In the US, the two main ingredients used to meet the protein requirement of pigs are soybean meal and synthetic amino acids. For the most part, whether to rely on one or the other depends on how the market is behaving – but do pigs respond differently to each method? In this episode, I talk with Dr. Henrique Cemin about a study he performed that tested two diets with different soybean meal inclusion rates for grow-finish pigs in order to better clarify this issue.

Dr. Henrique Cemin is from Porto Alegre, Brazil. He obtained his degree in Veterinary Medicine and his Master's in Animal Science from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, and received his Ph.D. in Applied Swine Nutrition from Kansas State University, where much of his research was related to amino acids for nursery and finishing pigs. Currently a Senior Swine Nutritionist at Hubbard Feeds, a company that conducts more than 20 large-scale experiments every year by using a total of about 50,000 pigs, his primary responsibilities include providing technical support and managing the company's R&D program.

Preferred selection criteria have changed drastically over the last several decades. When it comes to that matter, increasing growth rate is typically high on the priority list – but should you select for increased gain in the nursery or in the finishing period? In this episode, I talk with Madie Wensley about her study that evaluated 2 different sire lines – one selected for early maturing pigs and another, for late maturing pigs – to see how their growth rates and stress levels differed from birth until market.

Madie Wensley obtained her B.S. in Animal Science at Michigan State University and her M.S. in Applied Swine Nutrition at Kansas State University. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate, and her research has been focused on different feeding and management strategies to maintain continuity of nutrient intake in young pigs after weaning, with the goal of decreasing mortality. While completing her Ph.D., Madie served as the swine undergraduate research coordinator, overseeing undergraduate student workers and research projects that resulted in presentations at various college and national scientific forums. Nowadays, Madie manages data and completes statistical analysis for a commercial research program within a large swine production system. She is well-trained in experimental design, diet formulation, protocol planning and implementation, and statistical analysis and interpretation.

Increasing pig growth performance is a topic that I am sure you are all familiar with. It has direct economically applicable results and can increase the health of the herd at the same time. In this episode, I talk with AJ Warner about a study he performed feeding Tri-basic copper chloride in conjunction with an ionophore to grow-finish pigs and evaluating their affects on growth performance throughout the finishing period.

Pelleting swine feed increases theits temperature, of the feed which has made people worry about causing the Maillard reaction and, thus, making the amino acids less digestible. Several studies in the past have evaluated the pelleting process and have shown that this reaction is not likely to occur, but what if more reducing sugars weare added? In this episode, I talk withto Dr. Kara Dunmire about her searchwork searching for an answer to that question by testing the availability of amino acids in swine diets fed with high levels of reducing sugars and free amino acids.

Dr. Kara Dunmire is originally from Pennsylvania, where she got her B.S. from Penn State. She then transferred to Texas A&M University, where she earned her M.S. in Sswine nNutrition. In 2018, she began her Ph.D. research at the Feed Science Department of Kansas State University’s Feed Science Department with focusing on ingredient quality and amino acid digestibility. She receivedgraduated with her Ph.D.degree in 2022, and has recently begun working at Purina as a Process R&D Scientist.

The two most important nutrients in a swine diet are widely known to be energy and amino acids (AA). Before we even think about adding in other additives or new ingredient sources, we need to make sure we are feeding the most efficient energy and AA ratios we can. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Jorge Estrada about his study feeding different energy and AA levels to determine the impacts of different levels on gain, feed intake, and other parameters in maternal barrows.

Dr. Jorge Estrada grew up in Columbia and moved to the US to attend the University of Illinois in 2010. He received his M.S. in 2013 and his Ph.D. in 2017, both from the University of Illinois. During which, he did a lot of collaborative work with the Masschhoffs in the field of applied nutrition. He then worked as a development and innovative swine specialist at Premex before accepting a job as the Director of Swine Nutrition at Carthage Systems, which he has held since 2020.

Most evaluations of swine feeding programs focus on the economic impacts each program has. However, to achieve sustainable pork production, we can’t forget to pay attention to the environmental impacts the feeding program has as well. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Edward Yang about his study testing four different feeding programs and evaluating their impact on productivity, nutrient efficiency, and various environmental parameters.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2016 and his M.S. from the University of Minnesota in

2018. His Ph.D. dissertation focused on research that will facilitate improvements in precision

swine nutrition and environmental sustainability in global pork production systems. Edward was

a recipient of the Young Scholar Award at the 2022 American Society of Animal Science

Midwest Meeting. In addition, he is actively bridging the connections between U.S. and China

feed and pork industries. Edward recently joined Nutribins, LLC as the Business Development

Manager.

The first several weeks of a piglets life can be very stressful. Not only do their bodies endure physical and mental stress, but also oxidative stress, which can lead to increased cell and tissue damage. In this episode, I talk with Dan Bussières about a study testing a polyphenol fed to sows to see if it can increase the piglets resistance to oxidative stress by absorbing antioxidants from the milk and colostrum.

Dan Bussières is the co-founder of Groupe Cérès in Canada; he has been in the swine industry business for 25 years involved in production, research, and nutrition. He graduated in 1996 from Laval University in Quebec, and he and his partner founded Groupe Cérès Inc. in 2004. Dan works on the development and monitoring of nutrition programs for swine producers all over Canada. Dan is working with many industry partners to conduct field research projects which aim at developing new feed programs in order to optimize pig performance, profitability, and meat quality. Today, Groupe Cérès Inc. employs more than 80 people and is committed to continue working with Canadian-produced pigs.

Feed prices continue to rise in the swine industry. With the constant fluctuations and unpredictability, we always need to evaluating the potential to use novel sources to provide pigs with nutrients. In this episode with Dr. Lee-Anne Huber, we talk about a black soldier fly larvae meal and its use in nursery diets, and its cost and availability.

Dr. Lee-Anne Huber was raised on a mixed farm of beef cattle and pigs just north of Guelph, Ontario. She decided to attend the University of Guelph with the intention of becoming a large animal veterinarian but discovered the world of swine nutrition research instead. After her BSc she continued with an MSc and PhD also at the University of Guelph and a post-doctoral fellowship at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Dr. Huber's research program focuses on sustainability of swine production using nutrition as a tool. Currently, she is examining low-environmental impact feed ingredients, identifying means to improve the value of feed ingredients, and using precision agriculture to better meet and predict the nutrient requirements of lactating and gestating sows using novel feeding technologies and mathematical models.

Nitrogen and ammonia emissions are a constant concern for animal sustainability as we increase the amount of pork produced around the world. However decreasing nitrogen emissions is often done by reducing the amount of crude protein fed, which can decrease performance. In this episode, Dalton Humphrey and I talk about his study providing benzoic acid to growing pigs to see how effective it is at decreasing emissions without hindering average daily gain.

Dalton Humphrey is a Ph.D. student at Iowa State University with Dr. Laura Greiner studying swine nutrition. His dissertation work focuses on the branched-chain amino acid requirements of nursery pigs and lactating sows. Dalton graduated with his M.S. in Animal Science in 2021 under the mentorship of Dr. Greiner, where his research investigated the impacts of diet on the nutrient excretion and gas emissions of grow-finish pigs.

With fluctuations in pig diet ingredient costs, it is always prudent to have alternative feed ingredients priced and changes in gain and feed intake estimated in the event of a significant price increase of typical ingredients such as corn or soybean meal. In this episode, Caitlyn Sullivan and I discuss her trial of replacing increasing levels of corn with hybrid rye to see how it affects average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and gain-to-feed ratios for finisher pigs.

Caitlyn Sullivan is pursuing an M.S. in Monogastric Nutrition at South Dakota State University under the supervision of Dr. Bob Thaler. Before attending South Dakota State, she received her B.S. in Animal Science with a Minor in Plant Science from the University of Missouri. Her thesis supports National Pork Board’s sustainability efforts, specifically with hybrid rye and its effects on growth performance, carcass characteristics, agronomic sustainability, and milling efficiency.
