  • We Are All Completely in Control & Out Of Control with Gene Volpe

This episode of the Grind see's the return of Gene Volpe, founder of GVI media and one of Jason and Joey's favourite guests. But first the guys talk a little bit about the realities of seeking a flow state and how getting comfortable with 'the suck' is about upheaval of habitual behaviours. Joey speaks about how Gene's current struggles are perfectly parallel to how they describe the grind itself and how he expects this week's discussion to go. Spoiler alert, he's excited.

"Extreme ownership of everything you do is key"

The Conversation with Gene and the boys starts with the most important discussion of our time, what is the proper pronunciation of bagel? After a good laugh the guys get down to business. Gene gives us a rundown of some recent peaks and valleys in his life, how those effected his mentality and in turn how that affected his business and what he is doing to counteract it. This exploration touches on how it feels to live whilst striving for empowerment over your own life and simultaneously loosing control over other aspects of it. Joey talks about how fear plays into this mindset and how best to placate it.

"you are going to have peaks and valleys, that's a guarantee"

Joey continues to explore why it is important to maintain areas of control in your life, so when things happen that are out of your control it doesn't overwhelm you. This leads into the discussion about the miracle morning and how starting your day of strong can positively affect the whole day. The guys talk about how sleep plays a large role in this methodology, and how the only thing governing your life if you don't actively pursue these avenues is luck. In a similar vein the next topic is diet, also couched in the perspective of alleviating future suffering through pre-emptive maintenance. This is the main theme of this episode and the gang offers various inspirational anecdotes that inspire dedication to self-betterment.

"give yourself the best odds for success"

Jason brings up how humans psychologically associate things that are bad for you (alcohol, fatty foods etc) with happiness, and how that can form a mental roadblock for most people and impede their advances. Gene then give us some examples of positive rewards he reinforces in his mind to stop negativity from slowing him down. The next topic is expectations, the importance of not setting them to high and avoiding disappointment. Which surprise surprise Joey turns into talking about stoicism, but to be fair, it is always relevant. Gene closes with a little description about GVI media and how he benefits companies and individuals.

  • Why Starting Your Day at 70% is a Recipe for Disaster!

"If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change"

Wazaaa! It's episode 69 of the grind and the guys are going to bleed all the fun they can out of that 19 year old commercial. After the usual Pleasantries Joey and Jason Start this episode with a little recap of last week and then they jump straight into a conversation about entrepreneur Grant Cardone. The subject leads them to think about audience sizes and their appreciation for the ability to have an impact on their audience no matter how big. Joey talks about his first day after his detox, how everything seemed to come together even if things went wrong, even down to rediscovering an old smashmouth album. Joey attributes this to something called 'flow' and the guys extrapolate around that for a few minutes, discussing serendipity and whether it is actually joey's environment changing or his perception of it.

"The universe is like, welcome back Joey Torkildson"

Joey talks about his ongoing spiritual endeavours with Deepak Chopra and Oprah Winfrey's programmes, and the benefit he is seeing from following them. Jason relates this all back to energy and how positive changes can compound to create exponential improvement in your life. Jason also comments on how important finding balance within self-improvement is, to not push yourself so hard that you fail entirely. Joey expounds on this, discussing the counter intuitive nature of giving yourself a break so that you can achieve 100% output. The guys then talk a little about how rituals and habits can help you maintain a flow state. Joey and Jason then draw some comparisons from Michael Jordan, his approach to playing basketball at the highest level and what lessons can be learned.

"Life by design, not by default"

The next insight the guys give us is a technique from Adam Hurgenrother, life coach and real estate mogul. It's a lesson in responsibility and how to self-actualise based on information readily available to you about yourself. Joey speaks about the importance of not being a victim and how most people don't see it as a choice, when in reality it is. Afterwards Joey finally admits the secret to his productivity, and spoiler alert it's not Columbian marching powder, or even his green screen of power. I can't reveal it here, so you'll just have to listen to the episode and find out for yourself. Grind out.

  • Yours For The Asking with Ed Goyette

Joey and Jason return with episode 68 of The Grind. This instalment starts with Joey talking about an experiment with making offers on properties that he is undertaking, and his first experience with detoxing. The guys give a quick recap of last weeks episode and have a short discussion about being open to opportunities. Jason includes his take on haters and naysayers and the guys speak about how best to deal with them.

"I ask everyday for what I want, and I usually get it".

The guest for this week is Ed Goyette, creator of 'Yours for the Asking' and serial entrepreneur. The guys begin the interview asking Ed about the origins of his programme, the philosophy of which dates back to when Ed was twelve years old and a story about little league baseball his father and Joe Torre. It is a positive, mobilising way of looking at the world that Ed has geared towards engaging young people. Joey, Jason and Ed discuss why people generally don't ask for the things that they want, and the fear of rejection that is inherent to that process. Ed then tells a second titular anecdote, this one about his daughter and her very early career decisions, and how the realisations that he gained helped the development of his approach with Yours for the Asking. Jason follows suit with a story about his daughter and his possible failures in helping her pursue an interest in music. Ed explains how it is a pitfall that every parent falls into to some extent, so you shouldn't kick yourself for missed opportunities, but instead pay more attention to future ones.

"if you look at your kids, you will realise that they are a constant stream of possibility".

Joey asks Ed about how he attains the addresses he uses in his programme, and Jason asks him about the dedicated time that he allocates to being with his kids and how he fits it into his schedule. Ed explains that it's all about switching into a child like mindset, in which the world is limitless and there for you to explore. He then brings the discussion to the potentiality of a child psyche and how putting yourself in that place as an adult can be a welcome break from the harsh adult rat race. Joey concurs and expounds on how your numberless dreams as a kid feel like they disappear in the blink of an eye. The guys probe Ed further and he speaks about how the process of putting yourself on a level with your kid helps you treat them like an equal and they in turn become more receptive.

Towards the end of the show the guys talk about how to make the most of the 'lightning years', that period of time before adolescence when your children only see you as a superhero. Joey fawns over Eds ability to reach and gain responses from so many people, until Ed reminds him that he is not as inherently adorable as an eight year old girl. To finish up Ed talks about the journey of realisation when he first figured out that he was having a tangible impact on peoples lives. He also finishes up the chronology of his and his daughter's story, to tie the episode up in a nice little bow.

  • What To Do When You Find Out Your BFF Alcohol Has Betrayed You with Annie Grace

"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect".

Episode 67 of The Grind, and Joey and Jason waste no time getting into the weeks topics. The guys take a moment to discuss how much time you can waste when you have no direction, and they relate this to how much you can benefit from a coach, a mentor or just some direction in your life. Joey and Jason then give this week's guest Annie Grace a healthy introduction, talking about her book and how it affected both of their mindsets.

"I got done with that book, and for some reason I didn't want another drink".

To begin the interview Joey asks Annie how she created such a powerful core message that has seen such success. Annie discusses the subconscious element of her ideas and how people react to confronting information unfamiliar to them. She talks about the fact that a lot of the thought processes that go into drinking are totally unconscious. Something most people don't address, so when they do it can have a transformative affect. Annie and the boys then consider the archetypes and common myths that perpetuate alcoholism in our society, the importance of not overburdening yourself with expectations and they also go in depth on the psychological aspects of addiction.

Annie continuously highlights the benefits of not 'trying to stop drinking' but to instead focus on paying attention to yourself and approaching life in a step by step manner. The machinations of the former mindset is something that takes the gang a bit of time to unpack. For the remainder of the podcast  Joey and Jason pick Annie's brain about the power of alcohol marketing, it's correlation with the tobacco industry, peoples misconceptions about day to day drinking and the glorification of binge culture and it's negative affects on society.

Annie closes out the podcast with some food for thought. She presents some prescient statistics and a mark twain quote that bear extreme relevance to the episode and the zeitgeist around drinking in the modern day.

  • 90 Days to 5k Investing in Real Estate with Edna Keep

Joey and Jason return with another episode of The Grind. The boys start this week deciphering some important babysitter logistics, before recapping last weeks episode and talking about how they have already implemented some of the ideas they discussed.  Jason also considers his own fallibility when it comes to judging other people's life choices, Leading to Joey and Jason wondering if they could run a small shop with little growth and still be happy, instead of living in the fast-moving world of real estate.

"I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth"

The boys introduce this week's guest Edna Keep and ask her to describe how she got into real estate. As it turns out Robert Kiyosaki and his 'Rich dad Poor dad' programme has played a role in Edna, Jason and Joey's introduction to the industry, which they discuss intermittently throughout the episode. Jason then asks Edna to breakdown her targets for income and assets in a long-term context. In lieu of asking Edna just quite how she got to where she is now, Joey puts forward the idea of actively pursuing goals even when you don't know what the first step is. In other words, "the answer to how is yes". The guys discuss this summarily with Edna and then ask her what her initial moves in the industry actually were. Edna drops some anecdotes about her early decisions and explains her ethos and how she decided on it.

"you take what you learn, and you can use it in any market"

Joey starts the next segment speaking about how people often don't take advantage of situations, when the benefit to them isn't so obvious. Edna talks on that point in a more specific context with Jason asking her to clarify various terms for the listeners as they move through topics. Jason describes how he approached his real estate career on his own, and the importance of dealing with failure and fear. Joey builds off the back of that point talking about a something Edna mentioned earlier which she calls 'Analysis paralysis'. For the next ten minutes Joey, Jason and Edna go fairly deep into cash flow philosophy and the best outlook to have in regard to your monthly earnings. A natural Segway occurs, and the topic of coaches comes up. The guys discuss the idea that the main thing a coach can help you do, is get out of your own way, they discuss some of the other benefits and Edna begins to describe her programme '90 days to 5k'. In describing the importance of momentum when starting a real estate endeavour, Edna tells some more insightful stories about her outset in the business.

Towards the end of the show, Joey speaks on broadening your horizons, Edna talks about some of the other organisations she is involved with and the crossovers between Joey, Jason and herself.
