THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST episodes

  • Jeremy Watkins

Today on the podcast we’re interviewing one of the best fiddlers and harmony singers in the Texas and Red Dirt Music scene.  Jeremy Watkins played for years with Jason Boland and The Stragglers, Stoney Larue and a long list of others.

I got to know Jeremy clear back in the year 2002 when I hired him to play fiddle and sing harmonies on my first record.  He went on to join me on other recording project and for my money, he’s one of the best harmony singers out there.

After taking some time off from the road, Jeremy went on to get his degree in engineering along with being a dad to two beautiful little girls.  In fact, after the interview we got to talk with the little ladies and here about their Halloween costumes which was very cute as well.

Jeremy introduced me to a lot of folks in the industry on my recording trips to Texas in the early 2000s and I really appreciate his friendship.

So here we go with this week’s episode of The Troubadour featuring my buddy, Jeremy Watkins.

  • Megan Vaughan - Wine Workout Chick and Radio Personality

I got teamed up on in this episode by two wonderful women who also happen to be great friends.  My co-host Carly Evans and Megan Vaughan met years ago and worked together in Manhattan, KS at a radio station prior to moving on and up in both of their careers.

Megan Vaughan has quite possibly one of the most refreshing attitudes and personalities I’ve met in a long long time.  You’ll understand what I’m talking about as you listen.

Not only does Megan have her own business/career as a radio personality but through a few of her viral videos, she’s now sometimes referred to as the “Wine Workout Chick”.

On a whim one day, Megan filmed a video of her working out while incorporating sips of wine, and the rest is history.

Oh, and she’s also going to be a member of Carly’s wedding party next fall!

This was a really cool interview I think you’ll all enjoy.

I’ve linked a couple of her videos below.

  • Terry McBride

This is a momentous episode for us here at The Troubadour!  You are about to listen to episode #100 of a podcast that just started out as an idea in my vast and expansive cranium several years ago.  I’m truly humbled by how many great artists and individuals have agreed to come on the podcast and share their personal stories and experiences with us.  So, to all previous guests on the show, Thank You!

Very little of the success The Troubadour has experienced would have been possible without my wonderful co-host Carly Evans agreeing to join me on this adventure.  I released about a dozen episodes on my own in the early days of this thing and quickly knew if I wanted it to morph into something greater, the ol skipper would have to make a call to the bullpen.  Thankfully, Carly enthusiastically jumped onboard.  Along with her gracious personality and professional skills as an on-air talent, Carly brought real credibility to what we’re doing here, so I can’t thank her enough for partnering with me.

I also need to give a shout out to the various sponsors who have helped me cover the costs of producing this show.  While we’re always looking for more ways to pay the bills and other sponsors for the show, I especially would like to thank Brad and everyone at Kansas Territory Brewing.  They gave us the shot in the arm early on when we needed it right out of the gate and I won’t forget that.

Finally, a big thanks goes out to you, the listeners and subscribers to the podcast who make what we are doing all worth it.

In this special one hundredth episode, we get to interview one of the most successful songwriters over the past 20 years in country music.  He’s also had a major impact on several of the past guests we’ve had on the show.  Terry McBride is a native Texan who was surrounded by music at a very early age.  By the time he was in his teens he was touring with his Dad’s band.  As his career progressed, he was performing with people like Delbert McClinton and ended up going on to form his own band that found national success in McBride and The Ride. In more recent years he found himself playing bass and writing songs for the most successful duo in country music history, Brooks & Dunn.

I think you’ll find this visit with Terry everything we hoped it would be for a special 100th episode.  So kick back, grab a cool one and enjoy.  Here comes episode #100 of The Troubadour featuring our new buddy, Terry McBride.

  • Clay Hollis

Today’s episode features Texas Country Music artist Clay Hollis.

Clay was born in the Rio Grande Valley and raised in San Antonio.  Clay decided to forego the‍ typical life of going to college and settling down in a comfortable job to pursue his dream of being a country music artist.

A music fan as long as he can recall, Clay’s passion for performance developed at a very young age. He released his self-titled, debut EP in 2017, which featured the single, “Look Who’s Hurting Now” followed up by his latest EP “Honky Tonk Highway”.

    ‍
Hollis’ family and close-knit group of friends strongly support his musical ambitions as you’ll hear him reiterate in this episode.  Clay has also recently made a foray into helping operate a recording studio and production company.

You can find everything Clay Hollis as well as follow him on his social sites by going to his website at www.clayhollis.com.

Here comes Episode #99 of The Troubadour, featuring Clay Hollis.

    Marc Methot – CARtoons Magazine

We are off the beaten path this week with the creator of automotive enthusiast magazine, CARtoons that I used to read as a kid.  But, it’s not really a magazine either; it’s more of a comic book.

CARtoons magazine was out of publication for years until Marc brought it back to life.

You can find out everything CARtoons, by going to www.cartoonsmag.com .

  • Actor Barry Corbin

Carly and I have got to talk to some incredible people and artists through this podcast and today is another notch in that gunstock.

While this guest isn’t necessarily tied to music, he is a Texas artist in his own right.

Actor Barry Corbin has had an impressive career spanning decades.  One of his most recent roles that our audience would be familiar with is as Dale; a cranky, hard of hearing veterinarian on Netflix’s The Ranch.  He’s also appeared in Better Call Saul, Northern Exposure, and several movies on the big screen including Urban Cowboy, No Country For Old Men, and a long list of others.

However, my favorite role of Barry’s thus far was that of his portrayal of Roscoe Brown; July Johnson’s hapless deputy in the Larry McMurtry classic, Lonesome Dove.

During the interview we were also excited to find out that Barry will have an upcoming role in one of the most popular American Television Series running today in Yellowstone.

I guarantee you, when I first had the idea for The Troubadour, I had no idea it would lead to interviews like the one you are about to hear.  A big thanks goes out to my partner in crime on this show, Carly Evans, for setting up such a memorable interview.

Here comes Episode #97 of The Troubadour, featuring Actor Barry Corbin.

  • Brother Pete Coatney

This episode is the first of what we’re going to start referring to as the “Sidemen Series” on the podcast.  If you are a regular listener you know that our wheelhouse is interviewing frontmen and artists with their names on the album cover.  Well, behind all of those folks is usually a group of seasoned professional musicians helping them make the music they do.

We’ll unofficially start this series with undoubtedly the best dressed and most dapper man in the Texas Music scene and probably country music as a whole.  Brother Pete Coatney has been the drummer for Jack Ingram for the last 26 years and has been half of the duo Frenchie’s Blues Destroyers for the last 8 years.  If you’ll recall, Frenchie was our guest on episode #68 of the podcast.  Frenchie has a remarkable story in his own right so I highly suggest checking out that episode.

Pete Coatney has played and recorded not only with Jack Ingram and Frenchie, but has also done stints with other notables including Billy Joe Shaver, Chris Knight, and genius guit-steel player, Junior Brown.

As you’ll hear in this interview, Pete’s fashion style and talent as a drummer is only complimented by his warm personality which made for another great interview for us and we are glad to add this episode to our body of work.

Here comes Episode #96 of The Troubadour, featuring Brother Pete.

  • Garrett Owen

Welcome to this week’s episode of The Troubadour.  Imagine, if you will, being born an American citizen but then spending the majority of your youth in a third world country in Africa.  Imagine if spending time in the Serengeti watching all of the wild creatures and animals that Africa has to offer was maybe just your version of a typical weekend as a kid.  This is the true-life experience of today’s guest, Garrett Owen.  The son of a missionary, Garrett had what most Americana Singer-Songwriters would consider a pretty amazing and unique childhood.

Coming back stateside in his late teens, Garrett ended up studying music at South Plains College in Levelland, TX and is now grinding away at a career as a professional musician.

This episode is another example of why I love what Carly and I are doing so much with this podcast.  There is so much more to these artist’s life-stories that just simply can’t be grasped by listening to their music, catching a live show or two, or by reading a bio on their respective websites.  I have to say Garrett’s history is one of the most unique we’ve had yet.

Here comes Episode #95 of The Troubadour, featuring Mr. Garrett Owen.

All of the Garrett’s social media links, music and merch can be explored by going to his website at https://www.garrett-owen.com/

  • Chad Cooke Band

What do you get when you combine great musicians, killer harmony vocals and great songs?  Well, you get one of the fastest-rising acts in the Texas Music scene:  The Chad Cooke Band.

Their song, “Whatever it Takes” set a record as the longest charting single on Texas Radio at 43 weeks.  And I for one expect great things out of their latest single, Cowboy’s Cowgirl.  It’s simply a damn good song.

Today’s episode is also a first for the podcast in that 3 of the members of the Chad Cooke Band joined us for this interview making for some lively discussion.

After only a few minutes it was easy to see why this band is so cohesive and driven to succeed.

Here comes Episode #94 of The Troubadour.

  • Corby Schaub

Hey everybody, welcome to The Troubadour!  I’m super excited for today’s episode.  Today we’re visiting with a guy I’ve wanted to have on the podcast since we started this thing.  Corby Schaub is a multi-talented instrumentalist, studio player and producer I’ve been a fan of for a long time.  So much so that I’d actually tried to hire Corby to play on my last record back in 2013.

Corby has had quite a career in the music business.  He toured through the rise of Ryan Bingham’s career and still plays with Walt Wilkins and the Mystiqueros among others.  He’s been in major motion pictures and has hung out with actors including Jeff Bridges, aka, The Dude.

Make sure and go to corbyschaub.com to see what he’s up to now.

Here comes Episode #93 of The Troubadour.

All of Corby’s social media links, music and merch can be explored by going to his website at https://www.corbyschaub.com/
