As we head into the fall I want to say a warm welcome to the people that have stepped forward to take on roles in the various teams that help our gatherings happen each week. In particular, I want to acknowledge our new team members. There can be no collective experience without individual contributions, and I feel deeply grateful for each person that does their part so that we can all enjoy being together. A special thank you to those that helped us through the summer season when volunteers are generally in shorter supply. At this point we’re in pretty good shape heading into the year, with the exception of the Kids Table team which could really use one more person. If you are interested, you can be in touch by replying to this email. Expressing your interest doesn’t mean you “signed on” – it would just initiate a further, more personal conversation to see if you want to jump in.
A word about this weeks Talky Bit…Sometimes, as my grandfather would have said it, I want to “have my cake and eat it too”. At The Table, that sometimes takes the shape of wanting to enjoy the freedom to explore what I believe from a personal vantage point, and also to have something to present in the Talky Bit that I’ve already explored in advance. Tricky business! Usually I lean toward exploring on my own ahead of time, and then bringing something relatively prepared to offer to the community. But once in a while I have an idea that doesn’t fit that frame. Maybe it’s too big, maybe it’s too weird, maybe it’s just unwieldy inside my brain and won’t really settle down into a tidy 30 minute package. Whatever…this week brought me one of those. So this Sunday in the Talky Bit I’ll be in full-on “I don’t really know if this idea works or not” mode. I offer it to you in full confidence that I’m in the company of explorers that are both capable and inclined to adventure, so I’m not feeling uncomfortable about it. It’s more that I thought you should have a little heads-up, is all.
At core of what I’ll be poking around in is a set of questions about the migrant nature of both our history as a species and how that might connect with our daily experiences with time and memory, as well as how it might connect with the Hebrew origin stories we find in Genesis, and what God has to do with that whole thing. Did I mention that this won’t be tidy? It won’t be tidy…but I think it might be interesting and I can pretty much promise it won’t the “same old, same old” when it comes to Genesis.
And now the BIG NEWS…Kids Table is back in action this week! Whew…who do you think is looking forward to that more; the kids or the parents? Don’t answer that!
Also, I think we’ve officially started to have coffee ready in the mornings. I have a pretty good idea who is looking forward to that the most.
We’ll gather at Creative Manitoba – 4th floor, 10:30 a.m. Ignore the sign in the elevator insisting that Creative is on the 3rd floor. That only applies to normal people.
