  • Toddler's tragic death sparks debate over meningococcal vaccine
Debate has flared over whether there should be a public subsidy for the expensive meningococcal B vaccine, following the death of a South Australian toddler. The UK made the vaccine free as part of its routine childhood immunisation schedule last year, but in Australia it costs up to $700 for a course. The federal Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee has on three occasions rejected the manufacturer's application to put the vaccine on the PBS. The World Today has spoken to a former committee member who says the decision was made because it's not cost effective.

  • Coroner finds Phillip Hughes' death unavoidable but questions of sledging remain unanswered
The New South Wales Coroner has described 'sledging' as the 'ugly underside' of a beautiful game, while handing down his findings from the inquest into the death of cricketer Phillip Hughes. The inquest heard Hughes was targeted by short-pitched bowling and alleged sledging during his innings, but Coroner Michael Barnes found it didn't contribute to the 25-year-old's death.

Leave campaigners are angry that the case even went to court. Richard Tice, chairman of 'Leave Means Leave', says the group that brought the case are a group of rich, urban elites playing games with the will of the people.

  • Parliament considers future of voting in digital age
The Australian Electoral Commission has revealed it lost 118 votes from July's federal election that were sent via post from an overseas polling place in Chile. The ballots were eventually recovered, but were found too late to be included in the election count. While the AEC says these votes didn't impact the result, it raises questions about using paper and pen in a digital age.
