  • Code of Silence: campaigner Jacinta Nampijinpa Price urged to keep quiet about Aboriginal family violence
An Indigenous campaigner against family violence claims she's been pressured to keep quite about the alarming levels of violence in Aboriginal communities. Two weeks ago, Jacinta Price captured the country's attention with her address at the National Press Club, along with academic Professor Marcia Langton and Josephine Cashman from the Prime Minister's Indigenous Advisory Council. Now Ms Price has revealed she's been labelled an oxygen thief and has been put on notice by Aboriginal men in her home town of Alice Springs for speaking out.

  • French President Hollande announces intention not to seek re-election
The French President Francois Hollande has made the surprise announcement he won't seek a second term, making him the first modern French head of state not to attempt to be re-elected. It might be because the 62-year-old is the country's least popular leader since World War II, and his departure would clear the way for an alternative left-wing candidate.

  • Italian referendum vote will be close, expert predicts
Italians go to the polls this weekend to answer a referendum question which could end up bringing down the Prime Minister, further destabilising the country and Europe. Voters are being asked to approve reforms to the constitution and the Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has threatened to resign if they fail to get through. After Brexit and Trump, observers say anything could happen. Lorenzo Codogno is a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and a former chief economist of the Italian Treasury.

  • Turnbull Govt win, with passage of ABCC bill
After three years of hard fought and bitter political debate, the Federal Government is now clear to reinstate the Australian Building and Construction Commission, abolished by Labor when it was in office. Legislation to restore the construction industry watchdog has passed through the Senate this morning. Labor says the legislation is now very different to what was originally proposed. It's attached the South Austalian Senator Nick Xenophon for supporting it without safeguarding the environmental future of the Murray River.

  • Senate again amendments backpacker tax to 10.5 per cent
The Government has unexpectedly lost support in the Senate for its 15 per cent tax rate for working holiday makers, creating another standoff in Parliament. Labor gathered enough support on the crossbench to again amend the proposed tax rate to 10.5 per cent, but the Government says it won't accept that in the Lower House and will send it back to the Senate. The National Farmers Federation describes the stalemate as an 'insanity' and says it can't believe it is continuing.

  • Government to review taxes from oil and gas companies
The amount of revenue the Government receives from the Petroleum Resources Rent Tax has halved in recent years to $800 million and the Treasurer wants to find out why. Scott Morrison has announced a review into the tax which is paid by petroleum companies when they make large profits. But the industry says the reason for the decline has nothing to do with the design of the tax, rather it's because the global oil price has collapsed.
