On #TheUpdate this Friday, the New York chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has sued the NYPD, saying that they're illegally keeping the vast majority of officer disciplinary records out of public view. Teachers that are opposed to New York City's vaccine mandate for public school teachers and other staff have filed a petition with the U.S Supreme Court seeking an emergency injunction that would keep it from going into effect. The city has given school employees until 5pm today to get at least their first vaccine shot. And people who died, are healing, and are struggling will be remembered during the fourth anniversary of the Las Vegas massacre that became the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S history. 🇺🇸

On Thursday's edition of #TheUpdate, Macy's has filed a lawsuit against the company that owns the giant billboard next to it's flagship Manhattan store, fighting to prevent Amazon from taking over the advertising space that carried Macy's name for almost 60 years. There had been a restrictive covenant in place since 1963 barring the billboard space from being used by any Macy's competitor. The hit Broadway show Aladdin was cancelled when breakthrough COVID-19 cases were reported within the musical's company, a day after the show reopened, a worrying sign for Broadway. It was the first Broadway COVID-19 cancellation since shows resumed in July. And political adversaries in Congress are united in outrage against Facebook for privately compiling information that Instagram appeared to grievously harm some teens, especially girls, while publicly downplaying the popular platform's negative impact.

On Wednesday's late edition of #TheUpdate, is it really god's will for you to get the vaccine? A lawyer for a group trying to preserve a religious exemption for health care workers says that Governor Hochul is unjustly using God's name to try to nudge employers into ignoring court orders allowing the exemption. She's encouraging religious-minded people to get a vaccine by saying it's God's will. The objections to a historic settlement with Perdue Pharma are mounting in the form of appeals. With Rhode Island's objection, any successful appeal could undo the whole deal, not just that state's piece of it. And the number of first-dose COVID-19 vaccinations is falling in the U.S, despite the spread of vaccine requirements across the country. Some experts worry that the move to dispense booster doses could undermine the efforts to persuade the unvaccinated to get their shots in the first place.

On Tuesday's edition of The Update, R. Kelly is guilty as charged. He now faces the possibility of decades in prison after being convicted of racketeering and sex trafficking. A jury found him guilty after a trial in which several accusers testified he subjected them to perverse and sadistic whims when they were underage.

A judge has now barred NYPD officers from accessing sealed arrest records without a court order. The preliminary injunction issued halts a long-standing practice of plying confidential information to aid investigations, target suspects and shape policing decisions. And Republican senators have blocked a bill to keep the U.S government funded and allow barrowing. But Democrats determined to avoid a federal shutdown say they'll try again this week.

On The Update this Monday, mourners payed their respects to Gabby Petito, whose death on a cross-country trip has sparked a manhunt for her boyfriend. Family members, friends, co-workers and people who didn't know her but we're touched by Petitio's story attending the viewing. New York City schools have been temporarily blocked from enforcing a vaccine mandate for its teachers and other workers by a federal appeals judge days before it was to take effect. The mandate for the nation's largest school system was set to go into effect Monday night. And Democrats are promising historic investments across all levels of education as they push ahead with President Biden's $3.5 trillion rebuilding plan. The proposal includes universal Pre-K, two years of free community college and expanded child care subsidies.

And the CDC has endorsed COVID-19 booster shots for millions of older or otherwise vulnerable Americans. The move opens a major new phase in the U.S vaccination drive against the coronavirus.

On The Update this Thursday, as residents across the northeast continue to recover from the catastrophic flooding from recent storms, they're being hit with another unexpected blow: without flood coverage, their homeowners and renters insurance won't cover their losses, and many wonder how they'll come up with the money to repair homes and replace belongings. A new smartphone app being rolled out this week allows in the NYPD's community policing program to log neighborhood concerns like graffiti, loud music, and public intoxication- and also keep track of whether they've been addressed. And California will be the first state to bar mega-retailers (like Amazon) from firing warehouse workers for missing quotas that interfere with bathroom and rest breaks. It also prohibits disciplining workers for following health and safety laws, and also allows employees to sue to suspend unsafe quotas or reverse retaliation.
