There’s only one skill you need to master if you’re going to succeed in the fitness industry (or any industry really) and it has nothing to do with sets and reps, macros and calorie balance, alignment or movement modifications. You can be an expert in all those things but it means nothing if you can’t safely self regulate your nervous system. Wellness work is based on relationships. Physical, mental and emotional dysregulation is the fastest way to kill personal and professional relationships and guarantees burnout.

One of the things I always hated about all the diets I’ve done, and I’ve done quite a few, is how much I had to think about food. It was constant. Especially when I was doing paleo and Keto because it’s sometimes difficult to find things that fit into those categories. And what I know now is that not all diets are for everybody. Especially women in different phases of life. That’s what I want to share with you today. How to be a healthy cheater.

Any kind of boundary begins with a decision. Decide who you want to be in any given situation and then decide what you need to do or not do to support yourself in that space. Your choices should literally back you up. Strong + healthy boundaries are rooted in your core values, can be both non-negotiable and changeable, and still give you flexibility to connect and move in and out of relationships. They allow you to trust yourself and grow. You don’t want to build walls so high you can’t see opportunities, that you can’t make connections and learn from other people but you don’t want to let yourself be the doormat either.

There are a lot of different recommendations out there about the BEST ways to change a habit especially when it comes to changing diet. Without getting into food dogma, that’s the topic of today's work IN.
When I started this podcast I was surprised at how many health and fitness pros had struggled with disordered eating and full blown diagnosed eating disorders. Maybe I shouldn’t have been because of my own history and twisted relationship with food. But Isn’t it interesting to note how many of us in wellness come to it through some kind of struggle with food and body image?
That is the crux of this diet culture - our relationship with food.

This year is all about being more intentional on the work IN when it comes to health and that includes making conscious decisions around how and what we eat. If you’re a fit pro or in wellness at all you’ve probably gotten a lot of questions about what to eat from clients. And it’s difficult to answer those questions and stay within your scope. For myself and many of my colleagues it’s even harder when you also struggle with disordered eating. But I think that’s a beautiful thing about the fitness industry when you can share your own experience (which is always within your scope) and bring your people the latest nutrition information so they can make intentional informed choices for themselves. My guest today is author and health advocate Lynne Bowman.
Lynne is living proof that you can cook, eat, sleep, laugh, and walk your way out of type 2 diabetes, along with other chronic ailments, and her latest book, “Brownies for Breakfast, A Cookbook for Diabetics and the People Who Love Them," is a cool, fun, beautiful, guidebook for anybody who wants to reverse chronic disease, and eat healthy: vegan, vegetarian, plant-based, pescatarian, gluten-free, sugar-free. Plus, because she's a grandma, expect all kinds of advice along with the recipes from her lifetime of experiences.
How wellness has changed.
The impact of chronic disease and family history on lifestyle.
How to take back your own health outcomes.
The connection of food and health.
How to use real food as medicine.
The loss of societal support for good food and healthy eating.
Food, family, feminism. fasting, autophagy and so much more.
So let’s get started on our Work IN.

Fitness. It’s a great career for many reasons. One of them is the low cost of entry. Most fitness certifications are fairly inexpensive compared to a 4 year degree. But all of them require some kind of continuing education to maintain. If you’ve been in the industry for any length of time you’ll find that a lot of what’s offered for cec’s while excellent information may not align with the kinds of things your clients need. And the reality is they can be very expensive so you want to invest wisely in education that’s going to add value for you and your career. Today, I want to talk about the value you can add to how you teach by seeking out non-traditional sources of continuing education.

Nate Sleger is a speaker, author, and fitness industry expert who had his start as a personal trainer and nutrition coach. He’s the host of the Begin Within Podcast, where he interviews experts to uncover the behind-the-scenes of fitness motivation and lasting results. Nate is also the founder and operator of Begin Within Fitness, a 100% online personal training and nutrition coaching studio, designed to remove the barriers to fitness and make it EASY.
Today we’re going to talk about how to lift the pressure of prescriptive fitness and how trauma-informed principles overlap when it comes to maintaining long term health habits. Part of being a trauma informed fit pro is understanding that we are really teaching our clients to be trauma informed for themselves. Helping them build their awareness So THEY can get the results they want for themselves. After all They are the ones who have to do the work. That can’t happen if we overwhelm them right out of the gate. And it really can’t happen if we ourselves don’t have an integrated self regulation practice to share.
So let’s get right to our Work IN today with Nate Sleger.
