Small businesses often disregard the importance of keeping their data safe.   According to our guest, the AVERAGE data breach ends up costing a company over $8 million in lost revenue, fines, attorney costs, and lost customers.   Here's another fact - according to a poll, 70% of IT professionals feel that their companies will be breached on average 5 times this year alone!    

So what can businesses do to mitigate their risk?   It all starts with the weakest link - your employees.

Dovell Bonnett has been creating computer security solutions for 25 years. Many people are afraid to go back to work because they feel unsafe in their work places.  I recall hearing people who worked at meat packing plants and how scared they were to be shoulder to shoulder with fellow workers and how many Covid cases and deaths were attributed to the meat packing industry.   While our country is greatly improving the Covid numbers, there is still a lot of stressed out people. 

Our guest today is a Florida Board-Certified Addictions Professional (CAP); Internationally Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (ICADC); a certified health coach (Villanova College of Nursing); an Approved Training Provider through the Florida Certification Board; member, Florida Association and National Association of Drug Court Professionals. He is Chair of the Florida Association of Recovery Residences (FARR), and a Board Member with the Alliance for Addiction Solutions (AAS).

He has previous experience as the Executive Director of residential substance abuse treatment centers in Florida and served on the board of several homeless coalitions and other community organizations. Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome Powell, gave an interview a couple days back.  He gave a warning that our economy is going to take some time to recover and that he feels unemployment will hit historic levels equal or greater than the Great Depression.  He went on to mention that 40% of people who make under $40,000 annually are now unemployed.   People who were just hired before the pandemic were the first ones to be let go.   Food banks are passing out record levels of food to families who are in desperate need.

Business owners are feeling the pinch and many are thankful to finally be open – even if it IS on a limited basis.    Many businesses are still closed and the prognosis is tough for those businesses that rely on lots of people – it doesn’t look like things are going to get back to normal for quite some time.

And…. People will continue to get sick and die until we can get vaccines.

Things seem to really be broken.

But is “broken” always a bad thing?    

This episode is all about opening our eyes and trying to see that it sometimes takes something to break in order to have a breakthrough.   People and businesses may be able to be in a better position in the long run, or they may end up going backwards and closing their business or filing bankruptcy.
