Jacob is finally leaving Shechem and heading on to Bethel in obedience to God. After ten years he is returning to the LORD. God has commanded Jacob to build an alter once he arrives in Bethel. In Shechem, Jacob built an alter in place of obedience. Now in Bethel, he will build an alter as a result of obedience.

Jacob also offers a drink offering. This is an act of gratitude that leads to worship.  True worship will always come from a grateful heart that holds nothing back.

Have we poured our lives out before God?

The Bible is honest about its hero's. David was without question a great man of God. He was a man after God's own heart. Yet in this study we will see how he failed. His failure was so great that unless God intervened, David would have lost his life.

David's failure was that he stopped fearing the LORD. David shares transparently with us his experience in order that we may learn to fear the LORD.

Do you fear the LORD? There is no downside to the fear of the LORD. The fear of the LORD is wisdom; clean and enduring; tends to life and causes us to depart from evil.

Today we see much of the world inside the church. At times it is impossible to differentiate between the two. Why? Because the fear of the LORD is absent.

Do you fear the LORD? The only fear a child of God should have is the fear of the LORD. The fear of the LORD will deliver us from all other fears.

Jaco is a man that has experienced great spiritual advantage. He has every reason to live as Israel yet has chosen the path of compromise and disobedience. Jacob has selfishly put his whole family in grave danger by choosing this horrific path.

What we see before us is a cruel horrible story. It shows us what we are all capable of when we choose the path of compromise and disobedience.

God lovingly overrules. Jacob has no other option but to move ahead in obedience to Bethel. We can be so thankful for the sovereignty of God knowing always that He who began a good work is faithful to complete it.

Paul now makes a transition. He goes from telling us who we are in Christ and all that we are in Christ, to challenging us to live for Christ. Considering all that God has done for us in Christ, the command to live for Christ is more than reasonable.

We are called to walk worthy in order that we would keep the wonderful unity that we already have in Christ. Paul explains to us what virtues will be needed to keep this unity, and he also explains the seven elements that make up this solid foundation of our glorious unity in Christ.

Paul is not making a suggestion. He is giving a command from God. Based on all that we have already ready, we are fully equipped to fulfill this command. The question before us is not can I live for Christ, but will I live for Christ.

Will we live for Christ to the glory of the Father?

Jacob had an incredible encounter with God. God changed his name to Israel, a man whose life is now ruled by God. Yet as soon as he steps out of this encounter, Israel immediately reverts back to being Jacob.

Jacobs past experience with God is no guarantee of him living faithfully as Israel in the present. We cannot live on past experiences.

The key to living the life of Israel is to live in the fear of God, not man. For us, we must fear God, keep our eyes on Jesus and stay true to His word. In so doing, we will live a God mastered life.

Paul concludes the first half of Ephesians with his second prayer. In the first three chapters Paul described for us the amazing wealth that we have in Christ. He discussed the doctrine of salvation and the church. But before moving on to how all of this should impact the way we live for Jesus; he had to pray.

Paul's prayer is the perfect prayer for all those in Christ. It is perfect for God's church. Paul prays that we would be strengthened by the Holy Spirit. He prays that we would dwell in Christ being rooted in love. And he prays that we would be filled with the fullness of God.

It is a simple, brief, clear prayer offered by Paul for the church. May Paul's prayer be our prayer today for each other and for the whole body of Christ.

Jacob is on his way to meet his brother Esau. Jacob has no idea how this meeting will turn out. It has been twenty years since he deceived his father in order to get the blessing. It was a bitter departure. How will Esau respond to Jacob?

But before Jacob can meet with Esau, he must first meet with God. God has been working in Jacob and preparing him for this moment for twenty years. Jacob will never be the same after he comes face to face with God.

Jacob will soon learn that it is better to limp through life and be ruled by God then to walk through life and never be all that God has called you to be.

Paul has now established what the mystery of the church is. He will now speak to God's purpose for His church. In the church, we see the wisdom of God, filled with beauty, variety and complexity. It is Divine wisdom unlike any wisdom we know.

It is through His Church that God displays His wisdom to all the angels, both good and bad in the heavenly places. This tells us how precious we are to God as His church.

The church is God's idea. Thus, the church must always be according to God's word. God's work must be done God's way. The church is a spiritual entity, made up of all those in Christ, living in obedience to God's word, submitted to the Lordship of Jesus and operating in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Jacob has left Laban for good. This course in the school of faith is now complete. Jacob must now move on to his next course which involves his brother Esau. Jacob will have no peace until he faces his brother. His past unforgiven wrong must be dealt with. Righteousness always comes before peace.

Jacob will come to learn that Esau is not the problem. Jacob himself is the problem. Jacob must have a change of heart in order to face his circumstances by faith.

Paul who is both a prisoner of Christ Jesus and a minister as well, share with us all the great mystery of the church. Now this mystery is not mystical or magical. It is a sacred secret which had not been previously know. God in His grace has revealed it to Paul. This mystery was once concealed in the Old Testament but now is revealed in the New Testament.

This amazing mystery is that both Jew and Gentile have equal standing in Christ. God's grace is the great equalizer. The ground at the foot of the cross is level. All who are in Christ are recipients of God's grace. We have all been washed in the blood of the Lamb.
