  • Labor to oppose Government's proposed citizenship changes
Labor has decided to vote against the proposed changes to citizenship, saying the Government has engaged in massive overreach. It says the English language requirements will make it impossible for many permanent residents to ever qualify for citizenship. The Government says the changes are necessary, and it's trying to make the issue a question of leadership for the Opposition leader Bill Shorten.

  • Bush groups call on ACCC to expand its broadband speed monitoring program
People in remote parts of Australia are feeling left out, after the consumer watchdog announced a broadband speed monitoring program. The trouble for customers in many rural and regional areas is the program won't cover the NBN's satellite and wireless links. Large sections of the country have been told their national broadband network connections will come to their homes and businesses not via a cable but over the air instead. The National Farmers Federation and a coalition of bush groups say they've been hearing a litany of complaints about the service being provided and they've called on the ACCC to broaden its inquiry.

  • Are the payphone's days numbered?
The humble pay-phone could be a thing of the past, if the Productivity Commission gets its way. Payphones cost $44 million annually to run, and Telstra has a universal service obligation to provide payphone services to all Australians. But the commission has recommended cutting funding to payphones because they can no longer be justified in an age of smartphones.

The mother of the man suspected of running down a crowd of pedestrians gathered outside a north London mosque yesterday says she has nothing to say in her son's defence. One person is dead and nine others are being treated for injuries in the wake of the fourth act of terrorism in Britain in three months. As the London Mayor Sadiq Khan vows to bolster security around mosques, British Muslims say they feel increasingly threatened and unsafe.

  • NASA: 219 new potential planets, 10 'Earth-like'
NASA has discovered 219 more planets, and 10 of them are thought to be about the same size and temperature as Earth. In total, the Kepler mission has found more than 2,300 planets in recent years. Astronomers say it's worth remembering that little is known about the planets sometimes referred to as 'Earth-like'.

  • Contraceptive pill could alter female athletic performance
Australian research is exploring whether the conceptive pill could be undermining female athletes' competitiveness. The pill is known to increase the body's core temperature and researchers are looking at how that can be best managed, especially for competitors training in the lead-up to the 2020 Olympics being held during Tokyo's summer.

  • Concerns DNA testing could lead to exclusion by insurance companies
Ever wondered if those beers over the weekend, or this morning's egg and bacon roll will come back and bite you later? Australian patients now have access to DNA testing to determine whether their genetics and lifestyle will leave them vulnerable to diseases and other medical conditions. But consumer advocates are worried the data will be used by insurance companies to deny people life insurance on the basis of having a pre-existing condition.

  • Survey reveals management not doing enough to retain disgruntled staff
It's been revealed that the number one reason employees voluntarily leave their job, is to go to a similar role at another organisation. The hope is that they will find higher pay, more opportunities, and better management. And despite this apparent drop in employee loyalty, the independent study has shown very little is being done by management to retain employees.
