis

In the video below we went over some things to look for and expect with people in any sort of disaster situation, and even events that are not large scale “Mad Max” type situations. As we see on Black Friday every year, it doesn’t take much for people to lose their minds…especially when there is a group of them.

We also wanted to make the point this week that it’s not always about people reacting badly. People will create communities and look for support because people need people. It is our responsibility to figure out who might be an asset to our situation, and who might be a threat to our survival.

Leaders, Followers & Turds

People can be boiled down to 3 categories. Some are leaders, some are followers and some are just plain turds. While all of us probably have a little of each of these quality’s is us, the majority of our character is made up of one of these.

Leaders: We all have the ability to be a leader in us, it’s just that some of us are more reluctant than others. It’s also important to remember that being a leader doesn’t mean being a good guy, a turd can be a leader as well. But as the saying goes “A polished turd is still a turd”

A good leader is usually someone with a high moral compass, and someone who is looking out for everyone in the group. A good leader is also a good listener and makes decisions based on what’s good for the group, not personal gain.

Followers: Being a follower can be either good or bad. On the bad side are the sheeple, and there are far more sheeple than there are leaders and turds. Sheeple will follow blindly based on what a leader says and not question anything they do.

As a prepper it’s ok to be more of a follower than a leader, as long as we don’t become one of the sheep. Some people would rather be part of the team, than lead the team. A team member might be a better term for this type of person because there will be a greater need for team members than leaders.

Turds: These are the people we need to look out for. These are the people with no moral structure whatsoever, and who will make decisions based on their needs, regardless who gets caught in the crossfire.

Turds are the criminals, the looters during riots and anyone looking for an opportunity to take advantage of the weak. Unfortunately, most of these people believe they are “leaders” because when the rules don’t apply, you can do or say anything. This type of leader preys on the follower.

Lessons From Texas

We’ve all seen the news stories about people sleeping in cars, icicles handing from ceiling fans and cars piled up on the roads, but we wanted to talk with Sara who lived through it.
