  • The Social Media Vortex with Gene Volpe

The Grind is back with episode 60 and guest Gene Volpe, founder of GDI Media, speaker and national marketing expert. Joey, Jason and Gene spend this episode outlining the benefits, pitfalls and how to properly engage with social media.

“Consistency compounds, and so does inconsistency”

After the guys discuss their sleep habits and learn that Gene works up to 2am most nights, Joey asks him to elaborate on how business owners can prevent being overwhelmed by social media. Gene elaborates on the importance of momentum, how you don’t have to post all the time, but it does help.

Jason then goes through some of the pitfalls of restricting yourself to short-term engagement on social media. This leads into a discussion on the importance of general social media literacy across industries, and how you should avoid being left behind. Also on the table is the dangers of licensing and why you should properly source your social resources.

Gene drops some sage data points on Jason and Joey about brand and logo recognition, and the necessity of repeat exposure to certain marketing points.

The next topic the group explores is the idea of quality vs quantity within social media. The importance of distinguishing yourself and setting yourself apart from the crowd via consistency, without creating a negative online persona. Gene postulates that the best way to quantify whether or not you are doing it right, is with monitoring of real world interactions, not analytics.

“The higher the monkey climbs up a tree, the more his ass is exposed”.

The previous topic leads into the group discussing the fact that sometimes, being ‘annoyingly’ exposed on social media. When people get fed if you saturate a social space with content. And how that bi-product of consistent content creation is less of a downside than you think and can actually become a positive. Basically haters are just another part of embracing the suck.

In the next exchange Gene covers why the social media space is not a place to be bashful. People tend to not post certain things out of a fear of being perceived as boasting. Whereas in reality posting those things can often have the effect of inspiring more people to do the same. On the other side of the same coin, Gene offers a reason why you should show vulnerability on your social media spaces. The idea being that social media has highlighted the fact that everyone is flawed. So when you see a perfect representation of someone on social media, you’re seeing a liar.

Finishing up on how using social media correctly can help you skip traditionally essential steps in networking/marketing, The boys have to cut it abruptly as Jason has to go on possibly the most dangerous grind…..the school run!.

  • Exploring Leadership with Dr James Kelley, Author of 'The Crucibles Gift'

“A good leader takes a little more than his share of the blame, a little less than his share of the credit.”

    - Arnold H. Glasow

This episode of ‘The Grind’ Features Dr James Kelley, author of ‘Crucibles Gift, 5 lessons from authentic leaders who thrive in adversity’. But before that discussion begins Joey and Jason have a little recap of the past weeks shows. They talk a little about growth from failure and skim some of the topics that are covered a little deeper with Dr Kelley and throw in some Matthew McConaughey quotes for good measure.

“It’s who you become, not who you are”

The interview with Dr Kelley starts with Joey posing the question, can you manufacture adversity in your life with the aim of self-betterment through overcoming that adversity. Dr Kelley then takes us through the advantages of mentally preparing for adversity, because no matter what it will find you, whether you are looking for it or not. He also explains why Interpreting difficulties in life is the key to gaining from them as opposed to seeing them negatively.

“You fail your way to success”

Joey and James then expand on how life experience becomes your coping mechanism when dealing with misfortune, and how looking back on to your negative experiences positively, can over time help you stop them adversely affecting your future. James Extrapolates this into the subject of millennials and the difficulties that emerge from being raised with the social media feedback loop.

In the next segment Joey picks Dr Kelley’s brain about the emergence of leaders. Joey talks about his time in the military and how moments of strife can cause those you least expect, to take up the reigns of leadership. The guys cover how being raised amongst adversity can lead to a more comfortable life and the pro’s and con’s of stoicism vs familiarity within a leadership role. The conversation turns to the subjective nature of a good leader and how it reflects the individual needs of those who follow.

Finishing up, Dr Kelley extolls the benefits of embracing the crucible and how the integrating self-awareness and compassion into your leadership philosophy is the best road to success.

  • RAW with Tanner Schweitzer

This week on the Grind, Joey and Jason are joined by Tanner Schweitzer, founder of RAW (recreation athletic wellness) and Medieval Rush, the longest running mud run in North Dakota.

After a short reminiscence on their high school sports careers Tanner gives us a rundown of ‘Medieval Rush’. the 5.1-kilometre mud run’s benefits and broad nature of it’s applicants. Tanner’s experiences with the mini ‘spartan challenge’ leads nicely into the guys talking about how fear of the unknown can lead to sitting on the side-lines in regret. And the negative mindset that entails

In the next segment Tanner explains how a car crash he had during his high school wrestling days changed his outlook on life. At first in a negative way, then after some personal realisations transformed into a catalyst for positivity.

“If your bad at something, jump into it”

Touching on the earlier theme of fear, the guys bounce around the idea of why tough guys don’t do yoga and why it is important to evolve in life, educate yourself and at least try to get past your fears. They also discuss whether if you can harness it will actually help you live life to a fuller extent, and the importance of being aware of something greater than yourself.

“People say wellness can be expensive, but think about how expensive illness is.”

The underlying theme of this episode is really about being proactive. The term Tanner uses is Pre-habilitation. The idea of pre-emptively changing your life before the negative repercussions of neglect rear their head. He talks about the difficulties certain personality types have when it comes to implementation of techniques, and the importance of starting slow.

The final topic of discussion is a general critique of modern approaches to exercise, which is ironic because the problem with the modern approach is that it is stuck in the past. The advances of science have not trickled down to education and thus our children have been led to believe falsehoods about the healthiest way to live. As Tanner says “We have become Mice chasing cheese”.

“Whether you are training for a sporting event, getting back into shape after a fitness lapse, or just looking for a fun and positive outlet, RAW and Tanner offer a unique approach to fitness for everyone.”

  • Discussion with Nova Wightman about her new book Awake and Aligned

"As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live." ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

In this weeks episode Joey and Jason welcome back Nova Wightman, owner of Go Within Life coaching, to the show. Auspiciously on the day of the launch of her new book ‘Awake and Aligned – how to navigate the human experience as a spiritual being’.

After Joey compliments Jason on his tan, the trio waste no time in delving into the aspects of Nova’s life that inspired her to write her book. And how that collage of ideas became a compulsion to create and provoke change

The discussion turns to the importance of mindset when encountering a new concept. And how different states of mind can leave you more open or closed to divergent ideas. Also they talk on the value of Nova’s ability to approach old concepts differently, and inject them with new enthusiasm and perspective, to create openness within the reader.

A Large focus of the analysis in this episode is about balancing chasing goals with play and rest. How an overcommitment to work all the time can have a detrimental effect on your overall productiveness, and how sometimes chasing just the opposite can lead to the results that you are perusing. Joey, Jason and Nova then consider how concepts of enthusiasm and negativity can become more of a choice, as you raise your consciousness level to a place above conflict, by embracing it.

Then after touching on stoicism briefly, the group proceed to refine the ideas contained within the book. They discuss the idea that firstly it can help you get into the ‘zone’ of openness and enthusiasm (no matter the context) more often. Secondly, and maybe more importantly, it can help you get back into it when you inevitably fall out of your optimal mindset.

”I cannot explain the amazing results I have seen in my life after working with Nova for just a few short months.  I have spent many thousands of dollars on self-help, therapists, coaches, programs etc but this has been by far the best investment I have ever made.  I have always known that my life is an “inside” job, and that what you think and believe creates your reality. But no one ever gave me the “formula” for how to actually do this before.   I finally understand what it means to let go of my story and experience the freedom that comes from that. I never could have done it without Nova’s loving support, wisdom and total faith in me.” ~ Pamela Vandervoort, The Dating for True Love Expert www.datingfortruelove.com

  • SAY WHAT?! with Jodee Bock

“Don’t ask questions that start with the word why…”

Get there by asking the how and the what.

Wassssuuuuup!? Jason and Joey are coming straight at you from the 1990’s, but fortunately the content is as fresh as ever.

Gracing us with her presence this week is Jodee Bock, founder of Bock’s Office Transformational Consulting. She boasts 15 years’ experience and an enviable repertoire of books, as well as a proud unbroken record, inspiring the Facebook community every morning since 2009.

Her new book ‘Say What’ most certainly gets Jason and Joey going. It may be tiny and ideal to carry with you, but don’t be fooled, the contents are ‘huge’.

The book was so ready to burst out of her it practically wrote itself and if you want to emulate her achievements then she has some sage advice… Get yourself some bath crayons.

We quickly learn from Jodee that life is not about wishful thinking. It’s all about Riskful Thinking.

Using the book as a source of inspiration, we are taken on a journey of thought provoking ideas, which begins by flipping the clichéd ‘what it is that you are grateful for’ on its head, asking instead ‘Who is grateful for you?’.

We should strive to be a giver and…

“Give what you most want.” – Jodee Bock

Discussion turns to why we should be solution seekers, not problem solvers. Tell someone what to do and it’s your solution, not theirs. They don’t need to own it and guess who gets the blame if it goes wrong? That’s right… you!

It may all be theoretical, but ask yourself… If you were the bravest version of yourself today, what would you be doing? You can’t do it? Screw that! What would it look like if you did, harness the power of visualisation and have fun playing the ‘what if’ game.

With that in mind… ‘What needs to change in your thinking to take that action?’

The key is to know how to make things important to us. Crack that one and then who knows, maybe one day Jason will hit the gym.

We are then treated to a snippet which, judging by Jason’s unbridled giggling, he suspects might resonate with Joey… ‘Be aware of the times you want to impress people with your brilliant knowledge. That’s a perfect time for a powerful question.’

A lively debate continues, driven by questions such as ‘Is this really all I think I deserve?’, ‘What’s your biggest challenge these days?’ and ‘What are you pretending not to know?’, before the inevitable march of time draws a curtain over the whole affair and we are left hoping for a second instalment.

Before leaving though, we are encouraged to think about why it is that everyone is so concerned about what people do. After all, it’s not about what you do, it’s about who you are.

    Oh yes folks…

The Grind is positive; The Grind is life.

If you have enjoyed (or NOT enjoyed) this episode, Jason and Joey would be grateful if you’d  consider leaving a review on iTunes.

  • Discussion with Michelle Weinstein, The Pitch Queen, about dealing with rejection!

This week The Grind welcomes The Pitch Queen herself, Michelle Weinstein. She’s a Sales Strategist, Entrepreneur, and Innovator. She has over 20 years of sales experience, selling everything from multi-million dollar homes to Paleo meatballs. Her achievements include raising over $1M dollars for her last company, landing contracts with major retailers such as Costco and The Vitamin Shoppe, and pitching her way onto ABC’s  Shark Tank.

Michelle reveals that her entrepreneurial tendencies began to show as far back as high school, where she saw an opportunity in the fact that ‘everyone has a pool in Phoenix’ and started a business teaching kids to swim in their own back yards. From Promo Girl to Cocktail Waitress to Retail Advisor it was clear she had a gift for selling. After a miserable couple of years in a safe, cubicle job in grey Seattle, she realised that it was time to answer her calling, go back to sunny Arizona and begin her sales career in earnest.

Joey playfully refers to this week as having been “REJECTION WEEK”; it’s a hot topic of conversation as lately he’s really been feeling the burn of those ‘No’s’. Michelle has great insight on how to manage that rejection through ‘detachment from the outcome’ and knowing your value’…

    “Rejection? I’m immune to it.”

But more than handling rejection, Michelle has tips on how to avoid those rejections in the first place; in particular, the bane of the sales person’s existence: The Disappearing Act.

“People disappear because we ALLOW them to disappear”

Join Jason, Joey and Michelle as they discuss how to be authentic and genuine in your sales conversations, failing forward, going above and beyond to avoid no-shows, biggest rejections, why punctuality can be so key…

“If you’re not going to respect me and my time, then you don’t DESERVE my time.”

…and why you should never ask, “How can I help you?”

Get some first hand experience of Michelle’s expertise and boost your sales with her 5 day series available at www.sellwithoutsleaze.com
