The seven accused in the 255-million-rand asbestos corruption matter have been released on bail ranging between 50-thousand and 500-thousand-rand in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court. The accused have been ordered to surrender their passports. The state did not oppose bail, but insisted that it be set high given the seriousness of the offences. The Hawks arrested six of the seven suspects on Wednesday during operations in the Free State, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. The seventh suspect handed himself over on Thursday. President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South Africans of different races, colors, and tribes to co-exist peacefully in their diversity. Ramaphosa said this while addressing the Heritage Day Celebrations.Ramaphosa has also called for the protection of indigenous languages and cultures. The event sees four teams take to the Verneukpan in the Northern cape on foot. One team at a time, pulling their provisions on a light frame cart on 'fat-boy' mountain bike tyres, unassisted and unaided, for 200km's - in only four days. Political parties and civil society organisations are calling for South Africans to have a greater say on how the country is run. This call is given more weight by the recent judgement by the Constitutional Court which
declared the Electoral Act to be unconstitutional. The Concourt has found that the legislation strips citizens of the right not to affiliate themselves to a political party. In light of this , leaders who are calling for change such as One South Africa Movement founder Mmusi Maimane, Christian marketplace leader Dr Michael Louis and COPE leader Mosiuo Lekota have launched a new Direct Election Bill. The draft electoral bill aims to serve the interests of every South African, particularly those who remain marginalised, neglected and increasingly alienated from the politics of the day. This is to ensure the direct elections of accountable community leaders to Parliament. Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, says the number of daily coronavirus infections in Tshwane is higher than they've ever been. He says Tshwane and the Sedibeng region, south of Johannesburg, are the new areas of concern. The Premier however says the overall number of infections in the province has significantly declined over the past two weeks, with the daily average now at 300. Makhura was speaking at the opening of the Lenasia South District Hospital in Johannesburg. SABC's Wisani Makhubele reports

The ANC says it will pay government for the costs of using a SANDF plane to travel to Zimbabwe. This has been welcomed by political parties and civil society groups, but the Freedom Front Plus says it wants more details about the cost of the flight, who paid for accomodation and venues before they are satisfied by the decison to pay back the money. The delegation led by ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule met with Zanu-PF leaders in Harare over that country's political and economic situation.
