  • Detox for a flash free menopause

What does detoxification have to do with menopause? Turns out quite a bit. Today I want to connect the dots between toxicity in our environment, our diet and our nervous system and how that can show up in menopause symptoms and what we can do to buffer ourselves in that transition.

Why do some women sail through menopause without a single hot flash and others feel like the wicked witch of the west melting into a puddle? Why do so many women, even fit and active women suddenly feel their pelvic floor dropping out from under them?

There’s a rumor that European women or women outside of the US for example don't really experience PMS symptoms and menopause symptoms the way we do here in the US. I don’t think that’s actually. The statistics on menopause symptoms experienced by women in other countries don’t really support that rumor. What is true is that symptoms between individual women anywhere vary wildly.  And this might be the string we need to pull on to unravel some of the mysteries around this transition. And while we’re at it, find the leverage to shape a healthier menopause transition.

  • Subtle body energy and the power in menopause

Menopause is the pinnacle transition for women. Society looks at this time as “the end” and it holds negative, self destructive images. Images of the dried up, wrinkled old women with nothing left to give. The cultural, and medical messaging is focused on how to “fix” it, mask it or prescribe it away. But menopause and the changes that come with it isn’t a disease. It doesn’t need to be fixed. You can’t fix aging. Everyone does it every single day. This is a natural transition. But maybe we need to look at it with a different understanding of how our body naturally works.  Peeling back the subtle layers, if you will. Today I’d like to explore the subtle body and its relation to menopause and how we feel in our own skin throughout this transition.

  • Wake up to better sleep in perimenopause and menopause

If there’s one thing that every woman I know complains about, it's sleep deprivation. There’s a reason they use it for torture, oops I mean enhanced interrigation. Sleep disturbance every once in a while, a night or 2 here and there, is not a problem. More than 3 nights a week might be. Now I thought it was just me but apparently waking between 2 and 4 AM every night like clock work is pretty common for women in perimenopause and menopause. So today we’re going to take a look at why that happens and what you do about it.

Sleep is affected by almost everything you do from the moment you wake up in the morning. Today we’re going to focus on 3 specific pieces to the sleep puzzle and what you can do to naturally influence those things.

Specifically we want to look at 3 sleep levers. Stress, hormones and blood sugar.

  • Mystery muscle: The door to the pelvic floor

If ever there was a riddle wrapped in an enigma shrouded in mystery in the body it’s the pelvic floor. Both men and women have pelvic floor muscles and both experience dysfunction but for today we’re just talking to the ladies. If you are listening to this where little ones are present we are going to talk about s-e-x and things of that nature so if you aren’t ready to do that explaining you might want to put the earbuds in. Fair warning.

Anatomically, the pelvic floor is a web of muscles woven through and around the most intimate vulnerable parts of the body. At best it’s misunderstood at worst it’s tangled up in a mess of sexual shame and trauma history. Especially for women. Today we’re going to demystify the pelvic floor and open the door for women to reclaim a sense of trust and reverence for this part of themselves.

  • How to eat for resilience and mental health

What can I eat that will lower stress? I got this question once in a nutrition presentation. My answer at the time was “nothing legal” But what this person really wanted was what we all want when we’re uncomfortable in our own skin. A quick fix. Lower stress really just means better resilience from the inside out.

The truth is double edged. No, there's not one thing you can eat to lower stress. But yes there are lots of things. AND how you eat matters. Today we’ll look at how appetite and hunger are connected to the nervous system and stress response. And some ways you can eat that will calm you from the inside out.

  • Let resistance be your guide

If you carry a certification you are required to maintain CEC. It takes some creativity to curate those into career excellence.

So How DO you get better at what you do in an industry where everyone is basically doing and offering the same things?

In my humble opinion what sets instructors apart lies outside traditional continuing education. Outside the letters after your name and the certifications on your wall. And in order to find it you need to think outside the health + fitness education box.

The way I find it is by taking a hard look at where I am resisting change.

  • 3 Soft skills for hardcore coaching success in and out of the gym

The fitness industry is set up like a snake eating its tail. It gives certification and requires cecs to keep that certification and then offers limited sources of those approved credits.  New trainers and educators in the wellness space are conditioned to believe that if it doesn’t give us some external validation through approved CEC’s or the magic of letters after your name then it’s not worth the time to study. So we look for more and more of what to teach clients instead of developing the skills to better communicate what we know.
I’m not saying certification isn’t important. In the beginning it is. But after that you should shift your focus from what to teach to how you teach it. Those letters after your name might get you in the door but they don’t get you more or better clients. They don’t get your clients better results. They won’t get you better results either.

What does, are things we call soft skills. 3 in particular for coaches but could be applied to pretty much anyone who works with people. These are areas that I have personally felt were missing in my own years of training and collecting CEC’s.

  • Coaching cult of mediocrity

Today I’m talking about coaching. When I say coach I’m talking about anyone who educates others about anything. From preschool to post doc, little league to pro athlete, boutique studios to big box gyms, school counselors to corporate consultants. Coaching of any kind is a business of change making and you can make it big or you can make it small and everything in between. But without courage, creativity and collaboration you can get lost in that cult of mediocrity filled with all the weight loss gurus, self love sisters and money making motivators out there.

Now before you clutch your pearls and get your panties in a twist, I’m not saying that any of those categories of coaching lack value. What I am saying is that they only scratch the surface when it comes to what’s possible, when it comes to real life changing influence because most of them aren’t saying anything new. That is what keeps those folks small. In the same way that social media has become a void of real thought in its pursuit of thought leadership, coaching space is also becoming a void, filled with mediocre messaging about physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and wellbeing.A literal land of mimics and mimes acting out the status quo of preapproved ideas in a space that should be exploding with creative individuality if for no other reason than all human beings are unique and we claim to be here to help other human beings.

  • A different look at supplements

10 areas to focus for optimal health
I love nutrition science. I’ve always been fascinated by the mechanism behind how the body creates and uses energy and the complex connections between all of the systems in the body and how food influences them. Ideally we would all get everything our body needs to function optimally from real, whole food. Theoretically if we did that then we wouldn’t need to count calories. Or even watch portion sizes because the body has built in on and off switches for our appetite and is brilliantly designed to find the perfect energy balance. Sadly I think we can all agree that the standard american diet is deficient on many levels.

Our modern life of convenient hyper palatable food consumption has disrupted that delicate balance and led to food addiction, gut dysfunction and metabolic disease. Today, the lack of nutrition awareness and just basic general activity in modern life and you see most people deficient in many micro nutrients, using food as therapy on some level and desperate for a quick fix to fill in the gaps. That’s where supplements come in.
