Kirsten Ismene Schilling: Bio for Arabesque Aromas and Arabesque Press
An artist, author, and art historian, I received my BA in art history from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, with honors, in 1996. I began researching plant folklore, medieval herbals, and Renaissance-era aromatics in 1999 with a burning desire to smell history. Upon recreating my very first aromatic recipe from 1560, with the authentic botanical ingredients, I fell in love, and have been creating a range of handmade aromatics from pure botanical sources ever since.
Over the past twenty years my curiosity and passion for my craft has led me to study herbology, spagyrics, perfumery, essential oils, and distillation techniques. I managed a wholesale essential oil company in the Hollywood Hills for seven years to learn about essential oils. And I worked as a botanical volunteer at the Huntington Museum and Botanical Gardens in Pasadena for three years, where I practiced the Latin names for plants as I weeded and watered the aromatic herb gardens.
A 2010 graduate of the Antioch University, Los Angeles graduate program “The Art of Publishing,” I also write both nonfiction and creative/literary nonfiction, mainly under my own private publishing imprint - Arabesque Press.
My cookbook “The Fragrant Kitchen Cookbook: Culinary Recipes from a Botanical Perfumer” is an Arabesque Press exclusive. It was first published in 2014, and then rereleased by the Arabesque Press imprint in 2018. More information on this sensory cookbook is available in the YouTube video, below. The hard copy is currently out of print, due to the pandemic, but an updated 2021 PDF is available for purchase.
Currently, I’m working on my master’s degree in library science with an emphasis on Archives and Special Collections, while surreptitiously enjoying the perfume of old books and magical manuscripts.
