On this edition of Movie Swap, Phil and Ben trade their picks for films featuring female lead and director! Their choices couldn’t be any more different from each other.

First there’s Close, a Netflix original action thriller that Noomi Rapace carries from start to finish. Then there’s Lady Bird, a critically acclaimed coming-of-age gem starring Saoirse Ronan. Both explore troubled mother-daughter relationships, but the biggest differences between the films include the casting firepower, quality of the story and the number of explosions that happen.

Phil has WAYWAY this week and he’s talking about Hulu’s Only Murderers in the Building, a mystery show starring Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short. Naturally.

GO GO POWER RANGERS!

It’s time for Phil and Ben to talk about the 2017 Power Rangers reboot movie. And it’s an infinitely interesting puzzle.

The film turned a $6 billion cheesy toy franchise into a dark, dramatic origin story that appeals to anyone, not just weird kids who like Power Rangers (Ben). The guys discuss the fascinating cast, (Billy from Stranger Things, a Latin pop star, Bryan Cranston on a computer screen, and a delirious Elizabeth Banks) and whether the stylistic choices is the movie work. But things take an odd turn when Ben reveals some of the deepest, strangest secrets of the Power Rangers franchise to Phil....

Ben has WAYWA this week, and he’s discussing A Week Away, a Netflix original musical set at a Christian summer camp. Phil is completely on board, at least until Ben decides to share some odd summer camp stories of his own. You’ve been warned.

This means war...

The guys are back with another movie swap, and this time they are trading their favorite war films. Phil dishes out Jojo Rabbit, a satirical dark comedy/drama/tear-jerker on a 10-year-old boy’s experience in Nazi Germany. Ben’s choice is Glory, a forgotten Civil War classic starring younger versions of Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman, plus 100 other people you know from one other movie.

The movies each highlight a different experience of the human spirit fighting against oppression. And spoiler alert, both are amazing. They guys go really deep into not just the spectacular performances and achievements of each movie, but into the themes and creative choices that make each one unique.

Then, on WAYWA, Phil has finally given in and started watching Outer Banks (!) But does he actually like it, or is he just trying to get Ben to stop talking about it every week?

Or at least, Phil and Ben are going to court against each other! They have massively different opinions on LeBron James’ mega-project, Space Jam: A New Legacy. One sees it as a unique, modern take on the legacy of the original film. The other sees only a shameful, over-commercialized cash grab for Warner Bros. So who’s right?

We aren’t leaving it up to us to decide. The guys are joined by honorable impartial judge Mike Chapin who hears both of their arguments, weighs the evidence and issues a verdict. There can only be one champion. Who will it be?

Then, Mike dishes up this week’s WAYWA, sharing the landmark anime series Hunter x Hunter, along with the reality competition show, Lego Masters.

We’re back!
