As we celebrate #WorldRadioDay2025, we wanted to have a discussion on licensing of radio stations and how do we create pathways for the growth of the industry. Radio has played a very historical role in enhancing our democracy. Looking back, do we have a good story to tell? According to Icasa, there are 209 community broadcasting licences, 35 low power sound licences, 27 commercial and 15 public broadcasting licences that have been issued.

We can’t shy away from the challenges facing community radio stations from financial management, over prescription of licensing requirements from ICASA, restricted access to commercial market and many others. 22% of our population rely on
community radio stations to access to critical information and creates a sense of belonging with the communities by tailoring local content based on their linguistic needs. This year we are entering 31 years of our democracy and one wonders whether
radio is growing fast enough in this country?

Social Cohesion is essential to building a nation. While it seeks to address exclusion and inequality, it also needs to build integration among communities that consider the following aspects: Inclusion; National identity;

Belonging; Trust; Social relationships; Participation; Equality; and

Legitimacy. In a recent Social Cohesion Index conducted by the Inclusive Society Institute, it showed that signs of improvement where the wealthier provinces showed lower social-cohesion levels. Limpopo led in social cohesion with 56.5 points and KwaZulu-Natal recording the lowest score for social cohesion with 49.6 points.

As we prepare for national dialogue, we have brought together a panel that will deliberate on the following questions: What responsibility do we have to build Social cohesion? What are the values we need to set to building integrated communities? How do we become a nation where diverse people unite and harness unity from thought to action?

The 5th of February kicked off the beginning of the 125th anniversary celebrations of Charlotte Maxeke. This morning, Transnet National Port Authority (TNPA) and it's partners will sign two strategic terminal operator agreements that will develop liquified natural gas import terminal and bulk liquid terminal in South Africa. This new LNG terminal will provide receiving, storage, marine bunkering, truck loading, regasification & gas transmission pipeline services to our customers on a long term basis. The Zululand Energy and FFS Tank Terminals will also contribute to the Just Transition programme, which aims to introduce at least 6,000 MW of gas-to-power projects to meet the country’s limited and depleting energy supply.
