  • #AfrikanNarrative: Trucking industry at war
We’re talking about the unrests in the trucking industry – zooming in on the fight between SA truck drivers and foreign national truck drivers. Is there a scarcity of skilled SA truck drivers? Is it justified for SA truck drivers to say that their jobs are being taken by foreign truck drivers?

Have there been any confirmed reports about falsified permits and licenses and cheap labour? How true is it that SA truck drivers are not comfortable with doing cross-border travels hence companies now prefer the foreign nationals?

  • ECD sector collapsing due to government inadequacy
The impacts of Covid-19 and the lockdown on the Early Childhood Development (ECD) sector have been more widespread than the schooling system. A survey conducted by Ilifa Labantwana and others found that over 100,000 jobs in the ECD sector may already have been lost and 1.8 million children are at risk of not being able to access early childhood learning services if centres are unable to reopen. Without childcare being available, the burden of care falls primarily on women – impeding their ability to take up income-earning opportunities.
