Extensive studies of Australia's southern coastlines have discovered one of the most diverse sites for fossilised footprints from hundreds of thousands of years ago. Researchers have uncovered the trace fossils of more than 300 mammals, birds and reptiles on Kangaroo Island off South Australia. The find has given scientists a clearer picture of just how widespread some of Australia's ancient or extinct creatures were, including the Tasmanian tiger.

  • Yemen crisis grows: cholera cases surge, media access blocked
International concern is growing about a humanitarian crisis in Yemen, as the country teeters on the edge of a famine, made worse by a cholera outbreak. Yemen, which is on the southern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, has been engulfed in civil war since September 2014, when Houthi Shiite rebels swept into the capital and overthrew the government. Last week the UN officials said Yemen's suspected cholera caseload has surged past 313,000 and caused over 1,700 deaths, making it the world's largest outbreak.

  • Yemen in 'catastrophic state' as famine and cholera grip the Arab nation
The ongoing civil war in Yemen has caused an outbreak of cholera that has so far claimed 1,800 lives. There are around 360,000 cases of the disease, which has resulted from failing water infrastructure and health services, compounded by a population on the brink of famine. Nigel Timmins, Oxfam's humanitarian director, estimates that around 7 million Yemeni people are suffering from severe hunger across the country, with around 17 million people requiring some form of assistance.

  • Shutdown of world's largest dark web marketplaces will only displace illicit trade, analysts say
Analysts say the shutdown of the world's largest dark web marketplace isn't that much of a blow to the global online trade in illicit goods. A joint US-European police operation has resulted in the closure of two major sites on the so-called dark web. But the enormous global market for drugs, fake IDs, illegal firearms, and child pornography is continuing to expand. But cybersecurity experts are pointing out the dark web has its good side too.

Cryptocurrencies like Ethereum are vital in the operation of dark net markets. They're completely anonymous, meaning that the purchase of illegal goods can be untraceable. But the currency is also completely unregulated, decentralised and vulnerable to hackers. And that's recently cost users about $30 million.

  • Bishop and Morrison rebuke Abbott over 'unhelpful interjections'
Senior members of the Prime Minister's frontbench are publicly rebuking his predecessor, Tony Abbott, over what they say are unhelpful interjections. This week Mr Abbott cast doubt on Malcolm Turnbull's decision to set up a Home Affairs super ministry, saying he was told it wasn't necessary. This weekend the New South Wales branch of the Liberal Party will be asked to vote on an internal issue over which Mr Abbott and Mr Turnbull are at odds.
