  • The Statesboro Revue Frontman - Stewart Mann

On today’s show, Carly and I get to visit with Stewart Mann; front-man and primary songwriter for The Statesboro Revue out of New Braunfels, TX.  Along with being somewhat of a visionary when it comes to his music, Stewart’s gears are always turning, but we’ll get to that in just a second.

Formed in 2008, The Statesboro Revue, can be described as a groove oriented, old school southern rock and roll band, with a heap of soul and a dash of swampiness.  In 2009, Rolling Stone Magazine noted that the Statesboro Revue performance was a highlight at South by Southwest.

On the Troubadour Carly and I get to visit with tons of great artists and just down right good people.  This interview with Stewart reinforced that, and he’s definitely a guy I’d just like to sit down and have a beer with.

So, let me say a little bit about what kind of a person Stewart is, on top of being such a great artist with his velvety soulful voice.

During this time of pandemic in our country, Stewart has recently created I HEART TEXAS ARTS.  The goal with I HEART TEXAS ARTS is to provide financial assistance, mental well-being checklists, and life-coaching for those in need.

He and Wade Bowen teamed up on the song, “Sinner, Saint, S.O.B.” with proceeds from the song to help fund the I HEART TEXAS ARTS project.  Please go stream the song and call your radio station to request it.  If you want to contribute to the project please email [email protected].

  • David Adam Byrnes

David Adam Byrnes story is the quintessential one of somebody chasing their dream of stardom in Country Music.  Right after high school he packed up and moved to Nashville ready to take on the world.  However, he quickly realized that he probably wasn’t going to be an overnight success.

So, he started gutting it out and grinding in the Honky-Tonks on Broadway.  Fortunately for him he ended up signing a publishing and artist development deal and was soon co-writing with people like Josh Thompson, Chris Young and Billy Montana.

As you’ll hear in the interview, he eventually ran into some snags with that deal and lawyers were soon involved.

However, the turning point in his career and baptism into Texas Country Music started when he teamed up with Trent Wilmon who produced his latest album which has lead to major success on the Texas Music Chart with hits like his single, “Beer Bucket List”.

I think it’s safe to say that David Adam Byrnes is here to stay in the genre and I expect some big things out of him well into the future.

So here we go with episode #74 of The Troubadour featuring our interview with David Adam Byrnes.

  • Mike and The Moonpies - Frontman Mike Harmeier

Mike and the Moonpies front man, Mike Harmeier was singing in bars by his early teens.  Don’t take my word for it though.  Just check out their song, “Steak Night at the Prairie Rose” and that should give you a pretty good idea of just who Mike Harmeier is.

Mike and the Moonpies were once known as Austin’s premier dancehall band with several residencies around town before more recently taking their show from coast to coast.

One of the things that sticks out to me about the Moonpies is their use of “twinning” on steel and lead guitar on several of their songs.  If you don’t know what twinning is, never fear.  We discuss it a little further in depth in the episode.

Their latest record, recorded at world famous, Abbey Road studios in London entitled Cheap Silver and Solid Country Gold is chock full of great songs and if you haven’t downloaded it yet, I highly encourage it.

So here we go with episode #73 of The Troubadour featuring our interview with Mike Harmeier, frontman of Mike and the Moonpies.

  • Randall King

Randall King is yet another one on the long list of great artists hailing from West Texas.  While Randall isn’t necessarily a newcomer to Red Dirt and Texas Country Music, I have to admit I was relatively unfamiliar with his music and career until about a year ago.  And, when Wade Bowen brought up Randall in one of our first episodes, I knew I’d better dig a little deeper.

As a “song” guy, the first impression I always try to get from an artist I’m unfamiliar with, is the quality of their songs and how well they are written.  Granted some people have had great careers simply by singing other people’s songs well.  When you have a great voice, a charismatic personality and a powerful live show, it doesn’t really matter if you aren’t a great writer.  You’ll inevitably be pitched good songs that’ll work for you.  However, when you have all of the things, I just mentioned PLUS songwriting talent, I will instantly will become a fan and a cheerleader for you.  Randall King is one of those artists that in my mind, is the total package.

He’s got a great voice and delivery, but his songwriting ability is also a part of the mix.  The songs he’s writes and puts out are hooky and quite simply, just damn good tunes.

Say what you want about Country Superstar Garth Brooks, but he agrees with me.  Garth cut one of Randall’s songs called “The Road I’m On” for his upcoming album and says this about Randall, “Everybody always asks me, who are the new people that you’re looking at coming up. Guys, I’m going to tell you right now, this kid right here, Randall King. All I can say is, sweet guy, good guy, hell of a writer, hell of a songwriter … This is what country music is all about for me.”

Well, what else can I say after that?  Here comes Episode #69 of The Troubadour Podcast featuring our new buddy, Randall King!

  • Kevin "Frenchie" Sciou of Frenchie's Blues Destroyers

On this episode Carly and I get to have a great conversation with Kevin “Frenchie” Blues of the guitar driven blues/rock duo, Frenchies Blues Destroyers.

The 2nd half of this two-piece is drummer, Brother Pete Coatney.

Frenchie and Brother Pete have both been long-time members of Jack Ingram’s band.  After years of just being the lead guitar player for Jack, Frenchie starting writing his own songs. Brother Pete liked what he heard and encouraged Frenchie to start performing them, and the duo was born.

After an inaugural gig in Dallas’s Deep Ellum the destroyers knew they had something.  Now, whenever they aren’t busy backing up Jack, Frenchie and Brother Pete are melting off new faces everywhere they can.

Frenchie, who earned that nick-name from Jack Ingram, also has a truly inspirational back story.

Growing up in France and being a fan of American and English Rock and Blues music, Frenchie decided coming to the states was a must for him.  So, in 2001, with nothing more than a backpack, a guitar and a couple hundred bucks, Frenchie stepped off a plane in L.A. and put his feet on American soil for the first time.  Within just a few weeks some good luck came his way and, Frenchie was befriended by Waylon Jenning’s son Shooter.  After he saw Frenchie’s guitar playing talent, Shooter quickly offered him the lead guitar role in his band at the time, Stargunn.

As you’ll hear in the interview, Frenchie’s dealings with immigration over the years has been quite a challenge but we’re happy to announce that as of 2016 Frenchie is now a legal citizen of the United States.  Once again, I’m amazed at the names that come up in our interviews, but as you’ll hear, Frenchie had some major help in getting letters of support along his immigration journey from folks like Waylon Jennings, Jack Ingram and believe it or not, Metallica lead singer, James Hetfield!  So here we go:  Episode #68 of the Troubadour Podcast is coming at you featuring our newest friend, Frenchie!  Enjoy!

  • Johnny Hiland - Chicken Pickin' Royalty

Hey everybody – welcome to Episode # 66 of The Troubadour Podcast.  We’ve got a great interview for you today.  Anyone who knows anything about the greatest guitar players to ever live are familiar with names in the Rock wold like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Albert Lee.  If you move on over to the Country Genre names like Vince Gill, Brent Mason, Steve Wariner and Ricky Skaggs come to mind.  Our guest on today’s episode has played with ever single one of those guys I’ve just listed as well as other notable guitar freaks like Joe Bonamassa, Ted Nugent and Sammy Hagar.

Johnny Hiland was born in the state of Maine with an eye condition called Nystagmus making him legally blind from birth.  However, that disability hasn’t stopped Johnny from becoming one the world’s best guitar players alive today.  Moving to Nashville in the mid-90s, Johnny quickly gained a reputation around music city as a beast with a guitar in his hands.

While he can proficiently play 22 different instruments, Johnny’s simply an expert at “Chicken Pickin’” on his Johnny Hiland JH6 signature guitar made by Keisel Custom Guitars.

While this episode featuring Johnny is a bit of a departure from the Texas Country / Red Dirt vein we are usually deep within in this podcast, towards the end of the interview you’ll hear Johnny give major props to the music coming out of the Texas / Red Dirt Scene and even mentions one of my biggest inspirations, Pat Green by name.

So, here we go folks.  Episode #66 of The Troubadour Podcast featuring one the best guitar players and nicest guys to ever walk God’s earth, Mr. Johnny Hiland.

  • Drew Fish

    Drew Fish

Drew Fish comes from a musical family and was hanging out with legends in the Texas Music Scene like producer Lloyd Maines before he even considered a career in music.

After being called on-stage to help Cory Morrow sing one of his signature tunes, “Drink One More Round”, Drew knew he was hooked on music.

Drew’s current record, “Wishful Drinkin’” is his first full-length album and he’s a co-writer on almost every track on the record.  Notable co-writers, Tommy Conners and Byron Hill lend their prowess to several of the songs as well.  Tommy and Byron have had cuts with huge acts including George Strait, Kenny Rogers, Kenny Chesney, etc.…you get the picture.  Drew even has a duet with legendary Nashville artists, Pam Tillis on this record on his current radio single, “Every Damn Time.”

Along with chasing a career as an artist, Drew also helps put on the semi-annual Drew Fish Band Songwriter’s Retreat.  As you’ll hear in the interview, I’m now on a very long wait list of folks wanting to attend. It sounds like a complete blast!
