  • Govt launches inquiry into 'national tragedy' of Indigenous imprisonment rates
The Federal Government has announced an inquiry into the nation's staggering rates of Indigenous imprisonment. More than one in four prisoners in Australia is Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The Australian Law Reform Commission will examine factors leading to the high incarceration rates and possible improvements to the justice system. Indigenous groups have welcomed the renewed focus, saying the situation is at crisis point. Labor says solutions are already available and another inquiry is not needed.

More than 150 women are said to have been killed at the hands of their partners in Indonesia so far this year, other the government does not actually make an official record. The statistics available show that last year 317,000 women were subjected to violence from a male known to them. But in an archipelago of 250 million people the figures are often unhelpful.

The Federal Government's announced $2.5 million of the $190 million in National Health and Medical Research Council health grants given out today will go towards the establishment of a Centre for Research Excellence in Indigenous Health at Sydney University.
