On Long Island, police say that a driver who caused a crash that killed himself and four others in July was driving in excess of 100 mph. The speed limit in the road where the crash happened? 40 mph. And members of the House scrambled back to Washington to pass a short-term limit of the nation's debt limit. The vote will ensure the federal government can continue fully paying it's bills into December.

On #TheUpdate this Friday, a newly released investigation says that Mayor De Blasio misused city resources by taking his security detail with him on trips during his ill-fated presidential run. It recommends that the mayor reimburse the NYPD for the more than $300,000 spent on those trips, including for letting his adult son use his police security detail as a free taxi service.

Pfizer is asking the U.S government to allow use of its COVID-19 vaccine in children ages 5 to 11. If regulators agree, shots could begin within a matter of weeks. And in a new poll, nearly all Americans agree that the rampant spread of misinformation is a problem. Most also think that individual users, along with social media companies, bear a good deal of blame for the situation. But few are very concerned that they themselves might be responsible.

On #TheUpdate this Thursday, Mama's Fried Chicken on 116 St in Harlem is the scene where two teens- ages 13 and 16- were shot, apparently by a 17-year old gunman who was quickly apprehended. The 13-year-old was shot in the head, but is expected to survive, while the 16-year-old was shot in the back. The victims and the gunman are part of rival crews, which are subsets of established gangs, and may be retaliation for another shooting on the same block last week.

Transit officials and experts say that this past summer's storms were the latest reminders that more needs to be done to prepare the East Coast's vital transit systems in the face of more extreme and unpredictable weather caused by climate change. And in Texas, a federal judge has ordered the state to suspend a new law that has banned most abortions in the state since September. Texas officials were expected to seek a swift appeal.

On #TheUpdate this Wednesday, federal agents have raided the offices of Sergeants Benevolent Association president Ed Mullins, who has clashed with city officials over his incendiary tweets and hard-line tactics. The union sent a statement to members that Mullins resigned to avoid hampering the union's operations.

Officials have announced that the New York Public Library and its sister branches will no longer charge late fees and will waive existing fines for overdue books and other materials. And in Los Angeles, leaders are poised to enact one of the nation's strictest vaccine mandates- a sweeping measure that would require the shots for everyone entering a bar, restaurant, nail salon, gym, or even a Lakers game.

You survived. 😭 Facebook and it's Instagram and WhatsApp platforms are back online after a massive global outage plunged the services, and the businesses and people who rely on them, into chaos for hours. Facebook said late Monday that "the root cause of this outage was a faulty configuration change." In Times Square, police say a man was shot in the leg, marking the third shooting this year in an area that's a top destination for Big Apple tourists.

And no, you didn't win the Powerball jackpot. Sorry. 🤷🏽‍♂️ After 40 drawings without a winner, a single ticket sold in California matched all six numbers and was the lucky winner of the nearly $700 million jackpot prize. The winner will be able to choose between the annuity option paid over 29 years, or the cash option of $496 million.

Syracuse University has agreed to pay nearly $4 million to settle a lawsuit brought by five female faculty members who claimed they were paid less than their male counterparts who held equivalent positions. And in California, crews on the water and on the shore are working feverishly to limit environmental damage from one of the largest oil spills in recent history. Huntington Beach mayor Kim Carr says that the city's beaches could remain closed for weeks or even months.
