  • Government looks to exploit Labor division over Medicare levy
Post-budget political manoeuvring has begun with the return of Parliament today. • Nine people injured in Good Friday shooting at Manus Island
The Immigration Department now says many shots were fired into the Manus Island centre on Good Friday, and nine people were injured. The Department initially said only one weapon was used, and it was fired into the air, resulting in no injuries. Energy program director Tony Wood says uncoordinated and rushed 'kneejerk' reactions by politicians could make the situation worse. Tony Wood speaks with the ABC's Peter Ryan.

The independent panel advising the Government on threats to the Great Barrier Reef says it will recommend that the Government make radical changes to its Reef Plan in response to the unprecedented coral bleaching events of the last two summers. The Federal and Queensland Governments' Reef 2050 Plan was drawn up to address a warning from the United Nations that the reef's world heritage status was 'in danger'. That plan focused on sediment damage and farming practices but the panel is now calling for the plan to focus on climate change and for the Australian government to push for an international agreement that limits global warming to 1.5 degrees.

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine is urging the State Government to introduce an illegal drug early warning system to help save lives. • PNG election campaign subdued due to lack of money
Tough economic times are affecting Papua New Guinea's normally colourful election campaign.
