THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST episodes

  • Matt Skinner

    Matt Skinner

Before jumping right into the intro for this week’s episode, Carly and I want to remind everyone that with next weekend being a “holiday weekend” there won’t be a new episode released.  So, we’ll hit you with something new the following weekend.

Matt Skinner is a name I’d heard several times from several folks during my days of traveling around and playing music.  While I’d never met Matt prior to this interview, I was a huge fan of Matt’s song “One Left in the Chamber” co-written with Canadian Country Singer-Songwriter, Corb Lund.

During this interview you’re gonna hear some hilarious stories from Matt’s past escapades touring Europe as well as what he’s up to now out in Fort Collins, Colorado.  There’s new music coming from Matt and his band soon and he speaks about it towards the end of this episode.

So, kick back and relax and be prepared to laugh a little throughout this one.

Here comes Episode #92 of The Troubadour.

All of Matt’s social media links, music and merch can be explored by going to his website at https://www.mattskinnerband.com/

    Hope you enjoy the episode!

Before the age of 20 Mike wrote The Everclear Song that Roger Creager later turned into a hit and is now a mainstay in Creager’s live shows.

Mike and I met for the first time many years ago at the historic Cheatham Street Warehouse and I’ve been wanting to have him as a guest on the podcast ever since the beginning.  Well, we’ve finally got it done.

  • Kyle Nix

After years of playing fiddle for the Turnpike Troubadours, Kyle Nix has now taken on the role of a front man with the release of his own project and new album “Lightning On The Mountain & Other Short Stories”.  The record is already making waves in the scene and receiving kudos from many of his peers.

In the studio Kyle used most of the Troubadours as his backing band so the cohesion and familiarity between players was a plus, but as you’ll hear, this isn’t a spin-off of the band.  It’s definitely a beast of its own.

Kyle grew up in Oklahoma and found the fiddle in his hands fairly early in life.  It eventually led to him studying under fiddle legend, Byron Berline.  After some serendipitous events, Kyle found himself sharing a house in Stillwater, Oklahoma with Troubadours front man Evan Felker and sitting in with them at shows when he wasn’t gigging with another group.  Eventually, Kyle joined the Troubadours full-time.

This may be Kyle’s first foray into running his own ship musically, but as you’ll probably realize while you listen to the episode, this is most likely the tip of the iceberg with a lot more to come.

So, kick back and relax with your favorite tumble full of chilled bourbon, or whatever else you drink, and enjoy our visit with Mr. Kyle Nix!

  • Cory Morrow - Texas Troubadour

Once again, we’re brining you guys a stellar episode today.  I’ve been a long-time fan of Texas Troubadour, Cory Morrow. Way back in my college days when I first heard his iconic songs like Texas Time Travelin, Nashville Blues and Big City Stripper it was simply hard not to like Cory’s music.

Cory’s high energy shows and hell-raising reputation on and off stage in his early days were all part of the package.  In this episode I was really impressed with Cory’s transparency about his early days and we actually talked a lot about maturing in one’s career and looking back and wishing we might have done a few things different.  But that’s kinda what Cory is all about: truth, honesty and holding nothing back; the good and the bad.

In the interview I actually get to retell Cory a story about how after a show once in Manhattan, KS he handed me his guitar and let me play him one of my songs and how special of a moment that was to a totally green and aspiring wannabe at the time.

Cory is the real deal folks.  He holds nothing back.  His music and songs come from a deep place within him and his heart.  I had a lot of respect for the guy before this interview and now that has only deepened.

Cory’s a true Christian family man and you can witness this during his livestream “Morrow Monday’s” that you all need to check out.  His kiddos are usually part of the broadcasts and frankly, are just pretty damn cute…Oh, and Cory’s musical performances are pretty great too!

So here we go with episode #79 of The Troubadour featuring our conversation with Cory Morrow.

All of Cory’s social media links, music and merch can be explored by going to his website at www.corymorrow.com

  • Sunny Sweeney

Born in Houston, TX and later living in Austin, Sunny Sweeny spent her formative college years at Southwest Texas State.  While in college Sunny soon felt her free-spirit calling.  So, she made the move to New York City to take a break from school.  After the New York City experience had ran its course, she moved back to Texas, finished school, and started a band.

She put out her first album in 2006 and for the last 14 years she’s became a female juggernaut in the world of Country Music.  She’s toured all over the world including successful tours in Europe and by the middle of 2017 she’d already made her 50th appearance on the Grand Ole Opry.

Sunny’s highly anticipated new album, Trophy is full of songs that are simply gems.  My personal favorite Sunny Sweeny song is called “Poet’s Prayer”.  It will resonate deeply with anyone who’s ever done time in the music business as well as fans of traveling troubadours.  Here’s the link to the YouTube video of Poet’s Prayer.

She has a bright past and what appears to be only a brighter future in Country Music with the release of Trophy.

So here we go with episode #78 of The Troubadour featuring our conversation with Sunny Sweeney.

All of Sunny’s social media links, music and merch can be explored by going to her website at www.sunnysweeney.com

  • Blaine Younger

Blaine Younger took his passion for music all the way to Nashville soon after he graduated from Kansas State University.  However, after a short stint in music city he made his way back to his home state of Kansas to pursue a career as a performer.  He soon gained some well-deserved notoriety, especially in western Kansas as he was getting some airplay on the Country Bull Y102 in Hays, KS.

After honing his craft as a performer, Blaine started focusing more on his songwriting.  He ended up winning a NSAI songwriting competition which earned him a recording session in Nashville and meetings with several heavy hitters.  After the success of winning the contest he was reinvigorated to chase his dream in Nashville and soon he moved back to music city with his wife and 2 twin boys in tow.

Blaine is now writing multiple times a week with other songwriters and continues to seek out a publishing deal.  I admire his determination and work ethic in a town full of talent.

So here we go with episode #77 of The Troubadour featuring our conversation with singer-songwriter, Blaine Younger.

  • Kaitlin Butts

I’ve always been a fan of ladies with auburn hair, and when you combine auburn hair with a beautiful voice and top-notch songwriting, you end up with Oklahoma native and rising singer-songwriter in the scene, miss Kaitlin Butts.

Carly and I really enjoyed our visit with Kaitlin and were glad we could finally make it happen.  Kaitlin and I had been playing email tag for months as we tried to get her scheduled as a guest on the show.

Let’s just say I was having a little trouble with my podcast email account for about 2 months and when I finally was able to hack back into the account, I noticed I’d missed email responses from her and several other artists.  So, let me use this time to apologize to anyone who responded to or wrote me an email, never to get a prompt response.  I believe it’s all been rectified now and [email protected] is now fully operational again.

During this interview, Kaitlin reported that she was sheltering in place at her mother’s house but just like all other artists, you can tell she’s ready to get back out on the road and performing for her fans.

She’s also recently started a cameo account, so if you would like a private message, song performance or birthday wish from Kaitlin, directly to you or whomever you chose, just go to cameo.com/kaitlinbutts .
