Humans are complicated animals. We don’t always react the way the those effects come through our nervous system and the stress response whether we know it or not. With our permission or not. From our present environment or from any point in our past. We know now that the nervous system acts like a superior security system designed to take all of your experiences and prevent you from dying.
Most fit pros along with their clients are living in a state of hypervigilance everyday. And that state changes how the body responds at a cellular level. Excessive amounts of stress can cause physical changes in digestion, immune response, reproduction, hormones, sleep… pretty much every system in the body.
Exercise and diet is another kind of stress. So the challenge for fit pros and coaches is to structure workouts, create classes etc. that are hard enough to trigger an adaptation without setting off another internal alarm. That sweet spot is what we call an edge. We have lots of them. We can talk about physical edge, emotional edge, mental edge but what we mean is that line that takes you to the point between can and can’t. Where you’re not sure if you can do this thing. The job of a trauma informed coach is to help students learn how to approach their edge in a way that feels safe and effective. This sweet spot is where change happens and where resilience gets built. This is why an integrated trauma informed approach with clients can be so helpful.

Today is another episode of real world resilience.Something I think we need more than anything else because the truth is that there’s no way to completely avoid trauma no matter what your life experience or background. Sometimes the story we expect isn’t always the story we find. So the question if we want more real world, real life, resilience is what sets us apart when it comes to how we handle stress injuries and trauma. How do we tap into our own personal post traumatic growth and create a meaningful impact for others.
Some of the topics we’ll touch on may be difficult to hear today and so this is your opportunity to set your boundaries.
Eric is a former Army Captain and today he is the founder of Mentor Access where his mission is to open up access to professional stories that might one day inspire children, students, and other job seekers who might otherwise settle for a career path because they weren’t privileged enough to know about available opportunities.
That is how we met. I had the honor of being a guest on Mentor Access to share my career as a health coach, instructor and entrepreneur in the fitness industry. And in the course of our discussion both on and off the air, I realized that here again was someone with a real life resilience story to tell. And because I truly believe that when you are called to share something with the world it’s because someone out there needs to hear it I knew I needed to invite Eric on to the Work IN to share his experience of service in the army, his transition back to civilian life, how he discovered his own ptsd and his ongoing recovery, the skills and tools that work for him today.

Within the KGI program I teach co-regulation as a full format communication skill that’s rooted in your own self regulation and awareness, defined by your personal and professional boundaries and directed by curiosity and discernment. These things are accessible to all of us with practice.
Co-regulation on its own is simply how our nervous system influences and is influenced by others.
This is a very important understanding for fitness professionals because the success in the fitness industry depends on your ability to connect with people, to build trust and rapport. Ultimately all wellness businesses are businesses or relationships. And of course all relationships are built on communication, relationships of any kind but especially in terms of trauma informed work.
Cultivating skills around how we communicate, how we read other people, is one way we can expand our professional credibility and elevate our authority across any format. You may have heard the saying “no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” This is exactly what our goal is when we are trying to hold space and offer safe co-regulation.

Welcome back to the work in everyone. I'm your host Ericka Thomas and today my guest is Greg Wieting. He helps leaders and entrepreneurs heal anxiety, depression, chronic pain and trauma so they can lead with bold and courageous hearts. For the past two decades, he's helped hundreds of clients reduce or eliminate their dependence on antidepressants, anxiety, pain and sleep meds. He addresses the unique causative factors at play beneath pain, namely the unresolved trauma that causes inflammation compromises immune function, stagnates emotion fogs thought and creates hormonal imbalance, all of the things that we talked about here on the work in He's the founder of Prisma, a framework that overlays trauma, neuroscience, and energy medicine was somatic and mindfulness based practices and develop this while healing his own anxiety, depression and chronic pain rooted in trauma. So he has his own personal story, and I'm really excited to talk to him today.

If we want to provide the absolute best results for our clients we need to at least be aware of that nervous system connection even if it’s for no other reason than to do no further harm. While it’s outside our scope to promise trauma resolution in any of our fitness classes, ideally we can use that knowledge to customize and create trauma informed classes and workouts that build resilience and get results rather than becoming yet another contributing cause of chronic stress and tension. I believe this is possible to do across any format.
Our Work IN today begins at the center.
My kinetic Grace Integration program is designed around a compass rose with each of the cardinal points representing an aspect of trauma informed instruction and class design. But The most important cardinal point in the program is the center point.
The center point represents you and where you are physically, mentally, emotionally, energetically, spiritually, personally, professionally. You stand at the center. You as an instructor and coach need to begin this process of becoming trauma informed by first understanding the powerful influence you hold at the front of the room. That influence is why it’s so important for you to first understand what’s going on with your own NS.

But ultimately no matter what or how you are moving it all comes back to the why. The intention behind your movement is important. But that’s not exactly what I want to talk about today.
During our conversation last week, Yogi Aron called me a unicorn. I think because I shared that for me, yoga has never been about flexibility. And I’m always careful when I teach to direct awareness to the muscle connection in poses, to give permission and freedom for students to feel whatever it is they feel. Maybe it’s because I always used yoga as a crosstrain or maybe because I came to it from the fitness side, but I want my students to understand some of what the body is naturally designed to do. To understand how to work with it rather than fighting to put it into shapes that are more performative than practical.
To me these are not unicorn traits. At least in my experience...

I’d like to introduce you to the concept of flex and flow. Those of you in the fitness industry may be familiar with it on a physical level or if you’ve ever taken a movement or yoga class with that title might be sort of familiar with it. A Flex and flow type of class is when you hold certain poses or isometric for a certain amount of time and then you flow through the range of motion perhaps into the next position. It works great in yoga, pilates or core classes but other formats as well. Today we’re going to apply the same concept to setting, keeping and succeeding with intentional goals.
