    There are now serious questions about how a known criminal in south-east Queensland managed to get hold of powerful weapons and kill a police officer. The gunman Rick Maddison also died yesterday, just west of Brisbane, after a siege and shootout with police. It's still unclear how Maddison got his high-powered firearms, but experts say it shows a lack of vigilance and understanding around criminals' access to weapons.

  • Greens threaten Qld inner-city Labor seat over Adani royalties deal
    The Queensland Government and Indian company Adani have reached a royalties deal over the company's proposal to build Australia's biggest coal mine. News Limited is reporting Adani would pay a flat rate of $5 million a year for five years, with interest to be paid on any deferred royalties. Adani has thanked the Government, saying it will consider the final investment decision at its next board meeting. The deal has angered the Greens, who have threatened to target the Deputy Premier's inner-city Labor seat.

  • 75th anniversary of Imperial Japan's deadly attack in Sydney Harbour
    It's 75 years since Sydney came under attack in World War Two. Three Japanese midget submarines entered the harbor, hoping to sink an American heavy cruiser which was in port. A torpedo sunk a ferry instead, killing 19 Australians and two British sailors. It was the first and only time Sydney has come under foreign attack.

    A tennis player who forced himself on a journalist during a live TV interview has been banished from the French Open. Tournament organisers called Maxime Hamou's behaviour towards reporter Maly Thomas 'reprehensible'. They have revoked his accreditation and ordered an investigation into the incident. It's not the first time a sports reporter has been on the receiving end of unwanted attention from an athlete.

    French President Emmanuel Macron has held his first meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, at the palace of Versailles near Paris. Mr Macron told Mr Putin they must work towards stronger cooperation in Syria to combat terrorism. The French leader said any use of chemical weapons in Syria would be a red line that would invite immediate French reprisals.
