  • WWI #37: Ryan Hurst of GMB Fitness talks to us getting back to the bare essentials of working out and what it really means to be fit.
So if you've listened to the show over the past few months you know I had a midlife crisis and decided to deadlift 400 pounds by the time I turned 40 in December. It turned out to be a stupid decision because instead of dealifting 400 pounds, I ended up spending hours laying on the floor with a hurt back. In researching rehab programs, I discovered GMB Fitness after seeing a lot of chatter about them on twitter. Their focus is on mindfulness, listening to your body and exploring movements through various work flows. The first paragraph on their website caught my attention the most:
“Lately, the word “fitness” has been perverted to mean shaming yourself into doing things you hate to impress people you don’t like with a body that looks good but is too beat-up and tired to do anything fun.”

Ryan was a cool interview and we had a good discussion on what it means to get fit today and what our motivations are for hitting the gym. We talk about stripping away the equipment and getting back to the bare essentials in our bare feet.

This week, the AMAZING story of wounded Navy veteran Nico Maroulis who literally went from wheelchair to the top of the world. Her personal drive and determination to physically push through injuries is an inspiration to anyone facing hardship. We discuss her experiences riding a hand cycle across the continental US and her trip to Nepal to climb Mt. She is a founding member of Summit IDG, an organization which provides motivation and training to veterans and first responders injured on duty to regain peak performance and reach personal summits of achievement. • WWI #35: Tom Bell; Next time you skip a rock take a closer look first, it could be a priceless 12,000 year old artifact!
Tom Bell is a student archaeologist who volunteered with his girlfriend to work at a site called Star Carr in England. He happened to see a small stone about the size and shape of a guitar pick and on further examination, he uncovered a 12,000 year old piece of art... the oldest of it's kind! Who owned it? What were the people like? We have a good talk about the science of archaeology and wax philosophical about time and what our short lives mean in the vastness of human existence.

  • WWI #34 True Crime, “The Jinx” and “Making a Murderer” with author & former Secret Service Agent John Taylor.

John Taylor is an all around great interview. His knowledge on crime and the criminal justice system is second to none. He has written two books on the subject:

Isolated Incident: Investigating the Death of Nancy Cooper
Umbrella of Suspicion: Investigating the death of JonBenet Ramsey

John returns for his second visit to the show to discuss Netflix's successful true crime series Making a Murderer and HBO's series The Jinx. He also shares his knowledge of DNA evidence and how it may not be as cut and dry as it seems. We had a lot of laughs making this show and it is easily one of my favorite shows of the year! I'm planning on having John again real soon!

  • WWI #33: Author, Martial Artist, Snow Border and Psychonaut Matt Belair joins me to discuss some of his less than ordinary adventures.
Matt is an interesting guy who sees the world through kaleidoscope lenses. He shirked the ordinary to pursue a life of enlightenment and service to his fellow man. He's a life long student of zen meditation and martial arts. He joined me for a discussion about studying Kung Fu with Shaolin Monks in China, meditating with zen masters in Nepal and coming awfully close to his demise while trekking the base camp of Everest. He coaches athletes on visualization and meditation and is the author of Zen Athlete: The Secrets to Achieving Your Highest Potential.

We had a fun discussion and I really enjoyed the show. I hope you do too!

  • WWI #32: Bonus Show: I experimented with some video so I had random question night to gin up some soundbite! Here’s the schizophrenic results!!
Originally this episode was put together on short notice to experiment with adding a video aspect to the show. I got some booze and pulled out some random questions just to see what type of interesting soundbites I could get out of the crew. This was one of the hardest episodes to edit because it was all over the place! I had to perform some editing magic to make it somewhat coherent! All in all, I think it came out good and it made for some interesting conversation. Take a listen! And check out my new videos on YouTube! We're going to be doing a lot more with video coming up... so stay tuned!

  • WWI #30: The Apocalypse Show! Where, when and how wil it happen???
Moses and Savanna come over to discuss their thoughts on how the world may someday end. Will we go out with a whimper or with a bang? Or will we even see it happen in our lifetime? Society is obsessed with the apocalypse for many reasons. First and foremost, it's a great evolutionary fear. We are put on this earth for perpetuation of the species and this means self-preservation at all costs. The apocalypse threatens to take this all away and Hollywood knows this sells tickets to blockbusters.

  • WWI #29 Bonus LIVE (unedited) show! Mike goes to the Dominican Republic & shares his experiences… plus more
Mike came over last night with a nice bottle of whiskey to talk about his recent trip to the Dominican Republic with Rotary International se we went out on the back porch and hit "record". He shares his experiences fixing one room/dirt floor homes in some of the most impoverished areas of the island nation. This of course leads us to discuss the stark differences in ideas of wealth and poverty between the 1st and 3rd worlds. Why do some of the oldest know civilizations in the world look like the setting of an apocalyptic movie? Why is the United States, a relatively new nation in the vast scheme of things, so well established with solid infrastructure and wealth (remember wealth is comparatively different for each society). We also go off on our usual tangents of working out (is crossfit good or bad), whiskey, cigars in the Dominican, the status of Mike's new bar here in Clayton, NC, and we even delve into Genghis Khan!

I hope you enjoyed this off-the-cuff live feel episode... in other words, I didn't feel like editing ; )

  • #28 Mark Garrison, Author of Guts N’ Gunships: What it was Really Like to Fly Combat Helicopters in Vietnam

Mr. Mark Garrison, a Warrant Officer in the US Army during the Vietnam War and author of "Guts N' Gunships: What it was Really Like to Fly Combat Helicopters in Vietnam" shares some of his experiences with us in today's show. Running out of college money during the mid-1960s meant he had little choice but to sign up for the Army before the Army came and got him anyways. He refused to run for the border and wanted to somewhat control his destiny, therefore he volunteered under the promise that he would become a pilot. As the sleeve of his book explains:
"Straight from college, to the US Army, to command pilot of a four ton gunship with a four man crew in Vietnam. From college chess games to a game of life and death. It was surreal to say the least. In this book I pour my heart out and bare my soul to tell you what that was like, from basic to Vietnam and back."
I hope you enjoy this show. It was an honor to have Mr. Garrison as a part of the WWIPodcast experience.
