“You can’t win the war with the world, if you can’t win the war with your mind”
Jason and Joey are back with another episode of the Grind, this week’s guest is Alex Vorobieff, business alignment coach and author of the business strategy book ‘Transform your company, a book for frustrated business owners’. But first Jason’s book club, the reading for this week was; Dr Joe Dispenza’s ‘Breaking the habit of being yourself’. A combination of neuroscience, brain chemistry, biology and genetics into an empowering philosophy of choosing your own reality. The guys discuss some of the ideas in the book, grappling with your subconscious and the importance of negotiating with yourself.
“When you aren’t getting any negative feedback, that’s a bad sign”.
The first subject the guys present to Alex is about how to live intentionally and not to be a passenger in your own life. Alex describes his experiences with feedback, or lack thereof and how a focus on feedback is the best approach for a cohesive company. He also talks about the reasons you don’t see effective feedback protocols in place in most companies. Jason asks about the value of questioning “am I the problem” in terms of leadership, Joey brings up why it is always good to internalise feedback and Alex unpacks why all of this is a painful process and why you should attempt to engage the executive brain over the amygdala.
“If you give me a stick, I’m not gonna hit you with it”.
Alex begins the next segment rendering an idea Jason brings up about the importance of transparency in leadership and why every member of a team wants to be heard. He also discusses two very interesting anecdotes about the recovery of the Ford motor company and Hillary Clintons 2016 election campaign. These two stories bring up the importance of trust and the title theme of this episode; you can’t outsource vision. The idea being, leaders should embody the core values of a company, this acts as an orienting force for every person in a supporting role. The Guys discuss this idea further until Jason breaks his internet. When he returns they talk more about the practicalities of implementing the ideas they have discussed, and some of the real-world situations that it relates to. Alex finishes up with a little insight on living a liberated life, and the gang bids a farewell till next week. Keep on Grinding.

It’s another unsupervised Joey and Jason special this week, not ones to be deterred, the boys continue down the rabbit hole of ideas with conviction. Jason quickly realises that having forgotten about the podcast until the night before isn’t to bad if Joey can remember with only 5 minutes to go. The last-minute wonder reveals that, on top of his class ‘lead gen for champions’, he is working on a new coaching course called ROC (resiliency, opportunity and connection).
Jason tells a story about his dogs, his daughter, a very muddy kitchen floor, and the importance of not losing your cool. To which Joey expands on towards the idea of self-awareness. The guys give a small recap of last week’s episode with Kathryn Sutherland and Joey and Jason try to decipher the difference between the UK and Great Britain.
“The key to sustained happiness is through disciplining your behaviour”.
The meat of this episode is exploring the idea that discipline equals freedom, and the guys manage to summate the idea succinctly to mean that, you must sacrifice your immediate joy for a deeper more meaningful happiness, at a later date. Joey and Jason talk about the fact that discipline often boils down to abstinence of pleasure. Joey remarks that making disciplined decisions is easier if you build them on a foundation of ‘self-love’ (not that kind). Jason makes the observation that personal responsibility is the best route to conflict resolution and happiness, and he ties it in nicely with his story from earlier in the episode.
For a final insight, joey explains how putting all of this into practice is difficult but when you do it properly it helps you see other people’s perspectives. Jason sets the homework this week, and in his words “Stop being so judgemental…..knock it off”.
A big thanks to all the listeners of the grind.

This week’s episode could have been a depressing one, if not for Kathryn Sutherland’s uncompromising optimism. In the depths of the treatment for her stage 2 breast cancer, she joins Joey and Jason to talk about the roller coaster of surviving with one of the world’s most deadly diseases.
“Let’s do the entire show with our eyes closed today”
Joey and Jason start off discussing how something as simple as having your emails open at the start of a podcast, can be catastrophically disruptive and distracting. A recent review of the podcast leads the boys to talk about the different levels of impact that people have in the world, and how no matter the quantity of the impact, as long as it’s positive, you are creating valuable change. Jason then reads one of Kathryn Sutherland’s blogs to introduce her interview.
“Does this haircut make me look like I have cancer”
Joey asks Kathryn to take us through her daily routine, and the difficulties that can arise around the things in your life that you take for granted. One of the familiar topics talked about on ‘The Grind’ is defining moments, usually viewing them from life’s rear-view mirror. Kathryn is in an ongoing defining moment, which gives her a unique perspective that she illustrates to Joey and Jason. A trope that occurs often in people who are going through adversity is gallows humour. Kathryn talks about her dark sense of humour and dealing with the awkwardness that talking about her condition can bring.
“This is my new normal”
Continuing the discussion, the guys scrutinise how a sense of mortality can cause you to lose your inhibitions. Kathryn also extrapolates on the importance of picking your battles and tackling things that are within your reach, when going through hard times. She describes how it felt to initially hear the news and how the hardest part (mentally) of the whole ordeal so far was the first 3 weeks from diagnosis to treatment plan, because of the unknown.
“I never asked, why did this happen to me”.
Towards the end of the interview Kathryn talks about the minimal body maintenance she is able to do because of the treatment, she also takes us through the chronology of her past and future chemo and surgical treatments. The trio then consider the perspective that can be gained from suffering in general, Kathryn explains how her situation has lead to a belief that people are mostly good but are afraid and Joey finishes up by articulating how you should always try and deal with the hand that you are dealt. Because really, what choice do you have.

Jumping straight back into ‘the grind’ after being on vacation can be difficult. Joey starts this episode by going over some of the difficulties that come with exiting holiday mode. Which Jason segues into discussing some of Joeys recent articles on atheism and rest, his fresh viewing of the film ‘I can only imagine’ and how it’s serendipitous that this week’s guest Jennifer Kern has expertise on all those subjects. After some quick thankyous to the listeners Jason jokes that he is now smoking, in an attempt to emulate joeys dulcet oratory tones. Then we jump into the interview.
“As spiritual beings we want to be seen and heard, valued and known”.
Jennifer Ally Kern is a Lead in Alignment consultant and coach, transformational speaker and an award-winning author. The guys waste no time in delving into the deep subjects, and begin by asking Jennifer her thoughts on why society feels less genuinely connected than ever, when we are more technologically connected than ever before? Jennifer elucidates the value hierarchy of different means of interaction and how authentic connections are often self-evident. Joey then points out the stark contrast that can occur when encountering the polar opposites of personality compatibility, Jennifer refers to the good extreme as ‘Soul recognition’. Opportunities for moments of ‘Soul recognition’ are hard to create but that leads into the discussion of ‘THRIVIESTA’ Jennifers new project.
“This is NOT a business event”
‘THRIVIESTA’ is an evening designed to create an open atmosphere of authentic interaction between people, without the constant spectre of professional networking and social pressures looming over it. Joey and Jason pick Jennifer’s brain about the methodology behind the event and having games and activities that allow people to act within a mindset of childlike openness. The event concludes with a dance party and Joey is very excited to show off his new moves, although Jason doesn’t seem convinced that Joey has actually mastered ‘The Floss’. This does lead to the group discussing the expected and inevitable awkwardness at regular networking events, and how most people try to force connections when they’re not there. Jennifer offers an ethos of focusing on the genuine connections as the business you seek will flow from them more naturally, as opposed to the connections that aren’t because the business tends to not flow from them at all. Joey explains his 20 minute technique for business card distribution at events and how it differs from most peoples “throwing star” technique.
In the next segment Jason introduces his hypothesis that modern social pressures have lead to a reduction in people’s ability to be natural around each other, which has lead to an increase in tribal behaviour and in turn an increased expectation to conform, which is a self-perpetuating pattern. In answering this, the group begin to discuss ‘the mask’ and how people create facades to face the world in place of their genuine selves. Joey proposes that the mask might be a necessity of operating in the modern world, but it should be taken of whenever possible. This subject takes the gang into a heady discussion of unconscious bias and group think, that they manage to present in a networking context. The topic concludes with a discussion on how children never seem to wear a mask and why THRIVIESTA is trying to capture that component at their events.
To finish up this episode Joey and Jason quiz Jennifer about the modern loneliness epidemic, how emojis are a poor substitute for actual emotional expression, the dangers of relying on social media for your interactions and what the best questions to ask people to show that you are listening are. Also Jason challenges the listeners to “take your mask of and go make a genuine connection”

“It’s not about the race, enjoy the training”
The boys start early this week, on the positive side of ‘Costa Rican time’. This week is a Joey and Jason special and despite being 61 episodes in, the technical difficulties are still rearing their ugly head. Prompting a quick Zoolander reference and a good laugh. Jason recaps his recent trip to Mexico and his subsequent battle with illness and general malaise. The later of which subsided with a walk on the beach and remembering that life is pretty good overall. Jason and Joey then discuss how people often spend a lot of time and energy chasing some transcendent moment, whereas if you pay attention you can find small moments of inspiration and clarity every day. Even something you are looking forward to, like a vacation can be an obstacle in noticing those small moments.
“Put your phone down! It’s not that difficult”
After Joey realises how much he says ‘here’s the thing’ and ‘it’s interesting how’. He jumps into a rundown of the ‘Soul Degree’ trip he took recently, An adventure inspired personal development program designed for men. Joey delves into the methodology the retreat takes and the main aims of the program, like being more present and aware. Jason and joey go discuss some of the benefits of the program, like all the candidates ‘self-selecting’, what this means for the group dynamic and the importance of being out in nature.
“The best leaders ask the best questions because they listen”
The guys find themselves on the familiar topic of leadership once again, When talking about the coaches at ‘Soul degree’ and how they are effective. Joey and Jason talk a little about the best way to tell if someone is really listening to you. Also they examine the fact that most people are terrified of awkward silences and how that plays a large part in stopping people from being genuinely attentive. In reviewing the trip Joey deliberates on the advantages of helping people figure things out themselves, instead of dogmatic instruction.
Towards the end of the show Jason and Joey peer into the future and approach some concepts that are taking hold in the current zeitgeist. Jason introduces the idea of energy management as opposed to time management and the benefits of working more in tune with your body. The guys also contend the superiority of a less rigorously regulated work schedule.
A big thanks to all the listeners of the grind.
