Last week Monday we started a conversation about sex work and the question of how the South African legal system should respond to the industry and related activities. This is because tomorrow (Tuesday 31st of January) is the closing date for public comment around the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Bill of 2022 that seeks to repeal legislation that criminalizes sex work. Some of the issues that came out of last week’s discussion were around the language used to define sex workers and also the labelling of the profession. Focus: The National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) is a regulatory body of the home building industry. It was established in 1998 in accordance with the provisions of the Housing Consumers Protection Measures Act, 1998 (Act No. 95 of 1998). Its mandate is to protect the interests of housing consumers and to ensure that builders comply with the prescribed building industry standards as contained in the Home Building Manual.

The Department of Science and Innovation signed a collaboration agreement with the National Department of Human Settlements to identify key problem areas in the housing delivery value chain that could be addressed through technology and innovation.

The proposed project is aligned to some of the key objectives of the White Paper on Science and Technology which prioritises the circular economy which identifies systematic changes to move towards low waste, and resource efficient society through major changes to the methods of production and consumption.

Focus: The Brother Moves On is a movement that is uncomfortable in the world of reference.” Perhaps this, too, explains the band’s sound – part jazz, part rock, part alternative. Their many influences culminate in something raw and eclectic. Founded by vocalist and songwriter Siya Mthembu, the group has been on the South African music scene for close to 10 years.

Most recently, the band came together to present their newest album $/he Who Feeds You...Owns You(link is external), which was released on indie label Native Rebel Recordings. There is a feeling of urgency in some of the compositions, a tension that is propelled by voices, guitar, drums and bass. The horn lines add colour and sophistication, offering a response to a call to action.

Focus: South Africa is facing an almost 300 000 housing backlog. One of the objectives of the partnership is also to assess social acceptance of 3D-printed houses.

The University of Johannesburg has done extensive research to evaluate the long-term policy implications of this technology within the South African sustainable human settlements context. It has also examined the cost-benefit analysis of adopting this

technology as an option to increase the speed of delivering houses.

The latest coming out of the DRC is an eyewitness video, shows that Rwandan forces fired at a fighter jet from Democratic Republic of Congo. The footage, which could not be immediately verified, purported to show the incident on Tuesday amid tensions between the neighbours over a rebel insurgency. Rwanda's government alleges the military plane violated their airspace in Rubavu, across the border from the Congolese city Goma.
